A hot knot of toads: Aggregation provides thermal benefits to metamorphic Andean toads
We tested the thermal benefits of aggregation ("knotting") for a high-elevation (>4300 m) population of metamorphic Rhinella spinulosa. Fewer knots were recorded when the sun was low on the horizon and aggregating toads dispersed under cloudy skies or when experimentally shaded. Body temperatures of sun-exposed toads averaged 2.3 °C higher when in knots than when solitary. Proximity to water and similarity in body size between aggregating and solitary toads suggest that grouping is not imposed by a need for reducing evaporative water loss. Aggregation apparently provides thermal benefits, which should translate into faster growth.Fil: Espinoza, Robert E.. California State University; Estados UnidosFil: Quinteros, Andres Sebastian.
Fil: Romano, Andres Sebastian. Taxonomy of the Liolaemus alticolor–bibronii Group (Iguania: Liolaemidae), with Descriptions of Two New Species
Liolaemus alticolor is redescribed herein, providing new character states that distinguish this taxon from all other members of the alticolor–bibronii group. Two new species of the alticolor–bibronii group are also described. One of the new species occurs in northern Argentina, in the Jujuy Province, whereas the other occurs in southern Argentina, in the Neuquén Province (northern Patagonia). Both of them exhibit characters that distinguish them from each other and from all other members of the alticolor–bibronii group. A key to the species of this group is provided. Fil: Quinteros, Andres Sebastian. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Between space and time: Naturalist taphonomic observations of lesser rhea (Rhea pennata pennata) remains in southern patagonia and its archaeological implications
The results of taphonomic observations of modern bones of lesser rhea, a large flightless bird, endemic to South America, are presented. The aim was to know the sequence of disarticulation and destruction of bone elements of this species, as a means to interpret and understand the anatomical frequencies in zooarcheological assemblages. The results obtained in a wide spatial or landscape scale are combined with those of longitudinal or long-term observations of naturally deposited lesser rhea carcasses. These bird remains are scarce in the archaeological deposits of the region, while exhibiting an anatomical representation in which the elements of the hindlimbs predominate. Actualistic observations showed a similar representation in modern natural assemblages, in which the joints that last longer include the pelvis/sacrum-hindlimbs, and hindlimbs elements from each other. The latter are the last to be destroyed. That is to say that two different processes, natural recycling and the human action of selective transport, can result in the same representation pattern of skeletal parts of Rhea pennata pennata, which poses a problem of equifinality that is difficult to solve.Fil: Cruz, Isabel. A new species of liolaemus (Iguania: Liolaemidae) of the alticolor group from La Paz, Bolivia
We describe a new species of Liolaemus, belonging to the alticolor group, that was previously confused with L. walkeri. The new species inhabits the inter-Andean dry valleys at two localities in the department of La Paz (Ananta and Jupapina), Bolivia. We compared the new species with 11 morphologically similar taxa classified as part of the alticolor group. Our comparisons were based on external morphology and included lepidosis, morphometry, meristic characters, and color patterns. Liolaemus sp. nov. differs from other species of the same group by unique dorsal coloration and lepidosis characteristics. © 2012 by The Herpetologists League, Inc.Fil: Ocampo Ballivian, Mauricio. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
