Reduced basis approximation of parametrized optimal flow control problems for the Stokes equations
No full textThis paper extends the reduced basis method for the solution of parametrized optimal control problems presented in Negri et al. (2013) to the case of noncoercive (elliptic) equations, such as the Stokes equations. We discuss both the theoretical properties with particular emphasis on the stability of the resulting double nested saddle-point problems and on aggregated error estimates - and the computational aspects of the method. Then, we apply it to solve a benchmark vorticity minimization problem for a parametrized bluff body immersed in a two or a three-dimensional flow through boundary control, demonstrating the effectivity of the methodology. Realizzazione Rigenerazione Urbana Sperimentale di "Grisù -'Ex caserma dei VVF di Ferrara"
No full textLa realizzazione sperimentale dello Spazio Grisù è divenuta un esempio nazionale di rigenerazione urbana, sia per gli aspetti sociali, sia per il metodo di trasformazione del manufatto. Si tratta della rigenerazione innovativa di un edificio dismesso e abbandonato della ex-sede dei Vigili del Fuoco. La trasformazione ha permesso: l’insediamento a basso costo di imprese creative con l’impegno di contribuire direttamente alla ristrutturazione, la valorizzazione del manufatto e la creazione di un hub di energia urbana dedicato all’intero quartiere. Oggetto di molti interventi in convegni e tavole rotonde è stato uno dei primi progetti realizzati di riuso di un edificio pubblico abbandonato con un atteggiamento progettuale innovativo. Il progetto con il suo carattere “aperto” prevede una solida struttura di servizi di base a garanzia della funzionalità e dell’accessibilità generale e una trasformazione dell'edificio per stratificazioni di interventi successivi. Sia gli interventi pubblici che privati accolgono usi compatibili con l'edificio. Il contenitore e il contenuto trovano insieme sinergie nuove e utilizzano tutte le risorse disponibili. Il percorso della trasformazione è frutto di un impegno comune fra enti, utenti e progettisti alla ricerca di sinergie che permettessero una trasformazione minima del manufatto. Il "PREMIO STERMINATA BELLEZZA" è "dedicato a esperienze e idee capaci di costruire processi circolari in cui qualità ambientale, culturale e e sociale convivono e danno vita a nuova bellezza" Il premio è stato assegnato all'associazione che ha seguito il processo "Spazio Grisù" e ai progettisti. Feature Fusion for Fingerprint Liveness Detection: a Comparative Study
No full textSpoofing attacks carried out using artificial replicas are a severe threat for fingerprint-based biometric systems and, thus, require the development of effective countermeasures. One possible protection method is to implement software modules that analyze fingerprint images to tell live from fake samples. Most of the static software-based approaches in the literature are based on various image features, each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and discriminative power. Such features can be seen as different and often complementary views of the object in analysis, and their fusion is likely to improve the classification accuracy. This paper aims at assessing the potential of these feature fusion approaches in the area of fingerprint liveness detection by analyzing different features and different methods for their aggregation. Experiments on publicly available benchmarks show the effectiveness of feature fusion methods, which improve the accuracy of those based on individual features and are competitive with respect to the alternative methods, such as the ones based on convolutional neural networks.Fil: Toosi, Amirhosein. No full textThis article discusses the ways in which Mu?tafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti rewrote Francois Coppee's Pour la Couronne (1895) in the shape of the novel, Fi sabil al-taj (1920). Al-Manfaluti turns a French drama into an Egyptian epic rather than simply introducing a piece of foreign literature by means of translation, so as to spread his call against imperialism and anti-colonialism and his program for fashioning an Egyptian national in the frame of 1919 Revolution. Whereas the author preserves all of the main events and traits of the original story, through commentary and word selection in his translation he orientates a new interpretation of the text. The article suggests that translation in the Nah?a cannot be seen only as acculturation but, in line with Venuti and Reynolds, should be considered as a new text that expresses the agency of the translators and their cultural environment

ATLAS TDAQ System Integration and Commissioning
No full textThe ATLAS detector will be exposed to proton proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 14 TeV with the bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz. A three-level trigger system has been designed to reduce this rate down to the level at which only interesting events are fully reconstructed. The level 1 trigger reduces the rate down to 75 kHz via custom-built electronics. The Region of Interest Builder delivers the Region of Interest records to the second level trigger which runs the selection algorithms with the commodity processors and brings the rate further down to ~ 3.5 kHz. Finally the Event Filter reduces the rate down to ~ 200 Hz for permanent storage. We review the trigger and data acquisition architecture and its in situ commissioning using almost full detectors. Results on system functionality and performance based on the cosmic data, early experience on LHC beam in 2008 and preselected simulated events are presented
The Narration of the maqāmāt: A Reading of ʾAbū Bakr b. Muḥsin Bā ʿAbbūd’s al-Maqāmāt al-hindiyya (1715) through Propp
No full textThis article conducts a reading of ʾAbū Bakr b. Muḥsin Bā ʿAbbūd al-ʿAlawī’s al-Maqāmāt al-hindiyya (1715), employing Vladimir Propp’s model of narrative functions. Although Proppian functions have frequently been harnessed to deconstruct essential components and plot architecture within the maqāma genre, the article emphasises the intrinsic limitations of this approach, especially when the focus is restricted to the analysis of isolated units rather than the entire collection. In accordance with various literary analyses, this research interprets the maqāma as a genre that orchestrates individual narrative units to synthesise a more expansive, novel-like overarching narrative. Within this intricate framework, the text accentuates the interconnected events between the narrator and the trickster. The emphasis lies on the multifaceted transformation experienced by both characters: the first encountering and engaging with the world’s complexity, and the second undergoing a progressive moral conversion, culminating
in his eventual demise. In the process, the article posits that the inherent quality of the maqāma of Bā ʿAbbūd, inspired by the models of al-Ḥarīrī, shows the flexibility of the genre. Within the predictability of its narratives, the maqāma is a genre able to become a vessel for diverse thematic discourses that the author seeks to convey
