Ante-Autobiography and the Archive of Childhood

    No full text
This essay examines the concept of children’s autobiography via several autobiographical extracts written by the author as a child. Although only a small proportion of people will compose and publish a full-length autobiography, almost everyone will, inadvertently, produce an archive of the self, made from public records and private documents. Here, such works are seen as providing access to writing both about and by children. The essay explores the ethics and poetics of children’s writing via the key debates in life writing; in particular, the dynamic relationship between adults and children, both as distinct stages of life and dual parts of one autobiographical identity. The term “ante-autobiography” is coined to refer to these texts which come before or instead of a full-length narrative. They are not read as less than or inadequate versions of autobiography, but rather as transgressive and challenging to chronological notions of the genre

Learning from biophysical heterogeneity: inductive use of case studies for maize cropping systems in Central America

    No full text
Global society has become conscious that efforts towards securing food production will only be successful if agricultural production increases are obtained through mechanisms that ensure active regeneration of the natural resource base. Production options should be targeted in the sense of that their suitability to improve agricultural production and maintain natural resources is evaluated prior to their introduction. Biophysical targeting evaluates production options as a function of the spatial and temporal variability of climate conditions, in interaction with soil, crop characteristics and agronomic management strategies. This thesis contributes to the development of a system-based methodology for biophysical targeting. Cropping system simulation and weather generator tools are interfaced to geographical information systems. Inductive use of two case studies - a green manure cover crop and reduced tillage with residue management - helped to develop the methodology. Insight is gained into the regional potential for and the soil and climate conditions under which successful introduction of these production options may be achieved. The resulting information supports regional stakeholders involved in agriculture in their analysis and discussion, negotiation and decision-making concerning where to implement production systems. This process can improve the supply of appropriate agricultural production practices that enhance production and conserve soil and water resources

Invariant solutions in large eddy simulation of homogeneous shear turbulence

    No full text
The unstable invariant solutions in the large eddy simulation of homogeneous shear turbulence with vanishing kinematic viscosity are obtained by Newton-Krylov-hookstep method. The small scale is represented by the standard Smagorinsky model with a constant Cs. It is shown that these solutions appear by a saddle-node bifurcation as decreasing Cs and have the same symmetry with Nagata's equilibrium solutions in Couette flow (JFM 217, 519-527 (1990)). Both lower- and upper- branch solutions are characterized by staggered streamwise-inclined vortex pairs. Also, lower-branch solutions are localized in the vertical direction, while upper-branch solutions are characterized by taller flow structures, which is consistent with the asymptotic theory at high-Reynolds numbers (K. Deguchi \& P. Hall, Phil. Trans. R. Soc A, 372:20130352 (2014))

The objective of the research was to identify the role of the Arts Workshop in the creation and execution of the work, through a historical reconstruction. To achieve this, the research involved a hermeneutic-reconstructive reading of the workshop arts on four nodes-categories: rational node, functional node, aesthetic node and communicative node; in addition, a pendular route was followed for each node with which it was always sought to understand the dynamism of the workshop in its systemic complexity. The most important result was the historical reconstruction itself, which is tested in this work, since there is no history of the Taller de Artes and since in the workshop-work-artist triad, the workshop has been an assumption, at most a means of low recognition. Finally, the most important conclusion of all that has been reached is that the workshop is a co-author of the work, a subjectivized entity, not a medium.PRELUDIO / DEL ORIGEN Y DEL COMIENZO / ESBOZO DEL TALLER EN CUANTO POLITOPO: A MODO DE CONCEPTUALIZACIÓN14 TRAZAS Y TRAZOS DE LA VIVENCIA (O LA PENDULARIDAD AUTOREFLEXIVA) / EL TALLER DE ARTES: ¿UN FILÓN ANACRÓNICO? In the present article, the author describes the process lived by young inhabitants of Ciudad Bolívar—one of Bogotá’s poorest areas—throughout the research that served as base for the book Ciudad Bolívar: la hoguera de las ilusiones. By means of hearing and dialoguing, as well as by presenting these young people’s stories tangled with their social contexts, and their experience with the “Memory Workshop”, the author approaches the imaginaries of youngsters from popular neighborhoods and their vision of the city

Influence of judoka height when using the seoi nage technique

    No full text
Judo techniques use the assumption of maximum efficiency with minimum energy expenditure, which means to try to use the strength of the opponent against himself, causing an imbalance that, associated with a technique, helps execute a throw. This study is aimed to evaluate the mechanical efficiency of the seoi nage technique applied to judokas (uke) of different heights in relation to the thrower (tori). The knee and trunk angular variation of tori was compared with the total throw time, the time to perform each phase of the technique, and the behavior and vertical variation of the trajectory of tori’s center of mass (ΔCM). Ten throws using the seoi nage technique on three uke of shorter, equivalent, and taller statures compared to tori were cinematically analyzed. The images were recorded at 180 Hz using the Peak Motus System. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Tukey’s post-hoc (p < 0.05). The tori’s mechanical efficiency was greater when throwing a uke of a stature taller or of his same height, while the total throw time was shorter for a taller uke. The ΔCM of the tori was greater to throw a uke of a shorter stature. The conclusion is that the seoi nage technique is most effective when applied against opponents of heights equal to or taller than the tori
