Alignment and Ergativity in New Indo-Aryan Languages /

    No full text
The book provides an overview of the alignment patterns found in modern Indo-Aryan languages. The analysis of the patterns of case marking and agreement leads to a balanced view on the concept of ergativity and evaluates its value for typological linguistics. The book offers an extensive discussion of previous approaches to ergativity. It analyzes four Indo-Aryan languages– Asamiya, Nepali, Rajasthani and Kashmiri– on the basis of text corpora. Examples from other Indo-Aryan languages are also adduced. The book is a thorough synchronic study of alignment patterns in Indo-Aryan languages. The book provides an overview of the alignment patterns found in modern Indo-Aryan languages. A middle Indo-Aryan inscription from China

    No full text
The work comprises a presentation of a decipherment of an inscription on ancient lead objects found in China’s Wei River Valley, and the Han dynastic histories that preserve their memory. To reach his decipherment the author provides a substantial assembly of lexical material — much of it heretofore unpublished and absent from dictionaries — including Indo-European, Sanskrit, Indo-Aryan, and Chinese languages. Augmenting the philological material is a meaningful observation of Brāhmī forms and Chinese graphs also missing from standard works. The author observes the implications of his decipherment for the study of the interaction between Indian and Chinese cultures in antiquity, as well as for the history of the early proselytisation of the Buddhist faith and philosophy outside of India. All of it results in a contribution that should be of serious interest to Indologists and Sinologists alike

Violence, terrorism and the role of theology : repentant and rebellious Christian identity

    No full text
What has come to be known within the Academy as, Identity theology, is presented in the literature as a monolithic belief system which supports and encourages terrorism and other forms of political violence. This dissertation argues that inattention to theological and social issues within the many Identity theology based groups in the US has led to a deeply flawed understanding of the relation between Identity adherents, terrorism and other political violence. Discussions about these groups in the literature are flawed and there is an imprecise understanding which has led to an inaccurate alignment of widely varied social groups with a pejorative classification that is neither descriptive of the various theologies at work, nor the social manifestations observed in these groups. Further, the research suggests that the academic community known as “Terrorism Studies” continues to contribute to the inaccurate understanding and that those inaccuracies are likely impediments to effective government policy in relation to the phenomenon known as Identity theology. The research presented here suggests that there are both theological and social distinctions, which can and should be delineated and understood by all those researching Identity groups. The research highlights four significant types or differences within what is now known as Identity theology, by highlighting the nuances between social groups including the Church of Israel, Covenant, Sword and the Arm of the Lord (CSA), Mission to Israel, KKK and Aryan Nations and suggests that a more precise understanding of the differences could lead to declining instances of violence and more openness to positive social change by those who currently follow these very different types of theological belief systems

The Aryan Myth and Tajikistan: From a Myth of Empire to One National Identity

    No full text
This article examines the intellectual genealogy of a central tenet of contemporary nationalist discourse in Tajikistan, namely, the Aryan myth as the idea of the Tajiks’ Aryan descent. The origins of this myth are discovered in Late Imperial Russia. Over the first decades of the twentieth century, through the early Soviet period, the Tajik Aryan myth would transform from a narrative legitimizing Russian imperial rule to a myth of Tajik national identity. The article shows how Tajikistan’s imagining and formation as a nation-state was inextricably linked to the Aryan myth and to the way it was articulated by imperial scholars-turned-Soviet orientalists, such as Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Semenov (1873–1958). Taking the microhistorical perspective of a single life allows the author to highlight the local Central Asian dynamics of the complex imperial situation that paved the way to and accompanied Bolshevik nationalities policy. As a scholar with a certain political weight, Semenov managed to exploit the leeway for action in accordance with his own research interests (rather than acting as a mere instrument of the imperial and Soviet regimes in Central Asia). Consequently, the article argues that the process of delimiting borders and identities in 1920s Central Asia was influenced not only by Moscow-based Bolsheviks and leading Central Asian Muslim political figures but also by Russian orientalists as distinctive historical actors

Typological variation in the ergative morphology of Indo-Aryan languages

    No full text
While New Indo-Aryan languages are a common example of morphological ergativity, the range of variation in ergative marking and agreement among these languages has not been examined in detail. The goals of this article are twofold. We first present a typology of ergative marking and agreement in Indo-Aryan languages, demonstrating that a progressive loss of ergative marking has occurred to varying degrees in different systems. This process is manifested in two distinct strategies of markedness reduction: loss of overt subject marking in the nominal domain and loss of marked agreement in the verbal domain. Using the framework of Optimality Theory, we account for the typology in terms of universal subhierarchies of markedness. Extending the analysis to dialect variation in one language, Marathi, we show that the dialect typology parallels the crosslinguistic typology, but only within the range permitted by changes already present in the parent language (Old Marathi). Furthermore, the dialect typology includes additional hybrid case-agreement systems predicted by our analysis. Author(s): Ashwini Deo 1, 1, | Devyani Sharma 2,

Dreamers of the Dark: Kerry Bolton and the Order of the Left Hand Path, a Case-study of a Satanic/Neo-Nazi Synthesis

    No full text
In 1990 a small self-published journal/magazine called The Watcher was distributed among New Zealand's occult underground. The Watcher described itself as 'the New Zealand Voice of the Left Hand Path', and was published as the journal of the Order of the Left Hand Path. The Watcher and the Order directed its attentions towards those occultists who identified themselves as Satanists and, as such, the journal articulated a distinctly Satanic philosophy and perspective. However, as the journal evolved and developed, renaming itself as The Heretic and The Nexus in later years, there arose alongside Satanic philosophy an increasing emphases on what could be called esoteric Nazism or esoteric Nationalism. Given that the editor of The Watcher was Kerry Bolton, a man who has been immersed in New Zealand's Nationalist/neo-Nazi movement since the early 1970s, such an increasingly political orientation was perhaps unsurprising. This thesis examines the way in which the Order bought Satanic and neo-Nazi ideologies together and the resulting synthesis. It also looks at the transition from being a Satanic order led by a neo-Nazi to an openly neo-Nazi Order that uses Satanic philosophy to justify and popularise its conception of National Socialism

Do vector plane waves form complete basis of solutions to Maxwell's equations? Introduction to Generalized Plane Wave Solutions

    No full text
The article is preprint version of a manuscript submitted for publication in a journal. The author is the sole creator of the ideas presented here. Please see the copyright notice in the document. As the title says, this article questions the well established belief that the vector plane waves form a complete basis of solutions to Maxwell's equations. Vector solutions to Maxwell's equations are presented here, which have planar wave-fronts and transverse electric and magnetic fields but spatially varying polarization. They form a one-parameter family specified by integer nn, and are termed as \textit{generalized vector plane waves}. The known vector plane wave solution with spatially uniform polarization, referred to as \textit{conventional vector plane waves} in this article, is a subset of this family obtained for n=0n = 0. In contradiction to the established belief, it is shown that these \textit{generalized vector plane waves} with spatially varying polarization (for n0n \neq 0) cannot be expressed as superposition of conventional vector plane waves. The family of solutions also includes the interesting cases of radially and azimuthally polarized plane waves for n=1n=1.Aryan, Saurav. (2018). Reikšminiai žodžiai: Gyvatė; Indoarijų ir baltai; Indoarijų mitologija; Indra; Mitologija; Pagrindinis indoeuropiečių mitas; Perkūnas; Varuna; Velnias; Vritra; Balts; Indo-Aryans; Indoaryan mythology; Indra; Lithuanian mythology; Pagan gods; Perkunas; Principal Myth; Serpent; Thunder; Varuna; Velnias; VrtraThe narrative of the mythological duel between the Thunder-wielder and the Dragon recurs in numerous Indo- European traditions and folklore. In reference to this common Indo-European myth, the article deals in particular with the parallels between Baltic and Indo-Aryan mythoreligious traditions. The research includes a lexical-semantic analysis of original Rigveda and Baltic folklore texts, critical text analysis and comparative methods. The article begins by presenting the schema, proposed by Russian philologists V. Toporov and V. V. Ivanov, of the common Indo-European myth, consisting of six universal mythologems that evidently correlate with the patterns of the myths found in Baltic and Indo-Aryan mytho-religious traditions. The author then proceeds with analysis and comparison of the shared characteristics between Baltic and Indo-Aryan protagonists, namely Perkūnas and Indra, complementing the study by adding a marginal, yet important, Rigveda character — Parjanya. This part of the article also involves an endeavour to suggest three interpretations that explain the Thunder-wielder’s role in Indo-European mytho-religious worldview. These are as follows: the Thunder- wielder as a militant ruler that falls under the second category in G. Dumézil’s tripartite ideology; his cosmogonical acts; and his close connection to the cycles of nature and fertility. The second part of the article includes analysis and comparison of the myths’ antagonistic characters Vṛtra, Vala, Ahi Budhnya and Varuṇa on the Indo-Aryan side and Velinas or Velnias on the Baltic side. The analysis begins with etymological and semantic evaluation of the mentioned names and then proceeds to compare the attributes and functions of the characters. For example, their connection to the primordial waters and chaotic state of the universe, as well as livestock and stones, rocks. The antagonists also perform the judicial function of a sovereign and act as secondary agents in antagonistic deeds. The analysis and comparison of the above-mentioned characters showed that Baltic and Indo-Aryan myths about the Thunder-wielder’s and Dragon’s duel share a common pool of mythologems. The findings contribute to the research of links and parallels among Indo-European folks and provide a basis for deeper analysis

ARYAN PRIMAMA. Along with the increasingly complex world of work problems, a tool or ethod is needed that can utilize existing information in order to support processes or activities in an organization so that their performance is more effective and efficient. CV. Aryan is a business entity in South Tangerang which is engaged in the textile business. Although the 21st century is the information age, the use of CV. Aryan, especially in the IT Operations section, is still very simple. The process of recording goods until their use is still done manually. The inventory system is simple, and uses a spreadsheet as a tool. The results of the existing observations show that there are several potential problems that occur, frequent loss of goods data, and delays in preparing inventory items.  From this problem, the author took the initiative to develop a web-based inventory information system to help the company's inventory operational efficiency. For this reason, a software development process is carried out based on correct software engineering. In analyzing and designing an inventory information system, the Extreme Programming method is used as well as research with literature studies, documentation studies, interviews, observations, and analysis and design using the diagrams contained in the UML (Unified Modeling Language). This study will describe the activities and use of goods at each stage of development based on object-oriented methods. The results of the analysis and design of this inventory information system are expected to accelerate the data processing process and can overcome weaknesses in the manual system, besides that it is also hoped that this system can facilitate the search for data needed for cooperative purposes such as reporting to the leadership. Transitive Nouns and Adjectives

    No full text
This book explores the wealth of evidence from early Indo-Aryan for the existence of transitive nouns and adjectives, a rare linguistic phenomenon which, according to some categorizations of word classes, should not occur. The author shows that most transitive nouns and adjectives attested in early Indo-Aryan cannot be analysed as belonging to a type of non-finite verb category, but must be acknowledged as a distinct constructional type. The volume provides a detailed introduction to transitivity (verbal and adpositional), the categories of agent and action noun, and early Indo-Aryan. Four periods of early Indo-Aryan are selected for study: Rigvedic Sanskrit, the earliest Indo-Aryan; Vedic Prose, a slightly later form of Sanskrit; Epic Sanskrit, a form of Sanskrit close to the standardized ‘Classical’ Sanskrit; and Pali, the early Middle Indo-Aryan language of the Buddhist scriptures. The author shows that while each linguistic stage is different, there are shared features of transitive nouns and adjectives which apply throughout the history of early Indo-Aryan. The data is set in the wider historical context, from Proto-Indo-European to Modern Indo-Aryan, and a formal linguistic analysis of transitive nouns and adjectives is provided in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar.</p
