Tuckerton Peninsula Salt Marsh System: A Sentinel Site for Assessing Climate Change Effects

    No full text
The Tuckerton Peninsula forms a large expanse (~2,000 ha) of highly inundated Spartina alterniflora salt marsh habitat along the southern New Jersey coast. Temporal and spatial changes in emergent salt marsh vegetation were characterized in three segments (northern, central, and southern) of the peninsula as part of a larger investigation to establish this salt marsh system as a sentinel site to assess future climate change effects in New Jersey. Monthly quadrat sampling at 90 plots along 9 transects in the peninsula during the June-September period in 2011 recorded 7 species of marsh plants (Spartina alterniflora, S. patens, Distichlis spicata, Salicornia spp., Limonium carolinianum, Morus rubra, and Symphyotricum tenuifolium). Measurements collected on maximum canopy height, shoot density, and percent areal cover of the marsh plant community in the heavily ditched northern segment were compared to those of the marsh plant communities in the shoreline-altered southern segment and the less impacted central reference segment. In general, species composition was similar between segments and no significant differences were found in maximum canopy height, shoot density or percent cover for any individual species. Spartina alterniflora was the dominant species. For all species combined, maximum canopy height and shoot density were higher and percent cover lower in the heavily ditched northern segment than in the other segments. No significant differences were found between the central and shoreline-altered southern segments for any of the three variables. Changes occurring in the demographic and ecological characteristics of the emergent salt marsh habitat in the peninsula are important for understanding future habitat change in other coastal wetlands of New Jersey and the mid-Atlantic region subjected to rising sea level and inundation.Manuscript title: Climate Change Effects on Plant Community Characteristics in the Tuckerton Peninsula Salt Marsh SystemPeer reviewe

    Michael Kimmel on gender

    No full text
Produced by Sut Jhally. We've heard again and again that men and women are engaged in a 'battle of the sexes,' that we're so differently wired and so foreign to each other that we might as well come from different planets. In this powerful new lecture, renowned speaker and best selling author Michael Kimmel ... turns this conventional wisdom on its head. With clarity and humor, Kimmel moves beyond the popular inter-planetary notion that 'men are from Mars and women are from Venus' to advance a decidedly more Earth-bound and interconnected view of the things men and women have in common

Assessment of Plant Community Characteristics in Natural and Human-Altered Coastal Marsh Ecosystems

    No full text
Salt marsh ecosystems provide many critical ecological functions, yet they are subject to considerable disturbance ranging from direct human alteration to increased inundation due to climate change. We assessed emergent salt marsh plant characteristics in the Tuckerton Peninsula, a large expanse (~2,000 ha) of highly inundated habitat along the southern New Jersey coast, USA. Key salt marsh plant parameters were monitored in the heavily grid-ditched northern segment, Open Marsh Water Management (OMWM) altered central segment, and the shoreline altered southern segment of the peninsula in the summer months of 2011 and 2013. Plant species composition and three metrics of abundance and structure (maximum canopy height, percent areal cover, and shoot density) were examined among marsh segments, along transects within segments, seasonally by month, and between years. Despite seasonal or annual variability, the northern segment of the marsh differed in plant species composition from the central and southern segments. This difference was partly due to greater percent areal cover in the northern segment of such upper marsh species as Spartina patens and Distichlis spicata. S. patens also exhibited higher shoot densities in the northern segment than the central segment. Despite the higher abundance of upper marsh species, marsh surface elevations were lower in the northern segment than in the central or southern segments, suggesting the influence of altered hydrology due to human activities. Understanding current variation in the emergent salt marsh vegetation along the peninsula will help inform future habitat change in other coastal wetlands of New Jersey and the mid-Atlantic region subject to natural and anthropogenic drivers.Peer reviewe

Membrane dysfunction in Andersen-Tawil syndrome assessed by velocity recovery cycles

    No full text
Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) due to Kir2.1mutations typically manifests as periodic paralysis, cardiac arrhythmias and developmental abnormalities but is often difficult to diagnose clinically. This study was undertaken to determine whether sarcolemmal dysfunction could be identified with muscle velocity recovery cycles (MVRCs)

    Competition for Andersen\u27s Clients

We examine competition for Andersen’s public clients during and after its failure in 2002. This setting provides a natural experiment to examine audit market dynamics at the local level. We construct a database documenting Big4 purchases of local Andersen offices. After exploring the factors associated with office purchases, we examine the impact of office purchases on public client market share gains and changes in audit fees. We find that three Big4 firms – Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and KPMG – purchased approximately 60% of Andersen’s offices while PricewaterhouseCoopers did not purchase any. The probability that a firm purchased a specific office is greater in markets where the acquiring firm: 1) already had a presence, 2) had a lower ratio of local Andersen clients to the purchaser’s clients, and 3) had already acquired relatively more local former Andersen public clients than other firms prior to the purchase. Our fee analysis expands the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) post-Andersen audit market study by documenting that the former Andersen clients’ change in audit fees is associated with the differences in client acquisition method

Early child neglect: Does it predict obesity or underweight in later childhood?

    No full text
Child neglect has been hypothesized to be a risk factor for both obesity and underweight in early childhood, although little research has examined the relation between neglect and body mass index (BMI). The present study examined the relation between neglect and BMI among 185 children (91 with a Child Protective Services history of neglect) who were initially seen at ages 4 to 6 years and who were followed through ages 7 to 9 years. Neglected and comparison children were found to have similar BMIs, although both groups had BMIs that were significantly greater than CDC norms for age, gender, and ethnicity. Neglect chronicity did predict lower BMIs but only at age 8 and 9 years. The present findings suggest that greater examination of moderators is needed to identify the specific contexts in which neglect is related to children’s weight. This is the authors' accepted manuscript for an article that was published in Child Maltreatment (2010), vol. 15, no. 3, pp. 250-254. doi: 10.1177/1077559510363730Peer reviewe
