Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) was a bandmaster, author, composer, and founding member and first president of the American Bandmasters Association. He received his musical training at the National Conservatory in New York, and from 1899-1909 he held the position of solo cornet with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1911, he formed the Goldman Band, and by 1918, the band was performing a free summer concert series, which later became known as the Guggenheim Concert Series. Goldman conducted this series until his death in 1956. Miss Mabel Marryat MBE and the league of loyal women
An Author Event presented by the Friends of the University of Adelaide Library, 15 November 2018, Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr Smith LibraryMiss Marryat's Circle: a not so distant past In 1915, the second year of the Great War, Mabel Marryat - granddaughter of South Australia's first colonial chaplain Charles Howard - joined the newly formed League of Loyal Women. Mabel was active in the League's emergency corps, 'women who are prepared to give their service in any need that may arise'. It wasn't long before Mabel was appointed Honorary Supervisor of the Red Cross Depot at the Keswick Military Hospital: No. 7 AGH. After the war, the hospital was renamed RGH Keswick. Here Mabel stayed for 30 years. This book gives voice to the women of South Australia's first 110 years of European settlement and opportunity to reflect on the changing position of women in society. But the spotlight shines on Mabel. Her long and devoted community service - particularly to her 'Diggers' - was extraordinary
Per una definizione del costrutto di autodeterminazione nella pedagogia speciale. Linee concettuali e intersezioni filosofiche
In order to analyse the features characterizing the binomial “self-determination and disability”, the present paper highlights the conceptualizations underling the psycho-pedagogical model of self-de-termination elaborated by the Functional Model and the Causal Agency Theory. In particular, in trac-ing conceptual and epistemological intersections between these theories and the analytic philosophy (especially, Donald Davidson’s works), the author draws attention to some ethical-philosophical issues opened up by these psycho-pedagogical theories. This confirms the crucial role played by the self-determination construct within the contemporary debate on adult disability

Minimum Wages in Kenya
This paper examines the performance of minimum wage legislation in Kenya, both in
terms of its coverage and enforcement as well as in terms of their associations with wages and employment. Our findings based on the 1998/99 labor force data—the last labor
force survey available-- indicate that minimum wages were better enforced and had
stronger effects in the urban areas than in the agriculture industry. More specifically, our results suggest that (i) compliance rates were higher in urban areas, (ii) minimum wages are positively associated with wages of unskilled workers and women in urban areas, while no such relationship is found for workers in agriculture, and (iii) higher minimum wages were associated with a lower share of workers in formal activities in a given occupation and location. Our estimates indicate that a 10 percent point increase in the minimum to median wage ratio could be associated with a decline in the share of formal employment of between 1.2-5.6 percentage points –and an increase of between 2.7-5.9 points in the share of self-employment.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/55760/4/IPC-working-paper-046AndalonPages.pd
Minimum Wages in Kenya
This paper examines the performance of minimum wage legislation in Kenya, both in terms of its coverage and enforcement as well as in terms of their implications for wages and employment. Our findings based on the 1998/99 labor force data – the last labor force survey available – indicate that minimum wages, which, in principle, apply to all salaried employees, were better enforced and had stronger effects in the non-agricultural industry than in the agricultural one. More specifically, our results suggest that (i) compliance rates were higher in occupations other than agriculture, (ii) minimum wages were positively associated with wages of low-educated workers and women in non-agricultural activities, while no such relationship is found for workers in agriculture, and (iii) higher minimum wages were associated with a lower share of workers in formal activities in a given occupation and location. Our estimates indicate that a 10 percent point increase in the minimum to median wage ratio could be associated with a decline in the share of formal employment of between 1.2-5.6 percentage points and an increase of between 2.7-5.9 points in the share of self-employment.Kenya, employment, minimum wages, wage
