Magnetotropism: A tropic response of Candida guillemondii by the effect of the oscillating magnetic field of extremely low frequency

    No full text
Extremely low frequency oscillating magnetic field (OMF-ELF) can stimulate the growth of pathogenic fungi. This work aims to assess the tropic response of a dimorphic pathogenic strain Candida guilliermondii by the effect of OMF-ELF. The pathogenic strain C. guilliermondii was isolated from an indoor environment and a brewing strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used as a positive control. OMF-ELF of 3 mT of 60 Hz for 2 h was applied to the cultures of both strains. After treatment, images were taken every 30 min for 24 h using Digital Image Processing (DIP) to determine the superficial growth rate of both strains and the length of the pseudohyphae, and the tropic response of C. guilliermondii. However, C. guilliermondii showed a tropic response depending on the OMF-ELF applied growing 3 to 60 times faster than the control strain, with a maximum value of 1.27 μm2/min between 1.5 and 2.5 h. C. guillermondii is resistant to OMF-ELF, a factor that stimulated its superficial growth rate and the elongation of its pseudohyphae, facilitated its cellular dimorphism, and oriented its ramifications to increase reproduction. This increase constitutes a risk to human health indoor environments where there is microbiological and electromagnetic contamination. Due to the use of DIP in real time with an adapted microculture technique, this is the first study to analyze “in vivo” magnetotropism of C. guilliermondii, as indicative of its invasive behavior for a possible infestation to humans exposed to this type of non-ionizing radiation in an indoor environment.Fil: Anaya, Matilde. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Effect of the oscillating magnetic field on airborne fungal

    Get PDF
This study shows that some species of fungi are affected by the magnetic field, which should be taken into account in studies of airborne fungal and air quality. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the effect of the oscillating magnetic field (OMF) on the behavior of colonies of three fungi genus growth in different culture mediums. The stains were: Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporioides and Penicillium citrinum and were inoculated in 90 mm Petri dishes with: Malt Extract Agar (MEA), Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) and Czapek-Dox Agar (CDA). Was applied them OMF of 60 Hz/220 V between 1 and 5 mT during 2 h and then they were incubated 7 days to 28 °C. Colonies size (mm) every day was measured. Stimulation in the colonies size of all experimental conditions was showed; the greatest size of A. niger in MEA was notorious. It was demonstrated by statist analyze that only colonies size with 1 mT was significance respect to the control. The effect of OMF on the cellular metabolism was evidenced, as well as: less exudation and major pigmentation of P. citrinum in MEA; variation of pigmentation of A. niger and C. cladosporioides in CDA and increase of conidiogenesis of A. niger in SDA. Was concluded that the applied OMF had a major influence on size colony and mycelia pigmentation of A. niger that C. cladosporioides and P. citrinum, independently of the nutritional state according to the culture medium employed in this study.Fil: Anaya, Matilde. koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

    No full text
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Antifungal effects of Curcuma longa L. essential oil against pathogenic strains isolated from indoor air

Curcuma longa L. essential oil can be considered a natural product with strong antifungal activity due to the fungicidal and fungistatic effect. It can be used for the aeromycological control of premises where food is prepared. It is important to monitor air quality in food production facilities to achieve safe food. The objective of this work was to evaluate the antifungal activity of C. longa essential oil on potentially pathogenic and biodegradable strains isolated from the indoor of the food industry. A suspension of 106 spores/mL of the strains Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium brevicompactum and Cladosporium cladosporioides was prepared. Two natural biocides (C. longa essential oil and Cuban propolis) and two synthetic ones (antiseptic detergent and Tween 20) at different concentrations (0, 0.001, 0.1 and 1.0% v/v) were evaluated. The superficial growth of the mycelium (cm) and the germination inhibition (%) were the response variables. In addition, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EO was determined by radial growth total inhibition (IRG) and partial sporulation inhibition (PIS). A. flavus colony diameter was decrease inversely proportional to the concentrations, and at 1% v/v it reduced more than three times its diameter, being selected as MIC since it caused IRG and PIS. Germination inhibition of the spores of the three strains was observed in relation directly proportional to the concentration of the four biocides. All spores with values similar to antiseptic detergent were inhibited by the essential oil at MIC (1%) between 41 and 55%Fil: Gámez Espinosa, Erasmo Junior. Provincia de Buenos Aires. Gobernación.
