    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Power monitoring of integrated circuits (ICs) is also essential, as today ICs exist in most electrical and electronic systems, in a vast range of applications. Many ICs, including power ICs, have functional blocks across the chip that are used for different purposes. Measuring circuit block currents in both analog and digital ICs is important in a wide range of applications, including power management as well as IC testing and fault detection and analysis. For example, the presence of different kinds of faults in IC circuit blocks during IC fabrication causes the currents flowing through these circuit blocks to change from the expected values. There has been general interest in monitoring currents through different circuit blocks in an attempt to identify the location and type of the faults. Previous works on non intrusive load monitoring as well as on power-line communications (PLCs) provide motivation for the work presented here. The techniques are extended and used to develop a new method for power monitoring in ICs. Most solutions to the challenge of measuring currents in different circuit blocks of the IC involve adding circuitry that is both costly and power consuming. In this work, a new method is proposed to enable individual measurement of current consumed in each circuit block within an IC while adding negligible area and power overhead. This method works by encoding the individual current signatures in the main supply current of the IC, which can then be sensed and sampled off-chip, and then disaggregated through signal processing. A demonstration of this power monitoring scheme is given on a modular discrete platform that is implemented based on the UC3842 current-mode controller IC, which can also be used for educational purposes.by Anas Ibrahim Al Bastami.S.M

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Stabilization of highway embankment using stabilized cohesive frictional soil with shredded scrap tire

    Limitation of exceptional construction sites, particularly due to fast growing of human population and economic development is common nowadays in Malaysia. Utilization of waste materials, which are lightweight, was one of the possible solutions that can be used to solve bearing capacity and settlement problems of embankments on soft compressible soil. It has been found that the utilization of tire shreds in highway construction offers economic and environmental benefits. Research focused on the determination of physical and engineering properties of stabilized cohesive frictional soils using shredded scrap tires. Laboratory tests according to British Standard 1377 were performed on untreated cohesive frictional soil, 100% shredded tire and mixtures of the soil and shredded tire by ratios of 90%40%, 70%-30%, 50%-50%, 30%-70% and 10%-90%. Results show that admixtures of soil and shredded tires by ratio of 70%- 30% give highest improvement in term of shear strength parameters with 23% improvement of internal friction angle compared to the untreated cohesive frictional soil with 310 of internal friction angle. Mixtures of 50%-50% produced the best lightweight mixtures with internal friction angle value was 340 and the maximum dry density was 44% lower compared to the untreated soils respectively

    Comparison between hydrated lime dry powder and slurry on peat soil stabilization

    This study investigates the effect of soil stabilization using hydrated lime on peat soil. Hydrated lime admixtures were prepared in two different methodsnamely: lime powder (dry) and lime slurry. The stabilization of soil samples were performed under three different proportions which are 3%, 6% and 9% of weight of dry peat soils. Compressive strength of stabilized peat soil under different mixtures process were evaluated by unconfined compressive stress test (UCT), and the performance of this admixture will be compared. Three different curing times are considered, namelyimmediate, 3 days and 7 days curing period. Lime slurry method for peat soil stabilization is more effective compared to lime powder admixture. Results obtained from the tests shown that the Unconfined Compressive Strength values under lime slurry were increased with the increasing lime percentage and longer curing time period. The maximum improvement was 950 % under lime slurry and for 7 days curing period compared to the untreated peat soils. However the unconfined compressive strength for lime powder decreases around 60% to 63% with the increment of curing period

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
