Phenol Removal by Novel Choline Chloride Blended Cellulose Acetate-Fly Ash Composite Membrane

A novel composite membrane (CM) was prepared by coating choline chloride (ChCl) blended cellulose acetate (CA) on fly-ash based ceramic substrate for phenol removal. Different amount (0-1 g) of ChCl was blended with CA to synthesize various CMs. Amount of ChCl in CA increases the contact angle, average pore radius, permeability of CM from 55.15° to 71.55°, 1.6 to 6.83 nm and 0.0057 to 0.0152 L·m−2·h−1·kPa−1, respectively. Phenol rejection increased from 56 to 93 % while increasing ChCl amount in CA. Phenol removal decreased from 94.26-64.23 % and 91.09-78.62 % with increase in applied pressure (69-483 kPa) and feed concentration (50-200 mg·L−1). However, removal rate increased from 80.46-92.47 % with increase in pH 2-12. Among all CMs, CC5 is identified as best CM with maximum phenol removal efficiency (92.7 %) and flux (1.86 L·m−2·h−1) at 207 kPa applied pressure and 100 mg·L−1 of feed phenol concentration. The obtained results reveal that blending of 0.9 % ChCl with CA can significantly enhances the phenol removal efficiency and this could be used as potential CM for treatment of phenol bearing wastewater

Conserve, Preserve and Rejuvenate Architectural Aspects of “Kanchipuram”

AbstractKanchipuram one of the seven holiest cities in India, is losing its cultural and historic importance. Well known for its multitude of values and Dravidian architectural style reflected in the temples, the city today has witnessed a tremendous degree of change from the original character. Studies state that its culture is slowly changing, being altered or destroyed because of urbanization and metropolitan influence. In the recent years the emphasis of its culture is being lost and the historic evidences have been disappearing. This research attempts to identify momentous character of this city and preserve the same with its values

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-44564-9_28This paper presents an overview of the PAN/CLEF evaluation lab. During the last decade, PAN has been established as the main forum of digital text forensic research. PAN 2016 comprises three shared tasks: (i) author identification, addressing author clustering and diarization (or intrinsic plagiarism detection); (ii) author profiling, addressing age and gender prediction from a cross-genre perspective; and (iii) author obfuscation, addressing author masking and obfuscation evaluation. In total, 35 teams participated in all three shared tasks of PAN 2016 and, following the practice of previous editions, software submissions were required and evaluated within the TIRA experimentation framework. The work of the first author was partially supported by the Som EMBED TIN2015-71147-C2-1-P MINECO research project and by the Generalitat Valenciana under the grant ALMA MATER (Prometeo II/2014/030). The work of the second author was partially supported by Autoritas Consulting and by Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España under grant ECOPORTUNITY IPT-2012-1220-430000.Rosso, P.; Rangel-Pardo, FM.; Potthast, M.; Stamatatos, E.; Tschuggnall, M.; Stein, B. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-24027-5_49This paper presents an overview of the PAN/CLEF evaluation lab. During the last decade, PAN has been established as the main forum of text mining research focusing on the identification of personal traits of authors left behind in texts unintentionally. PAN 2015 comprises three tasks: plagiarism detection, author identification and author profiling studying important variations of these problems. In plagiarism detection, community-driven corpus construction is introduced as a new way of developing evaluation resources with diversity. In author identification, cross-topic and cross-genre author verification (where the texts of known and unknown authorship do not match in topic and/or genre) is introduced. A new corpus was built for this challenging, yet realistic, task covering four languages. In author profiling, in addition to usual author demographics, such as gender and age, five personality traits are introduced (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) and a new corpus of Twitter messages covering four languages was developed. In total, 53 teams participated in all three tasks of PAN 2015 and, following the practice of previous editions, software submissions were required and evaluated within the TIRA experimentation framework.Stamatatos, E.; Potthast, M.; Rangel, F.; Rosso, P.; Stein, B. Postcolonialisme, femmes et migration dans l’oeuvre de Shumona Sinha

    Get PDF
Shumona Sinha, born in Calcutta in 1973 and living in France since 2001, has created a body of work that sets her apart in contemporary French-language literature. Her dual cultural heritage, poetic style, narrative strategies and thematic choices, inspired in equal measure by her own biography and her preoccupation with current social and political events, give rise to a global and dislocated view of the contemporary world, which the author scrutinises and questions with the same thirst for humanity and the same sense of revolt in the face of injustice, whatever the country or the cultural, political or religious context that makes the latter possible. At the same time, his texts underline the need to place literary reception in a post-national perspective, which is better able to capture the transformations of the literary in a post-migrant society. This book is devoted to the entirety of Sinha's literary output to date, and sets out to establish a first collective critical milestone in the reception of what we will describe as his ‘world work’

Clinical characteristics and novel mutations of omicron subvariant XBB in Tamil Nadu, India–a cohort study

Background Despite the continued vaccination efforts, there had been a surge in breakthrough infections, and the emergence of the B.1.1.529 omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in India. There is a paucity of information globally on the role of newer XBB variants in community transmission. Here, we investigated the mutational patterns among hospitalised patients infected with the XBB omicron sub-variant, and checked if there was any association between the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases and the observed novel mutations in Tamil Nadu, India. Methods Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, collected from symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients were subjected to real-time PCR followed by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to rule out the ambiguity of mutations in viruses isolated from the patients (n = 98). Using the phylogenetic association, the mutational patterns were used to corroborate clinico-demographic characteristics and disease severity among the patients. Findings Overall, we identified 43 mutations in the S gene across 98 sequences, of which two were novel mutations (A27S and T747I) that have not been reported previously with XBB sub-variants in the available literature. Additionally, the XBB sequences from our cohort had more mutations than omicron B.1.1.529. The phylogenetic analysis comprising six major branches clearly showed convergent evolution of XBB. Our data suggests that age, and underlying conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease) or secondary complications confers increased susceptibility to infection rather than vaccination status or prior exposure. Many vaccinated individuals showed evidence of a breakthrough infection, with XBB.3 being the predominant variant identified in the study population. Interpretation Our study indicates that the XBB variant is highly evasive from available vaccines and may be more transmissible, and potentially could emerge as the 'next' predominant variant, which likely could overwhelm the existing variants of SARS-CoV-2 omicron variants.Funding National Health Mission (India), SIDA SARC, VINNMER (Sweden), ORIP/NIH (USA).Copyright (c) 2023 The Author(s).
