El extranjero: Albert Camus vs. Kamel Daoud. Por un postexistencialismo libertario
The Stranger by Camus is one of the most widely read books in the world. This essay tackles Camus philosophy of the absurd in his philosophical tale, along with libertarian spirit that Daoud’s counter inquiry tends to defend, nearly half a century later, in The Meursault Investigation. Indeed the Algerian author offers a retelling of The Stranger in order to confront the absurd figured by Camus with those real harsh conditions of living that his own people had to endure, at least concerning its minorities. We are the absurd! This is the thesis the author wishes to defend. This dialogue between Daoud and Camus argues the issue of a potential process of independence and liberty from a libertarian and post-existentialist perspective.

Contemporary African Literatures Under Tension : A “Tokenized” Werstern Gaze ? The Case of Algerian Writer Kamel Daoud
Kamel Daoud has become a globalized author. His authorial figure, increasingly polarized between his homeland and his host space, makes him a controversial writer. Indeed, the Algerian writer is often criticized for adopting a discourse in line with the host literary field, in this case France, thus adapting an authorial stance adjusted to the ideas and ideals of the coveted literary space. In turn, the host field offers the Algerian writer the media coverage necessary for his literary and social recognition, which is often criticized for being conditioned by symbolic expectations. His posture, which oscillates between criticism of his own country and a discourse adapted to the French intellectual space, raises the question of his possible tokenization. In this article, we propose to analyze the mechanisms of the literary and social recognition of the writer Kamel Daoud from the tokenist prism, through his discourses within his work and outside of itKamel Daoud est devenu un écrivain algérien et africain globalisé.
Multiphase Modular Multilevel Converter Based Drive System for Oil and Gas Recovery in Subsea Applications
Adjustable Speed Drives (ASDs) in subsea/offshore oil and gas applications are involved in several processes throughout production, transportation, and treatment phases, as they supply pumps and compressors. Therefore, ASDs’ in subsea applications have gone through continuous development. The currently existing systems exhibit several energy-conversion challenges that negatively impact the industry costs and green energy. In order to improve the energy-conversion efficiencies, this thesis, apparently, adopts a trend of using low-rating semiconductor devices to handle medium-/high-voltage levels along the various drive system stages. A trend that is believed, by the author, to become in the near future the foundation of flexible, redundant, and compact energy-conversion in the majority of medium-/high-voltage power applications. This thesis proposes the employment of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) in MV-ASD applications in order to ease a transformerless operation while handling medium voltages using low-rating semiconductors. This, in return, reduces the system size and weight. The zero-/low-speed operation of MMC-based ASDs (a main challenge of applying MMCs in ASDs) is investigated in this thesis. The recent techniques proposed to improve operation during those intervals, implement complex hardware/software approaches. To cope with this issue, this thesis proposes multiphase machines for MMC-based AC-drives. Among several advantages regarding the power splitting, multiphase machines provide additional degrees of freedom compared to their three-phase counterparts. Novel exploitation to these additional degrees of freedom is proposed by injecting a secondary current component in the load current with specific magnitude and frequency during zero-/low-speed intervals enabling the drive system to function duly. Since the control of these secondary components is already inherited in the current controller structure of any multiphase machine, no additional algorithms or sensors will be required. Moreover, a hybrid-boost MMC converter is proposed to boost the MMC output voltage. The stepped output voltage generated by the MMC reduces or eliminates the filtering requirements. The boosting capability of the proposed architecture eliminates the need for bulky low-frequency transformers at the converter output terminals. In order to enhance the drive output torque, a Trapezoidal Phase Disposition Pulse Width Modulation Technique (TPD-PWM) is proposed in this thesis. Different slope angles of the trapezoidal modulation signal are tested and compared to other modulation techniques in order to select the angle with the best torque enhancement meanwhile maintaining good Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) levels. Moreover, the adopted modulation technique reduces the switching losses compared to the conventional Sinusoidal-based PWM. Eventually, a series-connected Half-Bridge (HB) modules are proposed as an Active Front End (AFE) rectifier for the drive system in order to generate an adequate DC-link voltage for the medium-voltage drive system using low-rating semiconductor devices. The proposed techniques through this thesis have been supported with both experimental and simulation results
A Literary Dialogue Between Kamel Daoud and Albert Camus: Colonial and Postcolonial Representations of the Other
How do we respond to the experience of encountering the Other, particularly in the context of colonial and postcolonial worlds? Do we see the Other, oppress the Other or care for the Other? In this dissertation I examine the nuanced exploration of responding to the presence of the Other in the remarkable literary dialogue that the contemporary Algerian author Kamel Daoud (1970-) has opened with the canonical French author, Albert Camus (1913-1960). I shall do so by focusing on Camus’s L’Étranger (1942) and La Chute (1956), alongside Daoud’s Meursault, contre-enquête (2013). In examining this literary ‘conversation’, the dissertation seeks to unveil new approaches in dealing with the Other and construct a connection between colonial and postcolonial narratives.
Albert Camus, an important figure in French literature, who was born in Algeria, explored the complexities of human relationship to the universe and others through his philosophical and literary writings. His narrative style and philosophical foundations contribute significantly to the broader exploration of the concept of the Other. In his famous novel L’Étranger, he deals with this theme within the backdrop of colonial Algeria. In contrast Daoud’s Meursault, contre-enquête is often categorized as a response to Camus’s colonial narrative in L’Étranger. It is argued that Daoud’s objective is to recover the identity of the colonized Other who is suppressed in Camus’s novel. While I argue that a close examination of this literary ‘conversation’ reveals that Daoud introduces a unique perspective within the framework of Camus’s literary works. His narrative not only engages with Camus’s text but also transcends the simplistic dichotomy between colonizer and colonized.
Consequently, this study concludes by asserting that the binary division between the colonizer and the colonized is insufficient to understand the place of the Other in Camus’s works and in a postcolonial setting like contemporary Algeria. My argument is that both Camus and Daoud transcend the binary definition of self and Other inherent in the postcolonial/colonial paradigm, offering a more profound and nuanced understanding of the complexities surrounding the lived experience of the Other
Kamel Daoud, a Parody of Writing or Writing Against History Meursault, contre-enquête and the Quest for Glory
Through a cross-story where he updates the anecdote of L’Étrangerby A. Camus, K. Daoud puts into text the brother of the Arab killed by Meursault. A witness, the less to say singular of the decades of independence, Haroun reveals the failings of Algeria cursed by a vengeful and hateful colonialist god and he sides with him. The status of assimilated or native suits him better than that of a free man whose freedom would be confiscated by a local regime that he denounces for its dictatorial function-ing. This article questions the facts recounted in Daoud’s novel, questions the distorting character that his writing subtends. History, like a series of commonly accepted events are altered under the pen of the writer. Then, Islamic religious facts are caricatured and diverted to fit the author into the universe of free artists, without any social neither moral responsibilitiesÀ travers un récit croisé où il actualise l’anecdote de L’Étranger d’A.
Famine falsehoods and publication ethics: rejoinder to Daoud and the Journal of International Development
My paper, ‘Falsehoods and Myths in Famine Research – The Bengal Famine and Daoud’ (2022a), refuted Daoud’s paper, ‘Synthesizing the Malthusian and Senian approaches on scarcity: a realist account’ (2018) which presented an empirical model of the Bengal famine of 1943 using his theory. I showed at length that most of his key factual statements were falsehoods, and most of these were contradicted by evidence in his sources. His analysis was wrong. In this rejoinder I show that his Response in the Journal of International Development has not attempted to challenge my criticisms. Instead, he wrote on a subject not relevant to them, diverting attention from them. He has also produced new falsehoods. There are multiple breaches of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines by the author and by the Journal. It is surprising that the Journal, knowing this, should have published this paper
