    The Responsibility to Protect: Norms, Laws and the Use of Force in International Politics

    This volume is a collection of the key writings of Professor Ramesh Thakur on norms and laws regulating the international use of force. The adoption of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle by world leaders assembled at the UN summit in 2005 is widely acknowledged to represent one of the great normative advances in international politics since 1945. The author has been involved in this shift from the dominant norm of non-intervention to R2P as an actor, public intellectual and academic and has been a key thinker in this process. These essays represent the author's writings on R2P, including reference to test cases as they arose, such as with Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar in 2008. Comprising essays by a key thinker and agent in the Responsibility to Protect debates, this book will be of much interest to students of international politics, human rights, international law, war and conflict studies, international security and IR in general

    Laccase-assisted surface functionalization of lignocellulosics

    Use of lignocellulosics has increased enormously in food packaging, composites and textile industries due to their advantages over other traditional materials which include renewability, biodegradability and low cost etc. Lignocellulosic biomass, a major raw material in such industries usually displays a very poor microbial and moisture resistance. Biografting provides innovative solutions to increase the performance of lignocellulosics with new properties including strength and stiffness, resistance to moisture and microbial attack. Biografting of antibacterial and other organic molecules on lignocellulosic biomass is an environmentally friendly and best approach to incorporate desired functionalities for successful industrial applications. Laccase, lipases, peroxidases are among the enzymes being investigated for biografting of organic molecules onto lignin for improved properties of lignocellulosic biomass. Lack of availability of suitable antibacterial molecules in large amounts and cost-effectiveness are the major problems for the commercialization of this method

Savant Thakur is first author on ‘HSP70 drives myoblast fusion during C2C12 myogenic differentiation’, published in BiO. Savant was a Ph.D. student in the lab of Professor Gordon S. Lynch at the Centre for Muscle Research, Department of Physiology, The University of Melbourne, working towards understanding the mechanisms of defective muscle repair in muscle diseases and wasting disorders. Sadly, Savant passed away on June 16, 2019 and so one of his supervisors, Professor Lynch, spoke to BiO about Savant's work and character

    Advancements in water footprints research for achieving sustainable development goals: an overview

    The water footprint (WF) is a comprehensive metric that measures the total amount of water consumption involved in the production of goods and services. It encompasses both direct and indirect water use, including blue water from fresh surface and groundwater, green water from rainfall, and gray water associated with wastewater and runoff. By providing insights into the impact of their activities on freshwater resources, the WF helps businesses, policymakers, and consumers understand and manage water use more effectively. The WF can be calculated for products, consumers, businesses, and geographic regions, providing a detailed view of water usage across the entire supply chain. Understanding the WF is crucial for promoting sustainable development and responsible resource management. It raises awareness of consumption patterns and encourages the adoption of more sustainable practices. For businesses, the WF can identify opportunities for water conservation and efficiency, leading to cost savings and improved reputation. Governments can leverage WF data to develop policies that support sustainable water management and ecosystem protection. Additionally, consumers can use WF information to make informed choices, fostering a shift toward more sustainable consumption patterns. The WF has grown into an established idea for investigating water use and its local consequences in agricultural and industrial output. Leveraging on recent advances, the WF concept is poised to be a useful tool for achieving all 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). This chapter intends to illustrate the WF concept’s potential to guide decision-making in both the public and business domains, ultimately leading to better water management and the achievement of the SDGs

Indeed, this function has quite a remarkable relation to explicit class field theory for the field K=F_q(T). We will see that these values, together with the values of its divided derivatives, generate the maximal abelian extension of K which is tamely ramified at infinity. We will also see that omega is, in a way that we will explain in detail, an universal Gauss-Thakur sum. We will then use these results to show the existence of functional relations for a class of L-series introduced by the second author. Our results will be finally applied to obtain a new class of congruences for Bernoulli-Carlitz fractions, and an analytic conjecture is stated, implying an interesting behavior of such fractions modulo prime ideals of A=F_q[T]

    Power Generation from Forest Residues

    The overall objective of this study is to develop techno-economic models for the assessment of power generation cost and optimum power plant size using forest residues as feedstock in Alberta. At the optimum size of the plant, the cost of generation of power is minimum. In this research two supply chains for utilization of forest residues in a centralized power plant were investigated. In the first option, the residues are collected, piled and chipped along the roadside in the forest. In the second option, collected and piled forest residues are compressed and bundled. These bundles are transported to the plant using a standard log haul truck. The theoretical optimal size without the constraint of the unit size of the boiler is 524 MW with a power generation cost of 74.20/MWhforinwoodchipping.Similarly,forthebundlingmethod,thetheoreticaloptimumis520MWwithpowergenerationcost74.20 /MWh for in-wood chipping. Similarly, for the bundling method, the theoretical optimum is 520 MW with power generation cost 87.30 /MWh. At an unit of boiler of 300 MW, the optimum size of the power plant is same as the unit size of the boiler. The power generation costs at this size are 75.50and75.50 and 88.50 /MWh for in-wood chipping and chipping at plant option, respectively. Total life cycle emissions in power generation through the two supply options are: 17.56 gCO2/kWh (in-wood chipping) and 15.8 gCO2/kWh (chipping at plant) at the optimal size. Biomass based power is currently not economical compared to coal based power in Alberta. At an average price of 60/MWhcoalbasedelectricitygeneration,thecarboncreditrequiredforthebiomassbasedpowertobecompetitivefortwooptionsare60 /MWh coal based electricity generation, the carbon credit required for the biomass based power to be competitive for two options are 28.20 /tCO2 and 29.60/tCO2attheoreticaloptimumand300MWpowerplantsizeforinwoodchipping.Thesamecostwas29.60 /tCO2 at theoretical optimum and 300 MW power plant size for in wood chipping. The same cost was 41.50/tCO2 and $42.90/tCO2 for chipping at plant respectively
