Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2007The aim of the present study is to analyse how issues of Albanian national identity are portrayed in Ismail Kadaré's novel Broken April (Prilli i Thyer), and how such features have been appropriated and translated onto the screen into a Northeastern Brazilian context. I depart from the premise that, even though Brazilian elements are indeed shown in the film, the non existence of the Kanun in Brazil, and the use of narrative techniques different from the ones employed in the novel render the story of the blood feuds in the film more universal than the genuinely Albanian reality depicted in the novel. In sum, the appropriation transcends the Albanian reality into a universal context, showing, at the same time, elements which are typical of the Brazilian culture.O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar como questões sobre a identidade nacional Albanesa são retratadas no romance Abril Despedaçado (Prilli i Thyer), de Ismail Kadaré, e como tais questões foram apropriadas e traduzidas para a tela num contexto Nordestino-Brasileiro.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The dynamic impact of government expenditure in education on economic growth

    No full text
The focal aim of this study is to examine the validation of education-led economic growth hypothesis in Malaysia under the recovery period following the 2008 world economic crisis. Specifically, this study implemented the augmented Cobb-Douglas model in order to observe the dynamic relationship between selected variables including, industrial production index, gross fixed capital formation, employment, government spending on education and broad money supply. This study adopted the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) in analysing the dynamic impact between variables and generally supports the education-led growth hypothesis in the short and long run. Specifically the study corroborates the bidirectional causality between education spending and economic growth, and vice versa, in the short run. The result also reveals that long-run equilibrium relationship exists between government expenditure in education and economic growth in Malaysia during post-crisis recovery regime. The education-led growth hypothesis can thus be inferred for the economy following crisis. The government should thus be advised that increasing education sector spending should increase post-crisis economic growth in both the short and long run. This is further strengthened by Granger causality test result which suggests unidirectional causality that runs from financial variable to economic growth. It is accordingly suggested that financial variable is a determinant of government spending on education in the aftermath of the economic crisis. Additionally, the study also supports the role of capital and employment on economic growth in the long term. By implication, the study suggests that financial planning as related to national education policies must be carefully and meticulously crafted, to ensure future success. This is linked to the investment in human capital which includes education expenditure at different levels that is essentially important to national long-term planning. The specific financial planning for human capital development is therefore very important to ensure the expenditure incurred contributes to sustainable economic development in Malaysia in the long term.</p

RESPON KH.

Evaluating the performance of traffic flow in four intersections and two roundabouts in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur using Sidra 4.0 software

Delays represent one of the indirect costs in terms of frustration, loss of time and discomfort to the drivers. On the other hand, it represents a direct cost in terms of fuel consumption/wastage on road networks during idleness and inactivity. Extreme delay at signalized intersections reflects the incompetence in the signal timing because of consecutive signalized intersections on the particular site. The traffic parameters performance is not a feasible method or practice. Furthermore, one of the significant ways to improve the performance of the network is by coordinating traffic signal in intersections. This study was done to highlight the ability of improving the level of service (LOS) of four intersectionstwo of them with four legs and two with three legs as well as two roundabouts in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya using SIDRA software version 4.0. In addition, the study aims to compare the results between each peak hour in terms of percentage of change in the variables and the delay. Moreover, consideration of geometric delay should be taken into account when comparing delays in peak hours in the morning and the evening peak hours. The results obtained show that the morning period is better than the evening period for the value of delay, queue, journey time and speed that was obtained from practical measuring in the study area. The average reduction of delay in the study area before and after optimization of SIDRA software is from 3489 Sec to 1571 Sec in the morning period as well as 5093 Sec to 1663 Sec in the evening period. The percentage of reduction was about 45% and 33% -respectively

Development of bicycle shift models in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Campus

Cycling is suitable for short trips and take shorter commute time for students who are living in the campus. Moreover, it requires lower costs and can reduce environmental pollution. However, cycling in campus is not well received by the students. This is due to certain factors such as hilly terrain, uncertain weather, and also the exposure to road traffi c accidents. A survey had been conducted in UKM Bangi campus to identify the factors that can infl uence students to choose cycling as the main choice of transport. Surveys were targeted to 170 respondents from the students in the campus. Two bicycle shift models were developed based on travel distance of non-hilly terrain and travel distance if covered lane provided. 76.5% of the respondent agreed that hilly terrain makes bicycle is not an option inside campus while 79.4% believe that the weather condition makes them not to choose bicycle. From both model, it is seen that the probability to shift to bicycle is increased as the travel distance increases if the terrain is not hilly and if there is covered lane provided. Overall, the study is a success and might be useful for future research on sustainable transportation system in campus
