The correlation salinity and electric voltage

    No full text
Oil, gas and coal currently constitute 94% of the total energy generation mix but the increasing demand of electricity, there is a need to be greater diversification of power supply sources in order to tackle the forthcoming electricity crisis. Several studies have started to investigate the feasibility of salt as sources to generate electric. However, the study on the characteristic of salt as electric source has not well documented. Hence, this study investigated the correlation between salinity and electric voltage. Two types of salts were analyzed, i.e., coarse salt and white salt. Based on the results, the generated voltage was linearly increased with the salinity in both types of salt. The finding could be becoming something useful such as a reference to develop a saltwater electric supply or other or to develop a measurement equipment to measure salinity in a liquid

The Feasibility of Music and Talk Radio Program as a Focus Stimulant for Driver

Long distance driver tends to listento the music in order to help them awake on theroad. However, several studies have reported thatmusic has repetition element which is a catalystto attention deficit phenomenon. This studyevaluated the feasibility of music and talk radioprogram as a stimulant to keep our focus behindthe wheel. N1 waves of 11 participants were studiedand the results have suggested that music is not agood stimulant for driving partner compared totalk radio program. All the participants showeda great attention when listened to talk programcompared to music of their choice

Human-agent experience sharing : Creating social agents for elderly people with dementia

    No full text
As intelligent technology steadily becomes a part of modern societies, people collaborate with agents more frequently, and so agents need to be socially intelligent, i.e. personalised and context-sensitive. This paper introduces a context-sensitive personalisation framework for social agents that facilitates the establishment of human-agent relationships by sharing past experiences through personal conversation, and sharing new experiences by engaging in joint activities to-gether. We apply the framework in a robot application for the dementia care practice: ReJAM - Robots engaging Elderly in Joint Activities with Music

Personalized gamification to enhance implementation of eHealth therapy in youth mental healthcare

    No full text
This dissertation focused on the added value of personalized gamification as a factor to enhance implementation potential of eHealth interventions in youth mental healthcare. Mental health disorders are the leading cause of disability in adolescents. It is important for these adolescents to go into therapy, as adolescence is a period in live in which essential developments occur on which mental health disorders have a negative impact. Although psychosocial therapies are effective in reducing psychiatric symptoms in adolescents with mental disorders, there is still room for improvement. For example, because of premature termination of treatment, poor attendance of treatment‐sessions and a low or non‐adherence to homework assignments...Design Aesthetic

homogeneous plate deformation as monitored by SLR networks and analysed using 3d affine transformation models

    No full text
This thesis deals with plate deformation as monitored in widely spaced SLR networks and analysed using the theory of 3D affine transformations, as an alternative for the more conventional strain analysis. The study is done in the framework of the WEGENER-MEDLAS project, a project to investigate crustal motion in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean by repeated determination of a widely spaced network by satellite laser ranging (SLR). Homogeneous deformation of a continuous plate can be described mathematically by a simplified 3D affine transformation model with 12 parameters relating position vectors of the plate’s material points in two different coordinate systems. The affine transformation model is decomposed in translational, rotational and pure deformation components and expressed in both cartesian and spherical coordinates. The 12 affine transformation parameters can be solved for in a least squares adjustment if a sufficient number of points is known in both coordinate systems. Formulating specific coordinate functions, sets of transfoimation parameters can be computed separately. The selection of the coordinate functions is such that only independent combinations between points are used, to avoid singularity in the least squares adjustment due to dependency of the (derived) observations. Plate deformation is monitored by the repeated determination of a widely spaced SLR network. Baselines being the most accurate observables, the distortion of the network is expressed in terms of baseline extensions and affine transformation parameters describing pure deformation of the plate. As the network stations are situated on the surface of the plate a spherical earth with invariant radius is assumed. The horizontal distortion of the network along the surface of the plate is then expressed in terms of angular baseline extensions and affine transformation parameters describing rotation and pure deformation of the plate.Civil Engineering and Geoscience

Long live the elderly: extending independent living by design

    No full text
The Dutch population is aging and therefore the Netherlands requires more capacity in care since this is currently not enough. Living independently as long as possible is a solutionand this solution corresponds to the wishes of elderly. Therefore the purpose of this research is to answer the following question: ‘How can architecture extend independent living while supporting elderly (65+) in their feeling of independence in daily life?’ Three types of independence are identified and discussed: the physical, the mental and the emotional independence and these are placed next to the different types of elderly. Because of the importance of feelings in relation to tangible requirements, anthropology and epistemology are the most used methodologies in this research. A difference has been made between environments that stimulate/heal and between environments that help/deals with your abilities. Nature has a big impact on the physical and mental independence, while people also like to show their identity as well as having their own place, which allows them to create a home feeling. Since every person is different, the environment should be diverse so this place can be inclusive. A neighborhood should stand on its own in order to let the people live independently for as long as possible. When growing old your health will deteriorate, this is confronting. Architecture is changeable, life is not. With the identified design options from this research, a built environment can be created that stimulate each person to be independent, physically, mentally and emotionally.Design for Care - Towards an inclusive environmentArchitecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Dwellin
