    A letter from Beverly Toyama and Hideki Obayashi to Miyoshi-san, informing him of the Kurata Ranch Reunion, which will take place in Gardena, California. The letter provides instructions regarding the time and location of the event, as well as suggested items for attendees to bring with them. It also includes a copy of a hand drawn map of Kurata Ranch, which is based on the recollection of Ume Murata.The James H. Osborne Nisei Collection contains mainly correspondence between Emiko and Usami Terada, incarcerees in the Rohwer incarceration camp, McGehee Arkansas, and the Thomas family in Lawndale, California, and photographs of the Teradas and the Thomases. The letters describe the trip from the Santa Anita Temporary Assembly Center to the Rohwer incarceration camp, their lives and conditions in the camp, and their concerns about their properties in Lawndale, California. Also included are photographs taken in the camp, some issues of "The Rohwer outpost," and fliers published during wartime

    Virtual reconstruction of the Neanderthal Amud 1 cranium

Objectives We describe a new computer reconstruction to obtain complete anatomical information of the ecto- and endocranium from the imperfectly preserved skull of the Neanderthal Amud 1. Materials and Methods Data were obtained from computed tomography scans of the fossil cranium. Adhesive and plaster were then virtually removed from the original specimen, and the fragments comprising the fossil cranium were separated. These fragments were then mathematically reassembled based on the smoothness of the joints. Both sides of the cranium were reassembled separately, and then aligned based on bilateral symmetry and the distance between the mandibular fossae obtained from the associated mandible. The position of the isolated maxilla was determined based on the position of the mandible that was anatomically articulated to the mandibular fossae. To restore missing basicranial and damaged endocranial regions, the cranium of Forbes' Quarry 1 was warped onto that of La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1, and the resulting composite Neanderthal cranium was then warped onto the reconstructed Amud 1 by an iterative thin-plate spline deformation. Results Comparison of the computer reconstruction with the original indicated that the newly reconstructed Amud 1 cranium was slightly shorter and wider in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions, respectively, suggesting that it was relatively more brachycephalic. The endocranial volume was estimated to be 1,736 cm3, which was quite similar to the original estimated value of 1,740 cm3. Discussion This new computer reconstruction enables not only measurement of new cranial metrics, but also inclusion of the Amud 1 specimen in three-dimensional geometric morphometric analyses that were previously difficult due to its incompleteness.Peer Reviewe

    Needs and prospects for public sector accounting reform: The Japanese experience

    Why does the public sector accounting reform take so much time in Japan compared with other countries? The argument for the necessity for reform was made long ago, yet why have the desired results not been seen until now? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions and to find out key to possible effective reform. Based on the survey carried out in 2013 with 786 local authorities nationwide, the author tests the following two hypotheses and reports the empirical evidence to support them; H1: there are more examples of financial documents being utilized among local authorities that adopt double-entry bookkeeping compared to those that do not, and H2: the response toward financial documents differs depending on the size of the local authority. These empirical results suggest that in the provision of public sector accounting information of clear utility, the issue of adopting double-entry bookkeeping cannot be avoided, while considering the differences in practical burdens on local administrations, this must be looked at in tandem with a rule that differentiates between different sizes of administration

    Enzymatic production of xylooligosaccharides from red alga dulse (Palmaria sp.) wasted in Japan

    Red alga dulse (Palmaria sp.) has xylan with a small amount of cellulose and less lignin, hence these characteristics may provide some advantages in the enzymatic production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS). To evaluate dulse xylan as XOS source, we prepared xylan rich fraction (DXRF) and attempted XOS production using commercial enzymes. 13.8% of xylan rich fraction (DXRF: containing 52.2% of xylan) was obtained from dried dulse powder. We then evaluated the hydrolysis products of two commercial enzymes, revealing that hydrolysate of Hemicellulase amano 90 contained less xylose. The effective XOS production by the enzyme was evaluated in terms of enzyme dose, DXRF concentration and reaction period, showing that 66.6% of XOS was obtained from DXRF with the hydrolysis rate of 82% under the following condition: 54 U Hemicellulase amano 90, 10 mg/ml DXRF, pH 4.5, 50 degrees C for 24 h. The solutions are compared with those predicted by existing theoretical models for mass transfer in the dispersed phase. The third section describes the experimental equipment and method of operation. Physical mass transfer in drops is studied initially. This established a basis for evaluation the effect of chemical reaction on the rate of mass transfer in a later study. The polarized absorption of the AZO-MWCNT film was measured by cross-polarized light along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the incident light under the irradiation of polarized ultraviolet light. Photoinduced optical anisotropy of the AZO-MWCNT film was dominated by the enhanced dipole transition of the nanotube axis parallel to the incident light and the decreased transition perpendicular to light. The unique anisotropy induced by the photo-orientation of azobenzene chromophore provides insight into the polarized optical properties of carbon nanotubes
