Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Risk Reduction Education to Prevent Preschool Children's Home Accidents: A Pilot Study
Objective: Preschool-age children experience many home accidents, and school nurses play a role in preventing these accidents. Methods: Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of training preschool-age children through an imagined hide-and-seek game using a model home environment, in cases that may pose an accident risk. This pretest-posttest control-group study was conducted between March and June 2019. In total, 72 preschool students were included in the study. The study group's education through the model home environment and game was assessed using the Determination of Home Environment Risks Form. Results: The post-education mean accident risk scores of the children in the study group increased in the kitchen (pre-education: 4.89 +/- 3.258; post-education: 9.56 +/- 3.549), children's room (pre-education: 6.17 +/- 3.776; post-education: 8.56 +/- 3.722), and garden (pre-education: 4.39 +/- 2.697; post-education: 6.72 +/- 2.953). In the study group, the mean scores of children for recognizing the circumstances that pose a risk of accident in the home environment were determined to increase significantly (P 0.001). The corresponding scores of the children in the control group did not change in the kitchen (pre-education: 3.89 +/- 2.025; post-education: 3.44 +/- 2.006), children's room (pre-education: 3.72 +/- 1.667; post-education: 3.50 +/- 2.158), or garden (pre-education: 2.83 +/- 1.813; post-education: 2.17 +/- 2.049). Conclusions: The new techniques, which will help children learn while having fun, should be integrated into preschool children's education programs to reduce home accidents
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Investigation of the Effects of Oral Care Methods on Oral Health in Children With Asthma Using Inhalers: a Quasi-Experimental Trial
Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effects of tooth brushing, wiping the mouth with bicarbonate, and rinsing the mouth with water on the oral care of children with asthma using inhalers. Methods: The study used a quasi-experimental quantitative research design with a pretestposttest control group. The sample of 6-10-year-old asthmatic children was divided into the tooth brushing training group (n=49), the bicarbonate mouth wiping training group (n=49), the water rinsing training group (n=49), and the control group (n=49). Data were collected using a "Sociodemographic Information Form" and an "Oral Assessment Guide". The oral assessment guide was re-administered 6 weeks after the children had received the education. Results: The findings showed that the gums were better in the group applying the wiping the mouth with bicarbonate method (P=.046), swallowing complaints decreased in the group applying the rinsing the mouth with water method (P=.003), and mucous membranes were better in the group applying the wiping the mouth with bicarbonate method (P=.046). Conclusion: As a result of the study, the method of rinsing the mouth with water was found to be more functional. Accordingly, it is recommended to rinse the mouth with water after using inhaler medication
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The Effect of Diabetes Education Given To Children With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus With Digital Games and Video Animation on Quality of Life
Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the effects of diabetes education given to children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with digital game and video animation on quality of life and metabolic control. Design and methods: The study was an experimental single-blind, randomized controlled design. It was conducted with a total of 55 children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, consisting of a study (n = 27) and a control group (n = 28). Data were collected by the "Introductory Information Form", "Pediatric Quality of Life 3.0 Diabetes Mellitus Module (PedsQL 3.0)" and "Metabolic Control Parameters Monitoring Form". Data were analyzed with Mann Whitney U, Chi square, Friedman and Bonferroni Dunn tests. Results: The descriptive characteristics of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus were homogeneous. The total mean quality of life scores of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p 0,05). The average HbA1c scores of the children in the study group decreased (p 0,05), while the average HbA1c scores of the control group increased (p 0,05). Conclusions: Digital game and video animation based education was found to be effective in improving the quality of life of children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and reducing HbA1c. Practice implications: Providing diabetes education to children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus with digital games and video animations can facilitate diabetes management. (c) 2025 Elsevier Inc. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
