    Fecal incontinence is a multifactorial disease. Anorectal physiology studies play an outstanding role in the evaluation of its etiology and severity, the two main factors that constitute the basis for the correct choice of treatment.     On a class of elliptic-parabolic equations on unbounded intervals

    We study a class of degenerate elliptic second order differential operators acting on some polynomial weighted function spaces on [0, +∞[. We show that these operators are the generators of C_0-semigroups of positive operators which, in turn, are the transition semigroups associated with right-continuous normal Markov processes with state space [0, +∞]. Approximation and qualitative properties of both the semigroups and the Markov processes are investigated as well. Most of the results of the paper depend on a representation of the semigroups we give in terms of powers of particular positive operators of discrete type we introduced and studied in a previous paper

    Effects of metal nanoparticles deposition on the photocatalytic oxidation of ammonia in TiO2 aqueous suspensions

    TiO2 powders modified through the deposition of surfactant-stabilized preformed metal (Pt, Pd, Au and Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) were tested as photocatalysts for batch ammonia photo-oxidation in aqueous suspension, under UVA irradiation. NH3 conversion and the selectivity toward mildly oxidized N2 and highly oxidized nitrite and nitrate anions were monitored during the runs, in order to study the effects of noble metal NPs deposition on the reaction mechanism. This involves parallel and consecutive paths, also depending on the type of metal deposited on TiO2, as also highlighted by the nitrite photo-oxidation tests performed in the present study. Metal NPs acted as electron traps ensuring better separation of the photoproduced charge couples and consequently higher rates of hole-mediated oxidation reactions. Apart from Au/TiO2, the metal-modified powders exhibited higher photoactivity with respect to that of naked titania, with Ag/TiO2 being the best performing photocatalyst in terms of ammonia conversion. On the other hand, Pd NPs on TiO2 ensured a considerable increase of the selectivity toward N2 and may thus be considered the best co-catalysts of TiO2 for environmentally friendly photocatalytic NH3 abatement

    We laconically describe the great contributions of Professor Francesco Altomare to mathematical research and PhD education, and his unique status in the mathematical community. In particular, we present and give examples of his innovative and great achievements related to the following areas of mathematics: Functional Analysis, Operator Theory, Potential Theory, Approximation Theory, Probability Theory, Function Spaces, Choquet's Theory, Dirichlet's Problem and Semigroup Theory. Moreover, we report on and give concrete examples of his unique way to work together with PhD students, both before and sometimes also after their dissertation. Finally, we shortly describe his remarkable “class travel” from “simple” conditions with no academic traditions in his family in the small hometown Giovinazzo to finally become the broad, ingenious, and powerful mathematician he is regarded to be today
