Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Charred Chronicles: People’s Perceived Experiences of Landscape, Attachment, and Recovery After Wildfires
Wildfires intensified by climate change jeopardize not only physical infrastructure but also the emotional scaffolding that ties people to place. On 30 June 2021 the Lytton Creek Fire in British Columbia destroyed 90 percent of the village, displacing more than one thousand residents and leaving reconstruction in prolonged limbo. This dissertation investigates how such abrupt landscape loss reshapes place attachment, how survivors renegotiate belonging while processing trauma, and how they envisage a future under continuing hazard. Guided by heuristic phenomenology that foregrounds lived experience and reflexive engagement, the study recruited seventeen adult residents of Lytton, six of whom are Nlaka’pamux knowledge holders recognized for cultural leadership. Between April and August 2024 participants chose among in-depth semi-structured interviews, participant-generated photo elicitation, and optional drive-along audio tours, producing more than forty hours of recordings, one hundred twenty photographs, and extensive field notes. Verbatim transcripts were processed through a three-stage coding sequence (open, axial, selective) within Moustakas’ (1990) six-phase heuristic cycle, yielding nine individual narrative portraits, a composite synthesis, and thematic findings. Five interlocking themes emerged: 1. Loss and Disruption captures temporal disorientation and grief as landmarks, routines, and soundscapes vanished; 2. Attachment and Belonging shows that sensory memories such as the scent of sage after rain or river mist at dawn sustained identity even when material anchors were ash; 3. Trauma and Vulnerability reveals how the blaze reopened colonial wounds linked to residential schools and chronic under-investment, compounding psychological distress; 4. Frustration and Accountability documents systemic barriers involving toxic-debris disputes, costly archaeological assessments, and contested rail-line liabilities that eroded trust in formal recovery channels; and 5. Hope and Healing chronicles grassroots solidarities, cultural ceremony, and landscape stewardship projects that helped residents transform charred ground into a canvas for renewal. Collectively the findings portray place attachment as a dynamic, multisensory process that can both intensify and alleviate post-disaster trauma. The study’s findings underscore that post-disaster recovery policies and plans must pair physical rebuilding with the renewal of cultural memory, social cohesion, and community agency as rebuilt square footage alone cannot heal the sense of home
Redefining life through ecovillage. Principles in a rural context, Avanos, Turkey
According to many recent research on the problems of contemporary cities, many of these cities mainly suffer from unplanned neighborhoods, overpopulation, lack of public spaces and easy access to green lands. As a consequence, academics, designers, and communities has begun to look for alternatives in order to heal the living environments. To that end, alternative lifestyles and methodologies for cities has become prominent as they offer effective solutions with easy and ready to apply techniques. In this regard, this thesis focuses on one of the solution methodologies mentioned, called Ecovillage, in order to provide solutions to certain urban problems within a certain context. Throughout the process, the thesis, firstly, analyses the literature in order to define a clear framework for the methodology itself and present a detailed discussion to the reader. Secondly, it introduces the selected location, Avanos, with details and analyses the environment by highlighting the problems of the area. Thirdly, the paper introduces two case studies in order to compare different approaches towards the definition. This way, the paper provides a critique of the classical definition and extends its with new components which will then be named as ‘Ecovillage 2.0’. In the last part of the thesis, the paper comprehensively explains the actions that need to be followed through the process. This way, a promotion of easy and ready to apply solutions to a town with certain problems are aimed and the idea of healing the living environment through promoting an ecological way of living is proposed
Place-Based Trauma and Recovery: Navigating Emotional Landscapes Amidst Sudden Environmental Shifts.
The evolving relationship between individuals and their environments, particularly during
sudden place-based changes, remains an essential area of inquiry. Whether individuals face forced
displacements or confront climate-induced shifts, the ensuing emotional and psychological reactions are
profound. This literature review dissects the depth of trauma experienced by those subjected to these
changes, emphasizing the role of familiarity and pre-change memories in fostering post-event
adaptation. One central discovery is the concept of "root shock," a form of grief that emerges when
individuals are suddenly uprooted from their familiar settings. For those forcibly displaced, nostalgia
emerges as a healing tool, anchoring them to memories of pre-displacement locales and aiding their
transition. Conversely, climate-induced changes introduce a unique form of emotional turmoil termed
"solastalgia." Unlike other displacements, these individuals remain amid their altered environment,
continuously reminded of their loss. Their grief, thus, persists, amplifying the challenge of recovery.
Central to these narratives is the inextricable bond between identity, memory, and place. Recognizing
this connection is paramount for devising targeted interventions to support affected individuals. As the
frequency of climate events and displacements rise, understanding these dynamics becomes crucial for
policymakers, therapists, and community leaders alike, ensuring that the trauma stemming from placebased changes is addressed comprehensively and empathetically
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
