    Effort estimation across mobile app platforms using Agile processes: a systematic literature review

    It is predicted that smartphone numbers will increase to 2.8B in 2018, up from around 2B in 2016. Moreover, revenue from application stores is predicted to reach 189Bby2020,upfrom189B by 2020, up from 88.3B in 2016 . Software effort and size estimation are essential when it comes to project managers being able to manage and plan a project so as to prevent it from failing. The planning and development of mobile applications differs from other traditional software applications due to the characteristics of the mobile environment, high autonomy requirements, market competition, and many other constraints. Therefore, this paper presents the results of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) concerning effort and size estimation models in mobile application development; this is followed by a summary of estimation techniques used across mobile apps. In particular, we focus on the software estimation models that are applicable to the Agile Software Development (ASD) process. The aim of this SLR is to provide researchers and practitioners with an overview of the current state-of-the-art software estimation techniques used in mobile applications. At the end of this review, some suggestions, research gaps and possible future work will be presented

The planning and development of mobile applications present many challenges. The aim of this study is to provide and report an overview on the state of the practice of effort estimation techniques that companies use for their mobile app projects. This study focuses on organisations which apply the Agile development process during their projects. We conducted structured and semi-structured interviews with 20 Agile practitioners at 18 different organisations. The results revealed that Planning Poker (PP) and Expert Judgment (EJ) were the most frequently used estimation techniques in mobile app projects

    Estimates of software effort, size and cost are essential to a project manager, in order to plan and manage a project to prevent it from failing. The planning and development of mobile apps are unlike traditional software applications due to the characteristics of the mobile environment, including high autonomy requirements, market competition and many other constraints. The aim of this study is to investigate the current state of practice relating to the essential factors and optimal techniques for effort estimation that help and support an Agile team to give reliable estimates for developing a mobile app task. The results of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of effort estimation models in mobile app development are presented; this is followed by a summary of estimation techniques used across mobile apps. In particular, the focus in the SLR is on the software estimation models applicable to the Agile Software Development (ASD) process. From the SLR, some research gaps are suggested, along with possible future work on mobile effort estimation techniques in ASD. Following this, the research aim and objectives are provided for this study, as well as appropriate research methods, strategies, plans and designs. In this study 20 interviews were conducted in 18 different organisations, consisting of both structured and non-structured questions. The result revealed that Expert Judgment and Planning Poker were the most used estimation techniques in the organisations. Some challenges and issues were raised and discussed around these techniques. The results, in addition, revealed 68 comprehensive factors and appropriate techniques that could be used in effort estimation for development of a mobile app. A proposed effort estimation technique has been constructed from the interviews. Moreover, the study presents case studies in three companies that examined and evaluated their current estimation techniques. It proposes and has validated an estimation technique to enhance the accuracy of existing techniques.     An Empirical Investigation of Spikes in Agile Software Development

    The use of spikes in agile software development (ASD) can enable organizations to produce quality software by employing the required technical expertise, planning the entire development cycle and ensuring that the client's requirements are adhered to. This study aims to examine the use of spikes in ASD. It explores the role, efficiency and efficacy of spikes in various software development domains through the different agile methods. An exploratory research design is adopted to achieve this purpose, whereby mixed methods are used to collect concurrently both qualitative and quantitative data from the experts recruited to the study. Based on the study's findings, this paper shows spikes' impact on risk reduction and their role in the estimation process, as well as how their use is related to the team's understanding and the consistency and reliability of the story estimate. Through interviews, it establishes that the primary role of spikes is risk management through investigations to understand user stories and reveal any uncertainty. Both the efficiency and efficacy of spikes were found to be high. The findings further showed that spikes improve the quality of the end product.<br/

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
