    Carboxymethyl alpha,alpha-trehalose (CMT) and a quaternary ammonium derivative of alpha,alpha-trehalose (QT) were successfully prepared, and their moisture absorption and retention activities were assessed. Results showed that both CMT and QT had better moisture absorption abilities at 43% and 81% relative humidity (RH) than alpha,alpha-trehalose. In addition, the two alpha,alpha-trehalose derivatives had better moisture retention abilities than alpha,alpha-trehalose under three humidity conditions: 81% RH, 43% RH, and under dry conditions. Therefore, carboxymethylation and quaternarization could improve the moisture absorption and retention abilities of alpha,alpha-trehalose. CMT and QT showed better moisture absorption ability and moisture retention ability than that of hyaluronan (HA), and could potentially find a use as moisture retention ingredient, for example, in cosmetics.     On stabilizing an α/α/α\alpha /\alpha′/\alpha^″ microstructure in ferritic superalloys

    Ferritic superalloys with an α/α\alpha /\alpha′ (A2/B2) microstructure constitute an auspicious materials system for high-temperature application and could help satisfy the need for more sustainable creep resistance materials. An exciting way to improve their creep resistance further through alloy development and microstructure engineering is introducing a hierarchical network consisting of α,α\alpha, \alpha′, and α\alpha^″ (L21_1). This work investigates the formation and evolution of this microstructure in Fe-Al-Ni-Co(Cr-Mo-Ti-Cu) alloys. It has been identified that the substitution of Fe by Cr leads to the stabilization of γ (fcc, A1) at intermediate temperatures. This amount of γ\gamma was found to decrease in the presence of Mo, and the transformation is entirely avoidable by carefully adjusting the α\alpha- and γ\gamma-stabilizing elements. The observations in quinary and senary alloys led to the development of two promising hierarchical α/α/α\alpha /\alpha′/\alpha^″ alloys with additions of Co and Cu. Both solutes are enriched in the precipitates and are expected to act as strengthening elements. Microstructural analysis of the particle size evolution in the range of 800–950 °C indicates that the precipitates undergo a non-classical ripening process at early stages with coarsening exponent deviating from the t1/3^{1/3}-relationship predicted by the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner (LSW) theory for multicomponent alloys. Furthermore, after furnace cooling from 950 °C, a pronounced reprecipitation phenomenon was found to occur not only in the matrix but also inside the primary precipitates

    Thalassemia Intermedia As A Result Of Heterozygosis For Beta 0 -thalassemia And Alpha Alpha Alpha Anti-3,7 Genotype In A Brazilian Patient.

    We report a case in which the interaction of heterozygosis for both the 0-IVS-II-1 (G->A) mutation and the alpha alpha alpha anti-3,7 allele was the probable cause for the clinical occurrence of thalassemia intermedia. The propositus, a 6-year-old Caucasian Brazilian boy of Portuguese descent, showed a moderately severe chronic anemia in spite of having the -thalassemia trait. Investigation of the alpha-globin gene status revealed heterozygosis for alpha-gene triplication (alpha alpha alpha / alpha alpha). The patient's father, also presenting mild microcytic and hypochromic anemia, had the same alpha and genotypes as his son, while the mother, not related to the father and hematologically normal, was also a carrier of the alpha alpha alpha anti-3,7 allele. The present case emphasizes the need for considering the possibility of alpha-gene triplication in -thalassemia heterozygotes who display an unexpected severe phenotype. The -thalassemia mutation found here is being described for the first time in Brazil.36699-70

    Mapping of the C-12* states via the B-10(He-3,p alpha alpha alpha) reaction

    We have studied C-12 in full kinematics via the B-10(He-3, p alpha alpha alpha) reaction at an energy of 2.45 MeV. In our data we have identified states in C-12 from the ground state up to about 18 MeV, with spins ranging from 0 to 4. Due to the very good resolution, we are able to determine properties of these C-12 resonances, such as their energy, width, and spin. In this contribution preliminary results from the ongoing analysis are presented. Main focus on the precise determination of the breakup spectra for all resonances

    Optimized protocols for the synthesis of diazolyl alpha,alpha-difluoroacetates via deoxofluorination of the corresponding glyoxylates with Morph-DAST are described. The method allowed the preparation of the title fluoridated building blocks in 73-96 % yield on up to 15 g scale. Utility of the hetaryl alpha,alpha-difluoroacetates was demonstrated by the synthesis of advanced building blocks for medicinal chemistry, i.e. carboxylic acids, amides, nitriles, and alcohols.LCBI

    We investigate the phase shifts of low-energy alpha-alpha scattering under variations of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model, namely the light quark mass, the electromagnetic fine-structure constant as well as the QCD theta-angle. As a first step, we recalculate alpha-alpha scattering in our Universe utilizing various improvements in the adiabatic projection method, which leads to an improved, parameter-free prediction of the S- and D-wave phase shifts for laboratory energies below 10 MeV. We find that positive shifts in the pion mass have a small effect on the S-wave phase shift, whereas lowering the pion mass adds some repulsion in the two-alpha system. The effect on the D-wave phase shift turns out to be more pronounced as signaled by the D-wave resonance parameters. Variations of the fine-structure constant have almost no effect on the low-energy alpha-alpha phase shifts. We further show that up-to-and-including next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, variations of these phase shifts with respect to the QCD theta-angle can be expressed in terms of the theta-dependent pion mass
