Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Levels of calcium and calcium/available phosphorus ratio in forced molting lightweight laying hens
Was found that increased levels of calcium caused a linear increase(P 0,05) the bone characteristics. Regarded to calcium and phosphorus balance, dietary calcium levels promoted a linear effect (P0.05). There was no effect (P>0.05) of levels of calcium on retention and excretion of phosphorus by birds, both in percentage and in absolute value, either. The calcium and phosphorus ratios did not influence (P>0.05) calcium intake by the birds, contents of mineral matter and calcium in the excreta in percentage and in absolute terms as well, retention of calcium by birds, in percentage and in absolute value as well, the percentage of phosphorus in feces and the percentage of phosphorus retained by the birds. However, when the retention of phosphorus was determined in absolute terms, the calcium and phosphorus ratios promoted a linear effect (P<0.05). There was also a linear effect (P<0.05) in the calcium/phosphorus ratios on phosphorus intake and on phosphorus excretion in absolute value. The requirement of calcium for commercial laying hens in second production cycle was estimated in the minimum of 4.3% in the diet that correspond an intake of 3.9 mg of calcium / hen/day. The better calcium: available phosphorus ration was 12.12:1, corresponding to a phosphorus intake of 325 mg/hen/day.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic
Valine:lysine rations in diets for white leghorn hens from 24 to 58 weeks of age
Two experiments were carried to determine the ideal ratio of digestible valine:digestible lysine in diets for light laying hens from 24 to 40 and 42 to 58 weeks of age. A total of 288 laying hens Hy-Line W-36 were used in each experiment. The hens were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with 6 treatments, 8 replicates and 6 hens per experimental unit. When they completed 24 (experiment I) and 42 (experiment II) weeks of age the birds received the experimental treatments that consisted of diets isonutrient, except for levels of digestible valine. The levels of digestible valine used in diets were 0,615; 0,653; 0,691; 0,729; 0,767 and 0,805% and 0,639; 0,678; 0,717; 0,757; 0,796 and 0,835%, for the experements I and II, providing ratios of digestible valine:digestible lysine of 81; 86; 91; 96; 101 and 106%. Was used a suboptimal level of digestible lysine in the diets of 0.759 and 0.788%. In both experiments the following parameters were evaluated: food intake (feed, digestible tryptophan and digestible lysine), egg production, avarege egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion (dozen eggs and egg mass), efficiency of digestible lysine utilization, egg components, weight gain, eggs unmarketable and nitrogen balance. In the experiment I there was a linear effect on weight gain. Was observed a quadratic effect on feed intake, digestible valine intake, digestible lysine intake, egg production, egg mass, feed conversion per egg mass. For egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass there was best fitted of the data to the LRP model. For the LRP model was obtained smallest sum of squared deviations. The ideal valine:digestible lysine ratio is 93,06%. In the experiment II was observed linear effect on digestible valine intake. There was quadratic effect on egg production and egg mass. For weight gain there was best fitted of the data to the LRP model. The ideal valine:digestible lysine ratio is 92,47%. The ideal ratio of digestible valine:digestible lysine recomme14nded in diets for light laying hens from 24 to 40 and 42 to 58 week of age are 93,06% and 92,47%, respectively.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológic
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
