No full textThe lack of visibility, significant investment and a presumption of fleet shrinkage falter the decision-making process of a Dutch airline. Five decision areas have been identified and for each decision area improvements strategies or alternatives have been designed. Selecting the best alternative per decision area is a multi-criteria decision making problem. Therefore, a more sophisticated method is required to support the decision-maker. For this problem the novel Best-Worst Multi-Criteria Decision Making Method (BWM) has been selected. The BWM has been successfully applied to select the best alternative per decision area. Platelet ice attachment to instrument strings beneath the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica
No full textOceanographic instruments suspended beneath the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, have recorded sporadic pressure decreases of 10–20 dbar over a few days at three sites where basal marine ice growth is expected. We attribute these events to flotation due to platelet ice accretion on the instrument moorings. Some events were transient, rapidly returning to pre-event pressures, probably through dislodgement of loosely attached crystals. Driven by these pressure changes, temperatures recorded by the shallowest instruments (within 20 m of the shelf base) tracked in situ freezing temperatures during the events. These observations provide indirect evidence for the presence of frazil ice in the sub-ice-shelf mixed layer and for active marine ice accretion. At one site we infer that a dense layer of platelet ice ?1.5 m thick was accreted to the ice shelf over a 50 day period. Following some permanent abrupt pressure decreases (which we interpret as due to the lodgement of the uppermost instrument at the ice-shelf base), altered background trends in pressure suggest compaction rates of 3–4 m a–1 for the accreted basal platelet layer. Attachment of platelet ice and resulting displacement of moorings has ramifications for project design and instrument deployment, and implications for interpretation of oceanographic data from sub-ice-shelf environments

Environment-insensitive two-photon ratiometric probe for in cellulo quantitative measurement of hydrogen peroxide
No full textThe quantitative analysis of a biological analyte directly through fluorescence imaging is essential in biomedical sciences but remains as a challenge owing to the environment-sensitive nature of fluorescence intensity. We show that a fluorescent hydrogen peroxide probe based on an in cellulo super-bright benzothiazolyl-benzocoumarin dye of which emission properties are insensitive to environmental changes offers a reliable and practical means for the quantitative analysis of hydrogen peroxide in cells and tissues directly through ratiometric imaging both under one-photon and two-photon excitation conditions. Different cellular hydrogen peroxide concentrations were determined for several cell lines and also for tumour and normal tissues. © 2021 The Author(s)11Nscopu

Aquaculture, fisheries, poverty and food security
Get PDFFisheries and aquaculture play important roles in providing food and income in many developing countries, either as a stand-alone activity or in association with crop agriculture and livestock rearing. The aim of this paper is to identify how these contributions of fisheries and aquaculture to poverty reduction and food security can be enhanced while also addressing the need for a sustainability transition in over-exploited and over-capitalized capture fisheries, and for improved environmental performance and distributive justice in a rapidly growing aquaculture sector. The focus of the paper is on the poverty and food security concerns of developing countries, with an emphasis on the least developed. The emphasis is on food security rather than poverty reduction policies and strategies, although the two are of course related. The food security agenda is very much to the fore at present; fish prices rose along with other food prices in 2007-8 and as fish provide important nutritional benefits to the poor, food security has become a primary concern for sector policy.Aquaculture, Food security, Fisheries, Nutrition
