De Tanagra collectie in het Allard Pierson Museum
No full textDeze dataset bestaat uit bestanden gerelateerd aan de archeologische vindplaats Tanagra (regio Boeotië, land Griekenland). Alle gegevens in deze dataset zijn afkomstig uit het Allard Pierson Museum, het archeologisch museum van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Deze dataset is samengesteld door I.F. (Ilona) von Stein MA (verbonden als gastonderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam) met als doel het verkennen van de mogelijkheden om een museumcontext zichtbaar, toegankelijk en vindbaar te maken in het elektronisch archief EASY van DANS.
Het Allard Pierson Museum kent haar eigen inventarisdatabases en beeldbanken die (grotendeels) publiekelijk toegankelijk zijn, zie ‘Relations’ in EASY. Het is echter interessant om op basis van alle beschikbare bronnen die het museum biedt een zo compleet mogelijk beeld te krijgen van een bepaalde deelcollectie. Als deze ‘oude’ museumcontext vervolgens verbonden wordt aan nieuwe onderzoeksdata (bijv. recente archeologische veldonderzoeken) komen we een stap dichterbij een interpretatie van het verleden van een bepaalde vindplaats of regio.
Als use case is gekozen voor de 'Tanagra collectie' uit het Allard Pierson Museum; Deze collectie bestaat uit alle museumobjecten met (vermoedelijke) herkomstaanduiding ‘Tanagra’, en de aan deze vindplaats gerelateerde collectiegeschiedenis.
De vindplaats Tanagra wordt in eerste instantie vaak in één adem genoemd met de typische, elegante Hellenistische vrouwenbeeldjes, de zogenaamde ‘Tanagras’, die eind 19e eeuw immens populair waren onder verzamelaars, handelaren en overige geïnteresseerden (Higgins 1986). Het Allard Pierson Museum heeft hier ook een dozijn van. Echter, deze beeldjes zijn afkomstig uit graven die ook andere archeologische vondsten bevatten (bijvoorbeeld aardewerken vazen, bronzen objecten en andere soorten beeldjes). Ook deze objecten zijn eind 19e eeuw in de schaduw van de Tanagra-beeldjes verspreid geraakt over de wereld (Stissi, V.V., 2005), en dus ook in het Allard Pierson Museum terecht gekomen.
De geografische keuze voor deze dataset is tot stand gekomen door de interessante mogelijkheid die deze regio biedt om oude en nieuwe onderzoekscontexten met elkaar te verbinden. Naast oude archeologische contexten (bijvoorbeeld museumobjecten in het Allard Pierson Museum en 19e eeuwse opgravingsdocumentatie), vindt er tot op de dag vandaag nog archeologisch veldwerk plaats in de regio (bijvoorbeeld The Boeotia Project). Deze geografische overlap tussen oude en nieuwe contexten biedt interessante wetenschappelijke mogelijkheden.

Depicts California as an island. Of note, "Terra Esonis" and "Mare Esonis" are shown in the northwest near Japan or "Iaponiaeins." "Louisiaene", "Nova Francia", "Nova Mexico", and "Florida" occupy the major portions of North America. The Canary Islands, Cabo Verde islands and the Azores are displayed prominently off the coast of Africa.
Above the title cartouche is a feathered crown. An elaborately costumed woman and slave figure with basket, and native flora and fauna including sugar cane, a parrot, aligator and an armadillo surround the cartouche.

Scale: 1:74,000,000Carel Allard (1648-1709) was an engraver and publisher of Amsterdam op den Dam in Kaertwinkel and the son of Hugo Allard, another famous map publisher and engraver (Tooley, 11). He produced a number of atlases containing large numbers of maps and town plans, many done by earlier cartographers (Moreland and Bannister, 116-117). His works include: “Atlas Minor” (1696), “Atlas Major” (c.a. 1705), “Theatre of War” (1702), and “Orbis habitabilis Oppida” (100 plates) (1698).
Gilliam van der Gouwen (fl. 1669-1713) was a Dutch engraver and worked for many well-known cartographers including Allard, Visscher, de Wit (1696) and Halma (1704) (Tooley, 257). Philip Tideman was an artist and map illustrator. Of his cartographic work, the best known is Turkish Empire (1696) in De Wit’s “Atlas” (Tooley, 620).
This map shows California with an "indented northern coast" and a noteworthy large area of land marked as "Terra Esonis" between North America and the Japanese islands. The map's title cartouche is the same as Valck's map of 1710 (McLaughlin and Mayo, 57, entry 132). Tooley notes that it shows California as an island according to Sanson's work and shows Nova Albion in northern California ("California as an Island," 127, entry 65). The map was published in Allard's "Magnum theatrum belli, quousque se hodie in orbe extendit…" in Amsterdam c.a. 1700 (McLaughlin and Mayo, 57, entry 132). Lowery writes that the map was also published in Allard's "Atlas Minor," no. 138 (Lowery, 193-4).
