Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Hǔtái, une sortie de l’insignifiance
Get PDFLes proliférations d'algues vertes, dans le Nord-Est de la Chine, sont un phénomène récent, qui s'est manifesté brutalement par un épisode de crise en 2008. Cette situation est associée d'emblée à l'enjeu de préservation d'une image de marque vis-à-vis des observateurs étrangers. Elle est à l'origine d'un traitement sur le mode de la mobilisation générale. Il s’agit, sur le plan matériel, de collecter des algues filamenteuses (hǔtái en mandarin) qui s'échouent en masse sur les côtes de la ville et aux alentours. Mais il s’agit aussi de construire un récit de cette sortie des eaux qui rende le problème gouvernable et ses interprétations maîtrisables. En quoi l’origine et le devenir de ces algues, qui circulent du micro-monde au macro-monde, se développent et se replient au gré de la rencontre entre des choix humains et des caprices climatiques, disent-ils quelque chose des rapports qu’entretiennent la mondialisation et la gestion des problèmes environnementaux ?Basé sur une enquête ethnographique menée sur les côtes de la province du Shandong en 2011, cet article montre la porosité et l’universalité des processus par lesquels les problèmes environnementaux intraitables sont rendus gouvernables, en conciliant l’impératif d’imputation d’une responsabilité de la pollution avec l’accentuation de la maîtrise technique des processus biophysiques. Dans ce contexte, la complexité des changements environnementaux contemporains apparaît comme une source d’acquisition de connaissances intellectuelles et pratiques de premier ordre : elle permet de circuler entre responsabilité humaine et causes naturelles, entre mobilisation de la figure victimaire et mise en scène d’un « pouvoir agir » restauré.L’étude du cas de hǔtái permet d’envisager des comparaisons nouvelles. Elle montre aussi l’intérêt de relier des phénomènes aux histoires et aux caractéristiques variées dans une perspective d’ethnographie multi-espèces, pour saisir la contribution des êtres de croissance aux dynamiques de globalisation.Massive macro-algal blooms are a recent phenomenon in Northeast China. The 2008 summer bloom in Qingdao Bay (Shandong) was the biggest recorded in recent human history. Occurring during Beijing Olympic Games, it rapidly acceded to worldwide visibility. In the Shandong province, green tides thus immediately raised concerns about the country’s and the province’s public and international image, resulting in a highly symbolic, strategic and organised struggle against Ulva prolifera (hǔtái in Mandarin Chinese). This struggle first consists in collecting drifting and stranded algae ashore Qingdao Bay. But it also consists in building narratives about algae’s exponential growth and circulation through time and space, from the micro-world to the macro-one, to make the problem governable and its interpretations manageable. To dissect this emergence phase helps to understand contemporary relationships between globalisation of material and immaterial flows and environmental issues management.Based on an ethnographic inquiry completed in Shandong in 2011, this article shows the aporetic praxis of governing intractable environmental issues, founded on two social imperatives: externalising the blame, and reaffirming a technical ability to control biophysical processes. In such a context, the complexity of contemporary multi-scale environmental problems, informed by science, helps to circulate between dramatization of the figure of the victim and of human legitimacy to restore hierarchical socio-ecological order. This unprecedented case study on a major environmental issue opens new avenues for further comparative research. It also shows how much multi-species ethnography can thrive on sprawling and growing beings to capture globalisation dynamics
