Lottie S. Vickers postcard to Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association, October 6, 1914
Lottie S. Vickers, a resident of Berlin Center, Ohio, sent this letter to the "Suffrage Headquarters" in Columbus to request literature on women's suffrage for a special meeting she was planning.
The Franklin County Woman Suffrage Association was formed in 1912, after the Ohio Constitutional Convention elected to bring to a vote the question of removing the words "white male" from the state constitution with regard to voting rights. Headquartered in the Chamber of Commerce building in Columbus, Ohio, the organization put out regular publications, organized public speeches and meetings, distributed literature and held parades in support of the suffrage movement. Women's suffrage in Ohio was defeated in a special election in 1912 and again in 1914 and 1916 before a resolution narrowly passed in 1917 allowing municipal voting by women in Columbus. In 1920, the 19th Amendment passed, extending the vote to women and prohibiting state and federal government from denying suffrage on the basis of sex
A Work Approach to Determine Vickers Indentation Fracture Toughness
According to the comparison of Vickers microindentation tests and Vickers macroindentation tests on several brittle materials, it is found that the ratio of hardness (H) to elastic modulus (E) is sensitive to well-developed radial cracks, but the ratio of unloading work (W(u)) to total loading work (W(t)) is not. Based on this finding together with the approximate linear relationship between the ratio of H to reduced modulus (E(r)) and W(u)/W(t), a new approach taking W(u)/W(t) instead of H/E as the input parameter to determine Vickers indentation fracture toughness is proposed. For this proposed approach, all input parameters can be obtained in one single instrumented indentation test for fracture toughness, thus the test procedure can be simplified significantly. The formula of the newly proposed approach is calibrated by the macroindentation tests on several brittle materials. The validity of the new approach is investigated by comparing its estimation with the old one's
Close and Conflictual: How Pupil–Teacher Relationships Can Contribute to the Alienation of Pupils from Secondary School
This article presents previously unreported findings from a larger grounded theory study which explored the intersection between pupil–teacher relationships and secondary pupils who are experiencing school alienation. Mixed data were gathered, using a questionnaire exploring teachers’ perceptions of their relationships with their students, alongside semi-structured, exploratory interviews with teachers and alienated pupils. A critical realist grounded theory design was employed, identifying closeness and conflict as causative mechanisms contributing new insights into the phenomena of school alienation. This approach allowed for data to be triangulated, constantly compared, and used to verify findings. This study discovered some pupils experience a more pronounced subset of alienation, where teachers perceive their relationships with such pupils as being less close and more conflictual when compared to their peers. It also identified that these pupils place an emphasis on negative experiences early into the formation of relationships with their teachers. Such experiences are viewed as critical incidents which are difficult to forget by alienated pupils. A diagram summarising this mechanism is presented, and the paper concludes with some professional strategies for teachers to help repair the relationship and reduce pupils’ feelings of alienation
Introducing Einstein's Relativity: A deeper understanding
There is little doubt that Einstein's theory of relativity captures the imagination. Not only has it radically altered the way we view the universe, but the theory also has a considerable number of surprises in store. This is especially so in the three main topics of current interest that this book reaches, namely: black holes, gravitational waves, and cosmology. The main aim of this textbook is to provide students with a sound mathematical introduction coupled to an understanding of the physical insights needed to explore the subject. Indeed, the book follows Einstein in that it introduces the theory very much from a physical point of view. After introducing the special theory of relativity, the basic field equations of gravitation are derived and discussed carefully as a prelude to first solving them in simple cases and then exploring the three main areas of application. This new edition contains a substantial extension content that considers new and updated developments in the field. Topics include coverage of the advancement of observational cosmology, the detection of gravitational waves from colliding black holes and neutron stars, and advancements in modern cosmology. Einstein's theory of relativity is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of the human mind. Yet, in this book, the author makes it possible for students with a wide range of abilities to deal confidently with the subject. Based on both authors' experience teaching the subject this is achieved by breaking down the main arguments into a series of simple logical steps. Full details are provided in the text and the numerous exercises while additional insight is provided through the numerous diagrams. As a result this book makes an excellent course for any reader coming to the subject for the first time while providing a thorough understanding for any student wanting to go on to study the subject in depth<br/
Shakespeare, Co-Author
Abstract
No issue in Shakespeare studies is more important than determining what he wrote. For over two centuries scholars have discussed the evidence that Shakespeare worked with co-authors on several plays, and have used a variety of methods to differentiate their contributions from his. In this wide-ranging study the author takes up and extends these discussions, presenting compelling evidence that Shakespeare wrote Titus Andronicus together with George Peele, Timon of Athens with Thomas Middleton, Pericles with George Wilkins, and Henry VIII and The Two Noble Kinsmen with John Fletcher. Part one of the book reviews the standard processes of co-authorship as they can be reconstructed from documents connected with the Elizabethan stage, and shows that all major, and most minor, dramatists in the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline theatres, collaborated in getting plays written and staged. This is combined with a survey of the types of methodology used since the early nineteenth century to identify co-authorship, and a critical evaluation of some ‘stylometric’ techniques. Part two gives detailed analyses of the five collaborative plays, discussing every significant case made for and against Shakespeare's co-authorship. Synthesizing two centuries of discussion, the author reveals a scholarly tradition, builds on and extends previous work, and identifies the co-authors' contributions in increasing detail. The range and quantity of close verbal analysis brought together in this book present a case to counter those ‘conservators’ of Shakespeare who maintain that he is the sole author of his plays.</jats:p
Shakespeare, co-author a historical study of five collaborative plays
"No issue in Shakespeare studies is more important than determining what he wrote. “The Listening Hand”: Piano Exercises for Contemporary Music
In the past 12 years, pianist and educationalist Catherine Vickers developed a series of specific piano exercises for contemporary music, which she published under the title Die hörende Hand (“The listening hand”) for Schott publishing, Mainz (two issues, 2007-2008; a third one will be out soon). Tonal music, by virtue of both its chord development in thirds and of its leading-note relationships, prompts pianists to develop special “leaps” of the hand, sometimes even specific muscle mechanisms. However, because contemporary music involves an ever-greater distance from tonality, it is now indispensable to modify, and extend, the internalized ‘leaps’ of the piano tradition to other sound relationships. Thus not only the ear, but especially the hands can ‘dive’ into the various stylistic settings of New Music, as a source of both emotional and physical enrichment. In her article, the author expounds the premises, founding principles and development of these exercises
Access to Information
The Chapter outlines the relevant provisions governing access to information concerning quality, safety and efficacy of medicinal products in the European Union. taking steps from the principle of transparency as enshrined in the treaty establishing the European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the author flags the constantly increasing demand for transparency and how the European institutions and the European regulators, namely the European Medicines Agency, has progressively moved from a reactive (i.e. upon receiving request for access to documents and information) to proactive disclosure of relevant information concerning medicinal products which they consider of public interest. An additional part of the paper is devoted to the criteria to be applied in order to strike the right balance between the demand for transparency and the need to protect commercial confidential information in order to mitigate the risk that leakage of confidential information may seriously undermine the proprietary rights of pharmaceutical industry. The new transparency principles set by the EU Regulation 536/2014 on clinical trials and administrative and judicial remedies are also tackle
