    “Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word”: Sexuality, International Human Rights, and Therapeutic Jurisprudence

    One of the most controversial social policy issues that remains underdiscussed in scholarly literature is the sexual autonomy of persons with disabilities. This population has faced a double set of conflicting prejudices: on one hand, people with disabilities are infantilized (as not being capable of having the same range of sexual desires, needs and expectations as persons without disabilities), and on the other hand, this population is demonized (as being hypersexual, unable to control primitive urges). Although attitudes about the capabilities of persons with disabilities are changing for the better, attitudes toward persons with disabilities engaging in sexual behavior have remained firmly in place for centuries. However, the ratification of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) demands we reconsider these attitudes. This paper will (1) review the history of how legal and social issues regarding sexuality have been ignored and trivialized by policy makers and the general public; (2) highlight sections of the CRPD that force us to reconsider the scope of this issue; (3) offer suggestions as to how states must change domestic policy to comport with CRPD mandates; and (4) Michael L Perlin* & Alison J Lynch**consider the implications of therapeutic jurisprudence insights for the resolution of these issues.Peer reviewe

    MOOCS: A case study of ALISON platform

    Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is a recent trend in distance or e-learning, offering an opportunity to the unlimited number of students from diverse geographical areas, academic backgrounds, and professional pursuits to study high quality courses from prestigious institutions. MOOCs offer a large number of resources that have generated great results across the globe and attracted massive audience due to its free or low-cost innovative courses. It has entirely changed the way of distance-virtual learning. It offers new opportunities for imparting education over the internet and provides learning opportunities to those who aren’t able to attend conventional classes. A large number of MOOCs platforms have been developed independently or in collaboration with various reputed institutions like SWAYAM, Udacity, Coursera, WizIQ, Edx etc. The present study will focus on Alison – Advanced Learning Interactive Systems Online, a major free MOOC platform. The study will explore Alison on parameters such as courses offered, subjects covered and publishers that Alison partners with to offer courses online

    Author of the graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, artist, writer, and archivist Alison Bechdel subverts both form and content with her cartoony imageword pairings and her unique combination of humour, self-deprecation, and critical reflection. In order to understand the connection between the method of deconstruction and the style of the graphic novel, it is important to briefly summarize poststructuralism and a few of its key terms, including discourse, deconstruction, and difference. While feminist and queer deconstructionist philosophers lay bare the phallocentrism of narratives that position the hero as 'western man', graphic novels like Fun Home take this a step further in that they offer unique opportunities for seeing but also constructing and deconstructing the social, teaching the readers how fixed or stable meaning is never reached in any signifying system

    A Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS) Training Facility utilising SMA Sunny Island Inverter technology and National Instruments measurement package

    RAPS systems can sometimes be a cheaper alternative for supplying power than connection to a distant utility. Most assuredly it is a cleaner method of producing electricity than coal or gas constituents, provided the diesel generator is used minimally. A modern RAPS system will generally have several sources of generation, typically they might be; solar, wind and a diesel/petrol generator coupled with a battery to store excess power. The RAPS 2 system at Murdoch University was selected for an overhaul early in 2010. The system was redesigned to include new inverter technology from SMA. The new system relies on 3 separate inverters to convert the sources directly into grid quality electricity, as opposed to some traditional RAPS systems that would have most of its elements feed a DC bus that connected to a single inverter. This novel way of setting up a mini grid finds its niche in situations when the terrain or meteorological conditions make it impractical to have generation equipment all localised and a DC bus would have higher associated cable losses. For such a system to be of educational benefit to tertiary students, the variables within the system must be able to be monitored. To this end an advanced measurement system has been designed and procured so that every measurable point in the upgraded system is available for display. The measurement system was designed using National Instruments compact DAQ (data acquisition) hardware, one of the first of its type to be introduced to the university. The compact DAQ unit has been coupled with isolation equipment supplied by Dataforth, which already has an existing prevalence throughout the engineering department. The subsequent measurement program monitors 31 system variables at a high sampling rate to provide real time information on the state of the system. The measurement program also monitors relevant meteorological aspects such as the solar irradiance and local wind speed. This report documents and details the steps taken to set up a new and novel RAPS system. Discussed are the approaches taken throughout the semester to project manage and facilitate progress. A detailed description is also given of the measurement and protection system that has been designed to allow students and the general public to get a good grasp on the performance of the system

    Quantal calculations on the rotational excitation of NH(_3) and OH in collisions with H(_2)

    Results are presented for quantal close coupled calculations of the rotational excitation of NH(_3) and OH in collisions with both ortho and para-H(_2). For the latter, these are the first calculations to include the rotational structure of the H(_2) molecule, whilst for the former, previous NH(_3) - ortho-H(_2) calculations have been subject to subsidiary approximations. The results from the NH3-H2 calculation show substantial qualitative changes in the cross-sections when ground state ortho-H(_2) (j = 1) replaces ground state para-H(_2) (j = 0) as the collision partner. In particular, cross-sections which were very small for NH(_3) - para-H(_2) collisions can be of a comparable magnitude with the other rotationally inelastic cross-sections for NH(_3) - ortho-H(_2) collisions. The changes in cross-sections are discussed in relation to the collisional pumping scheme for an astrophysical maser in the (jk = 33) inversion lines. From the OH-H(_2) calculations it is found that the propensities towards preferential excitation of a given component of the A doublets are reduced in strength when ortho-H(_2) replaces ground state para-H(_2) as the collision partner, similarly when (j = 2) para-H(_2) replaces ground state para-H(_2) the propensities are weakened. In both cases, the results are discussed in the context of crossed beam measurements at energies of 605cm(^-1)(NH(_3)-H(_2)) and 680cm(^-1) (OH-H(_2)). It is found that discrepancies between the experimental results and theoretical calculations for ground state para-H(_2) collisions can be explained, at least in part, by the neglect of the (j > 0) H(_2) rotational states in the latter

    Today, the definition of the Anthropocene is still very complex. Indeed, it isn't easy to illustrate a concept with many aspects. It is attractive, however, to understand how to interpret the human impact on the environment, and the concrete design of architecture can do so much to this end. In this contribution, I would offer an authentic and sensitive conversation with one of the most concrete architects on the international scene. I like to define Carlo Ratti as a "concrete" architect. Ratti's anthropocentric aspect is not only related to his design projects. His concept of the architectural project strongly represents the future part of the environmental system. How, more and more, the approach to the sensitivity and phenomenology of the present is the central aspect to be understood as a starting point to read future elements. In this regard, an architect creates a warning for the future generations who will inhabit the earth
