Text mining and the information content of Bank of Canada communications
This paper uses Latent Semantic Analysis to extract information from Bank of Canada communication statements and investigates what type of information affects returns and volatility in short-term as well as long-term interest rate markets over the 2002-2008 period. Discussions about geopolitical risk and other external shocks, major domestic shocks (SARS and BSE), the balance of risks to the economic projection, and various forward looking statements are found to significantly affect market returns and volatility, especially for short-term markets. This effect is over and above that from the information contained in any policy interest rate surprise

The Philosophy of Composition: Edgar Allan Poe, Sarcasm, and a Hoax
The Philosophy of Composition is one among many literary hoaxes that Edgar Allan Poe perpetrated throughout his life. Although it has been considered an essay of personal beliefs , the content clearly shows otherwise. The essay can obviously be considered a hoax for three reasons: First, Poe\u27s fiction writing stands in direct contrast with the theories that he proposes in the essay. Second, the ideas discussed in the essay go against Poe\u27s ideologies in the outside world, particularly those concerning the dark and devilish. Lastly, the overarching theme, The Unity of Effect, is so clearly against any the author\u27s practices that the theory itself collapses throughout the entire essay

Fair trade in food: the role of purchasing policy
This thesis examines the role of Alternative Trade Organisations (ATOs) in linking food producers in the developing world with consumers in the UK. 'Fair trade', as it has become known, involves consumers making purchases on the understanding that producers will receive benefits as a result of the trade. The inequities of the international trading system for developing countries is discussed, followed by a chapter which considers the expansion of the fair trade movement as a response to those inequities. Fair trade is facing new opportunities as it moves from a predominantly craft sales base towards more food products. The thesis explores the specific issues which ATOs must consider when trading in foods. Two chapters discuss the problems of trading with small, rural and often vulnerable producers in developing countries, and the role that ATOs can play in providing a more certain environment. The provision of appropriate information is shown to fulfil a particularly important function. It is argued that trade can be beneficial at a micro level but that ATOs must use policies which can help them 'maximise-the-best and minimise-the-worst' effects of the trade. These policies can guide them to trade relationships which are most likely to realise positive benefits to the producers. Part 2 of the thesis covers a case study with a large ATO, Traidcraft, whose strategy for the 1990s is to expand food sales. As part of this agenda the company wanted to re-write their Food Purchasing Policy and the research process to achieve this is described. All existing food products were reviewed against the new policy and the product group of dried fruit illustrates some of the issues which have to be considered by the company in the light of the findings. The thesis seeks to demonstrate how the purchasing policy can guide Traidcraft in their selection of producers. It also considers the complexity of bringing together producers and consumers in a way which is both profitable and sustainable

A secular age beyond the west: forms of differentiation in and around the religious field
Based on an international research cluster of country specialists interested in the nexus between politics and religion in countries of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, we have edited, together with Shylashri Shankar, a volume that compares the place of religion and the secular in countries outside the West.1 All contributors took as their starting point Charles Taylor’s “A Secular Age” (2007), in which the author argues that the widespread availability of an option of not believing first evolved in the North Atlantic world. He examines the processes by which this option emerged, mostly by focusing his inquiry 2 on developments in philosophy and religion (specifically, Western Christianity), while social, economic, and political developments for a large part remain back stage. In the following, we summarize some of the lessons our contributors have drawn from their case studies, sometimes paralleling, often contrasting those developments Taylor found to be key in the emergence of a secular age in the West. We close with a sociological framework through which contestations around religion and state can be systematically schematized and compared.

Prerogative legislation as the paradigm of bad law-making: The Chagos Islands
Through a detailed examination of the British Indian Ocean Territory (Constitution) Order 2004 and its impact on the Chagos Islands (a small archipelago of coral atolls in the Indian Ocean and a British Overseas Territory) this dissertation describes the characteristics of bad law - law that is low quality, inaccessible and ultra vires. The author identifies the anti-democratic dimensions of the law-making involved, highlighting the ways in which the 2004 Order is legislation without a legislature; was not voted upon or assented to by the British Parliament; was not the subject of a referendum among the Chagossians and was not voted upon by any representatives of the Chagossians
Products of their Past? Cleavages and Intra-Party Dissent Over European Integration. IHS Political Science Series Paper No. 118. February 2009
What explains contemporary intra-party dissent on EU issues? This article develops a cleavage theory model of internal party dissent over European integration. Drawing on Lipset and Rokkan’s classic model of political cleavages and on its applications to party positioning on European integration, I argue that if one seeks to understand when, where, and to what extent internal divisions manifest themselves, one must look to the particular historical vulnerabilities of political parties. Using expert survey data, I demonstrate that the ease with which political parties are able to assimilate the issue of European integration is influenced by the legacy of past political tensions and the extent to which the economic and political aspects of the EU reactivate pre-existing cleavages
