Repositioning the graphic designer as researcher
In academic terms, the discipline of graphic design is relatively young. Consequently the position of the discipline within academic territory, and the role of the designer, continue to be debated. In part, these debates have been a product of attempts to define and defend the discipline’s borders from within, in order to establish a sense of the role of graphic design and the graphic designer as commensurate with other disciplines both within and beyond art and design. In recent years graphic designers have variously been defined as ‘authors’, ‘producers’ and ‘readers’, yet none of these definitions seem to have provided any kind of productive or lasting impact within the academy. This paper suggests that rather than continue to seek territorial definitions and positions from within, it could be more productive to look beyond the confines of the discipline. Gaining a broader, interdisciplinary perspective on, and understanding of, qualitative research methods from other disciplines may enable the graphic designer to more fully position his or her practice within the wider academy. Such a perspective could help facilitate the repositioning and redefinition of the graphic designer as ‘researcher’ - a move that would be productive in relation to the future development of postgraduate research within the discipline

Thomas Freeman Hudson Papers - Accession 474
The Thomas Freeman Hudson Papers primarily consists of Father Hudson’s work in the Episcopal Church, specifically ecumenical activities and contains letters, newspapers, articles, papers, receipts, newsletters, bulletins, journals, pamphlets, and monographs. There is considerable information pertaining to the Consultation on Church Commission, all of which involved Father Hudson. Most of the material is concentrated between the years 1969 and 1978, when Father Hudson held the office of Ecumenical officer for Uppers South Carolina. While this collection contains considerable correspondence, it has been filed topically, not according to author. The researcher will find an appendix of publications in alphabetical order.https://digitalcommons.winthrop.edu/manuscriptcollection_findingaids/1596/thumbnail.jp

From High Line to Hudson
"From High Line to Hudson" focuses on reconnecting the waterfront to its inner city grid. The project is based in the area of Chelsea in Manhattan, New York City. Much of New York City’s waterfronts have become disconnected to its inner public realm. In the case of Manhattan, multi-lane highways and large industrial lots exist in some areas to act as a physical barrier, vastly reducing the chance for the waterfronts to be properly utilised. This design proposal will act as a stepping stone between the High Line and the Hudson River, creating a physical connection between the city grid and the waterfront, with a focus on pedestrian traffic.Delta InterventionsArchitectureArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Polyphony and the anxiety of influence in the fiction of Henry James
James's fiction, especially in the Middle Phase, centres
on the figure of the artist and is characterized by, the two
interrelated aspects which previous criticism has largely
overlooked: the Bakhtinian 'polyphonic' -creation of
'author-thinkers'; and the conflict between ephebes and
precursors, for which Harold-Bloom's concept of 'the-anxiety of
influence' is the most illuminating model. Polyphony is the
narrative mode, and influence is the intra-artistic, theme.
These, as the Introduction to the thesis makes clear, are
rehearsed in James's inaugural novel, Roderick Hudson. Rowland
Mallet is an author-thinker, and his failure is caused by
authorial limitations. His monologism -is impaired by his
mistaking empathy for the authorial sympathy. Likewise,
Hudson's failure does not arise from a mercurial temperament,
but from a polyphonic shortcoming: not possessing the power of
fiction to contain the fiction of power in, his mentor. And the
relationships among the three artists - Gloriani, Hudson and
Singleton - perfectly exemplify the Bloomian-theme. It is these
two concepts, polyphony and influence, which are the major
preoccupation in the Middle Phase; as, the works chosen
demonstrate. These are a novella, a novel, and a number of
short stories all of which have been unjustifiably neglected.
Chapter One, on The Aspern Papers, argues that Tina Bordereau,
far from being, the artless victim seen by many critics,
actually challenges and defeats the narrator by the very form
of her narrative. Her 'realist' discourse undermines his
language of 'romance', and shows up its internal unstability.
Chapter Two is an extensive study of the critical reception of
The Tragic Muse. The most common areas of critical attention
have been its contemporary topicality, its relation to previous
novels on similar themes, and the possible genealogy of Gabriel
Nash. Those have all missed the core of the work. - Chapter Three
demonstrates how polyphony and the anxiety of influence make
the novel what it really is. Influence arises from the
juxtaposition of, and the wrestling between, artistic ephebes
and their precursors (Nick and Nash,, Miriam and Madame Carre).
The dialogic quality defined by Bakhtin is crucial to the
proper, and even-handed, characterization of all, the conflicts
in the novel. And since most of James's tales in the eighties
and nineties -are about 'masters - and acolytes, the anxiety of
influence remains central. Chapter Four is a study of 'The
Author of Beltraffiol' and 'The Lesson of the Master'. Again the
characters' manipulations are a crucial focus in a way that
G6rard Genette's terminology helps to illuminate. The fact that
the ephebe is the author-thinker emphasizes the inextricability
of the Bakhtinian and the Bloomian in James. Just as
polyphony offers a different focus for explicating the poetics
of James's fiction; so the ephebal conflict provides the basis
for a fresh perception of James's own artistic struggle

Hudson Region?
Abstract: In this article we postulate the existence of what we call Hudson Region. For
this we choose the name of region (Molina y Varela; Heredia), but we enrich the concept with
what regionality (Arendt) and bioregion (McGinnis et alii) have to contribute. In turn, our
perspective on this region is eco, according to some of the theorists of the broad spectrum of
ecocriticism, especially Mathews, Naess and Fukuoka. This choice seems to be the natural
course when considering an author like William Henry Hudson, who has been concerned with
natural conservation since the 19th century. Thus, we seek for notes of what we will consider
region. We will use for the Hudson Region the cognitive elements indicated for it by Mariana
N. Saua and finally we will test this region is specified. It is not an abstract proposal but is born from verifying that in Río de la Plata area exist many productions that, in different ways,
are located in Hudson‘s wake, in terms of: love for nature, its perception as an intimate
experience and, later, setting it in discursive means. Here, in addition to considering his Far
Away and Long Ago (1918), we add the works Allá en lo verde Hudson (2012), by Arnaldo
Calveyra; Libro de horas (2015), by Laura Forchetti; and Ornitología para principiantes
(2018), by Daniel Dellazuana
