An overarching framework to assess the life-time resilience of deteriorating transportation networks in seismic-prone regions
This study develops a comprehensive framework to assess the resilience of transportation networks consisting of deteriorating bridges subjected to earthquake events. For this purpose, the structural capacity of highway bridges is estimated during their service life using a set of detailed finite-element models that simulate the progress of deterioration. The developed models take into consideration the main environmental stressors and determine the extent of capacity loss as a function of time. Based on the degraded state of structural components, seismic fragility analyses are performed to obtain a probabilistic evaluation of the extent of damageability of the existing bridges under seismic events. Since each transportation link normally consists of a number of bridges, the state of damage in the individual bridges is mapped to the corresponding links and a scenario-based approach is employed to estimate the resilience of the entire transportation network. To demonstrate how the consequences of structural degradation can be integrated into the developed framework, the large-scale transportation network of Los Angeles and Orange counties is investigated under a series of aging and earthquake scenarios. The outcome of this study indicates how the estimates associated with the functionality measures of a transportation network can be improved if the age factor is properly integrated into the framework used for resilience assessment.This article is published as Alipour, Alice, and Behrouz Shafei. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. An integrated analytical, experimental, and field investigation approach for fatigue life assessment of traffic signal structures and high-mast luminaires
Recent failures of high-mast luminaire structures and traffic signal structures have showcased the vulnerability of such structures to wind loading. Both structures are slender and have low mechanical damping which result in the difficulty to damp out the wind-induced vibration. Once the wind-induced vibration exceeds a large number of cycles, fatigue crack will first initiate at the location with high stress level and fatigue failure will happen eventually. Failures of such structures have been reported across the United States over the past 20 years. The present research focuses on predicting their wind-induced response and estimating their fatigue life and reliability through an integrated analytical, experimental and field observation approach.
The present research included four studies. In the first study, a simulation-based framework was proposed to estimate the fatigue life and reliability of high mast luminaire structures. A finite element model of a high mast luminaire structure was built. Wind history along the height of the structure was simulated by considering Kaimal spectrum and space coherence. Wind simulations were conducted by applying wind loads on the structure in both along-wind and across-wind directions. The simulated stress response was used in predicting the fatigue life. The framework also introduced uncertainties in wind condition and fatigue resistance and used Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the reliability. In the second study, a traffic signal structure was selected for long-term monitoring to study the wind-induced behavior. The wind-induced behavior in regular wind condition was theoretically analyzed and examined by the long-term monitoring data. The monitoring stress data was also used to evaluate if long-term vibrations could cause fatigue damage on the structure. Finally, the present observation was compared with the observation from previous studies to make general conclusions on the wind-induced behavior of traffic signal structures and to provide suggestions on the design of traffic signal structures considering wind-induced fatigue damage. In the third study, the monitoring of the traffic signal structure was continued to capture wind-induced response at higher or extreme wind speeds. Fortunately, the wind-induced response was successfully recorded during a derecho in Iowa. Therefore, the wind-induced response in high and extreme wind conditions was studied through the monitoring data. Also, a data-driven framework was proposed to estimate the fatigue life and reliability of traffic signal structures. Different from the proposed framework in the first study, the proposed framework bypasses the complexity of modeling wind force on the structure and simulating wind-induced response. The proposed framework can be a cost-effective solution since only few sensors are required and can be widely used on other structures suspected of having fatigue damage due to wind-induced vibration. In the fourth study, a methodology was developed to predict the wind-induced response of a traffic signal structure using long-term monitoring data and machine learning techniques. A mathematical model was first derived and optimized to simulate the wind-induced response. Two long short-term memory (LSTM) networks were developed. One LSTM network was trained to replace the mathematical model to faster generate simulated wind-induced response. The other LSTM network was trained to correct the simulated response and generate predictions closer to the monitoring wind-induced response. The LSTM networks were only trained by the monitoring data in regular wind condition but still showed great accuracy when predicting wind-induced response in high and extreme wind conditions. Compared to the traditional approach in predicting wind-induced response, the proposed methodology could be a more cost-effective solution since it only requires few sensors to be installed on the target structure. Furthermore, the trained LSTM network can efficiently generate large amounts of simulation data, which can be powerful in reliability and fragility analysis

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
