Cinematic influence : the significance of Indian cinema on TikTok and in South Asian women's diasporic identity

    No full text
This thesis investigates how TikTok serves as an imaginative space for South Asian women in diaspora to deepen their self-identity, through the consumption of Indian cinema on the platform. I argue that through community spaces that are created on TikTok, South Asian women are able to produce a sense of self, and combat white feminist influences they may have encountered in Western colonial environments. This project centers three films in Indian cinema: Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), and Devdas (2003), and focuses on nine TikToks that were inspired by content curated on my own TikTok feed. I chose these pieces as they are indicative of the films’ fandom and illustrate the role Indian cinema has played for South Asian women in identity formation. This project situates itself in feminist, race, and diasporic studies, and is greatly inspired by the work of Arjun Appadurai, Avtar Brah, bell hooks, and Rafia Zakaria. I employ multimodal discourse analysis throughout this thesis to showcase the layers of media involved when examining a TikTok post, I delve into the meaning behind social media interactions, including the implications of liking, saving, posting, commenting, and sharing. In addition, I utilize this method when investigating the significance of scenes, characters, plot lines, cinematography, and songs in the films being studied. I provide an examination of why the messages in Indian cinema, such as women being complex and dynamic, are significant and differ from representations of South Asian women in Western media. As well, I concentrate on depictions of South Asian men and how Indian cinema allows South Asian women to understand themselves and their sexual desires. I then consider how Indian cinema fandom and content creators develop communities of care, and how user communication on TikTok is indicative of feminist acts themselves.Arts, Faculty ofGender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, Institute forGraduat

The title of the book combines lights and shadows in sexual issues. While the lights allow us to see appearances, shadows conceal many of the incentives that we need to explain in order to reach the truth of what we see. Therefore, and in order to present his wonderful research on sexual issues, the author of this book Dr. Costi Bandali used psychological analysis, in addition to his philosophical, literary and artistic culture

Paid to care: Women’s experiences in non-profit/NGO work in Malaysia

    No full text
In this thesis, I revisit classical and influential feminist texts, mantras and ideologies to analyse the experiences of women working in Malaysian-based women’s organisations: International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW AP), Sisters In Islam and Musawah, all of which are located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I argue that even in difficult times, the women in my study continue to work for others because this is where they find meaning in their professional and personal lives. I examine how they view their feminist activism in an organisational setting and what this means to their greater identities. My ethnographic study contributes to research on women and work, especially in the Southeast Asian context. I identify how women are expected to use caring roles and emotion work typical of the home in these working environments that also promote self-neglect and overwork. While women experience trying moments in these spaces, they continue to work for women’s rights because they are working for a larger cause and this satisfies them. I follow Arlie Russell Hochschild’s emotional labour thesis to explore the merging of home and work, and what this means to the intimate relationships women have to their work. I identify how the idea that ‘work is good’, a common motto in these workplaces, functions in professional and personal contexts. I extend Hochschild’s research to examine how women’s intersecting identities shape why they continue to work in a sector that expects them to give all of themselves. My research provides a gendered reading of non-profit/NGO work focusing on the history of contemporary Malaysian women’s organisations, conflicting feminist identities, how the personal becomes the professional, health implications, funding challenges, and generational tensions in organisations that are rooted in wider feminist debates

Bandali Al-Jawzi's Min Tārīkh Al-Harakāt al-Fikriyyat Fi'l-Islām: The First Marxist Interpretation of Islam

    No full text
Bandali al-Jawzi (1871–1943) has been regaining popularity recently, particularly among his native Palestinians and Muslim nationalists of his adopted home, the Soviet Union. In 1977, for instance, the Union of Palestinian Journalists and Writers, in cooperation with the Oriental Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, commemorated Jawzi as an outstanding Palestinian author. At that time a collection of various of his articles on the Arabic language and history was published in Beirut, as well as an edition of his only book, Min Tārīkh al-Harakāt al-Fikriyyat fi'l-Islām (The History of Intellectual Movements in Islam), first published in 1928. It is this recent exposure which was to take its rightful place in Islamic intellectual history.</jats:p

ABSTRACT Conveying criticism and aspiration to the government is a free thing done by everyone in this era. There are various ways to convey criticism of the social situation. One of them is through literary work. This can happen because literature is presented as a reflection of the social condition of the community. Social problems and events which are experienced, felt and seen by the author give ideas or thought are transferred into his work. According to Swingewood, sociology is a scientific approach that emphasize objective analysis of people in society, about social institution ang social processes. Literature is also related to the society and the desire to make changes to the community. Research questions in this study are 1) What are the sentences which represent social criticism in the song lyric of “A’thuna Ath-Thufuli” by Remi Bandali based on sociology literature theory? 2) What are the causes of the emergence of social criticism in the song lyric of “A’thuna ath-Thufuli” by Remi Bandali based on sociology literature theory?. The type of this study is qualitative research due to this study produces descriptive data. In collecting data, the researcher uses reading technique and taking note techniques. The source of data used by the researcher is the text of the song lyric of “A’thuna ath-Thufuli” by Remi Bandali. On the data analysis, researcher uses Miles and Huberman theory to know social criticism and cause of social criticism in the song lyric of “A’thuna ath-Thufuli” by Remi Bandali based on sociology literature theory. The first result of the study shows sentences that contain social criticisms in the song lyric of “A’thuna ath-Thufuli” by Remi Bandali based on the theory of sociology literature. With details that those social criticisms include a) criticism to government b) criticism to power c) criticism to human rights. The second result of the study shows the cause of the emergence of criticism in the song lyric of “A’thuna ath-Thufuli” by Remi Bandali is due the conflict of Syiria which never ends and causes many victims.

The influence of dietary fat and intestinal pH on calcium bioaccessibility: an in vitro study

    No full text
Human studies measuring true fractional calcium absorption have shown that dietary fat is a significant predictor of calcium absorption. In murine models, dietary fat also increases calcium absorption, but whether there is a differential effect with the type of fatty acid (FA) on intestinal calcium absorption is less clear. Compared to monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs), saturated FAs (SFAs) decrease lipid membrane fluidity and have a greater intestinal transit time, potentially prolonging their interaction with calcium in the gut. In addition, SFAs bind to calcium forming insoluble soaps, increasing fecal fat excretion, and reducing calcium availability for absorption. In addition, luminal factors such as a higher pH in the GI tract could influence calcium absorption such as with certain medications or achlorhydria. The TNO gastrointestinal model (TIM-1) replicates the physiological activities occurring in the lumen of the stomach, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum and is used to study biological events preceding nutrient absorption (i.e., bioaccessibility). In this study, we examined two high fat formulas (SFA or MUFA enriched) compared to low fat and controlled for calcium (500 mg) and other micronutrients during a 5-hr experiment. Calcium bioaccessibility (CaB) was greater for the high compared to low fat test meal in the jejunum (p = 0.001). In addition, CaB with the SFA alone was higher than either LFD or MUFA (p < 0.01). However, there was no interaction between diet and CaB in the ileum or ileal efflux. During high gastrointestinal pH, CaB was similar between diets in the jejunum and ileum, and there was a trend for increasing non-bioaccessible calcium over time (p = 0.058). Furthermore, CaB was 90% (p = 0.003), 91% (p = 0.036), and 94% (p = 0.001) lower in the jejunum, ileum, and ileal efflux, respectively at high pH compared to normal gastrointestinal conditions. These findings suggest a dramatically lower CaB under high pH conditions, having implications for a wide range of patients with gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, the higher Ca absorption associated with a high fat diet found previously, may be partially explained by an increased CaB.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Elhaam Bandal

What is a Good Plan? Cultural Variations in Expert Planners’ Concepts of Plan Quality

    No full text
This article presents the results of a field research study examining commonalities and differences between American and British operational planners’ mental models of planning. We conducted Cultural Network Analysis (CNA) interviews with 14 experienced operational planners in the US and UK. Our results demonstrate the existence of fundamental differences between the way American and British expert planners conceive of a high quality plan. Our results revealed that the American planners’ model focused on specification of action to achieve synchronization, providing little autonomy at the level of execution, and included the belief that increasing contingencies reduces risk. The British planners’ model stressed the internal coherence of the plan, to support shared situational awareness and thereby flexibility at the level of execution. The British model also emphasized the belief that reducing the number of assumptions decreases risk. Overall, the American ideal plan serves a controlling function, whereas the British ideal plan supports an enabling function. Interestingly, both the US and UK would view the other’s ideal plan as riskier than their own. The implications of cultural models of plans and planning are described for establishing performance measures and designing systems to support multinational planning teams
