This study discusses some short stories by Paraguayan Princesa Aquino Augsten. She draws on episodes of violence exerted upon women, as found in journal chronicles, and transform them into literary texts. She constructs a harrowing and poetic map in which girls and young women are victims of family violence, feminicide, and abusive domestic service

The purpose of this chapter is to analyse whether and to what extent gender-based violence against women can be considered as a form of persecution under refugee law. The chapter will start with the silences of international refugee law on migrant women and will comment on the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights on female genital mutilation and domestic violence.

The Death of the Mother Tongue: Language‘s Inadequacy and Body Representation in Chinese-American Writer Yiyun Li
This paper focuses on the violence exerted on the individual by the migration experience, including the kind of violence that is voluntarily self-inflicted and not bound by a tragic necessity or produced by external forces. Psychological and linguistic dislocation may cause wounds as cruel and devastating as the ones physically provoked by migration. Writing and literature become thus powerful instruments or disquieting forms of expiation/reparation for such a displacement. Drawing from recent studies on the complicated relations that bond translation and migration, I will analyse the Chinese-American writer Yiyun Li’s fiction as an example of “self-deterritorialisation”. The language strategy adopted by the writer is revelatory of her way to deal with her own past and personal identity. By closely reading her fiction and her 2017 autobiographical essay, we find out that her refusal of her own mother tongue is rooted in an entangled relationship with her family and homeland, which she translates into the literary description of shattered and humiliated female bodies. Fragile and Powerful: Chinese Migrant Women, Body and Violence in Sheng Keyi's Bei Mei
Since classical literature, going through the manifold depictions of the woman in the 20 th century,
until the more recent ‘body writing’, body and sexuality have been part of Chinese literature. Still
haunted by cultural taboos, sometimes instruments to profess individuality, and not rarely tools in
the service of the publishing industry, they have nevertheless become signs and devices to provide
unexplored visions of subjectivity and modernity. On this trail, literature written by rural–urban
migrant workers, especially women, after the 1980s and 1990s, has offered a new literary platform,
new ideas and new suggestions for representing a female body socially, politically and subjectively
marked: the migrant.
This paper’s aim, through a close reading of the novel Bei mei (Northern Girls) by Sheng Keyi
(2004), taken as a recent case of literary representation of the subaltern and sans-papier migrant
woman, is to analyze the symbolic and metaphoric functions assigned to the body throughout the
narration. In particular, the migrant body may be seen as a manifestation of social inequality in the
(female) migrant’s urban experience, especially in it embodying mercified labor-force (including
sexual labor), being the ‘document’ for its holder to enter urban society, sometimes removed from
the urban space through expulsion or murder. Furthermore, I argue that the novel suggests the
possibility for Chinese working migrant women to express their agency through their body the
‘rape’ by the hegemonic discourse and practice
Medicina y enfermedades en la poética de Francisco de Quevedo y Juan del Valle y Caviedes
One of the most well-known themes in the works of both Quevedo and del Valle y Caviedes is the parody of doctors and their unorthodox methods, which often caused more harm than good to their unfortunate patients. Linked to this theme are various illnesses that are used metaphorically, especially in Quevedo’s moral treatises, beyond their physical and clinical aspects. This study analyses how both authors describe and employ illness throughout their works, considering both its effects on the body and its metaphorical function in moral reflections
Las figuras y los signos de la memoria en Paco Roca
Memory plays a key role in many graphic novels by the eclectic Paco Roca. If in Arrugas memory has been cancelled by Alzheimer, the same topic – this time related to the Civil War – is present in Faro and Juego lúgubre, among others. Its social importance is differently modulated especially in Roca’s most recent works, such as El invierno del dibujante. The novel is a journey through the memory of those Spaniards grown during the Francoist Dictatorship and educated by the comic books published by Bruguera and by reading Los surcos del azar, novela gráfica, the story of a group of young republicans who, forced to leave Spain in 1939, continued their battle against Nazism in France as exiles. Roca’s particular attention for narration in his drawings, sustained by a rich and meticulous investigation, highlights the way he artfully analyzes the historical and social memory in order to provide the present with possible answer
