Measuring the economic landscape of Italy: Target efficiency and control effectiveness
Key industry analysis is traditionally used to evaluate the role, or the impact of a given industry in the economy, through the determination of convenient indices. In assessing the economic impact of a specific industry or a set of industries on an economy, Input-Output analysis has become a popular method. However there are problems in determining and analyzing all the information that can be obtained from this analytical approach. In this paper, we attempt rely on different contributions within the approach to provide a picture for identifying those industries that give a relevant contribution, either direct and indirect, to the output generation. We also propose two new indices extracted from the reduced form of the Leontief model, Leontief inverse, that show the relevance of each industry in determining the target-response of the highest policy control. The industry weights within these structures and their changes can give a picture on how the reaction of the structure changes through time. A comparison with existing methods is performed in an exercise on actual data on the Italian economy over the period of 1995 to 2011 focusing on the inter industry interactions
Estimating the economic impact of tourism industry through the MM approach
Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in Italy and has proven to be a
valuable source of economic prosperity. The main issue emerging when measuring the
impact of tourism is that tourism is usually considered as a specific industry while in most
applied situations it shows traits of a complex and structured economic activity
characterized by a blend of different industries. We will identify the relationship among the
various industries making up the complex economic activity usually referred as the “tourism
industry”. This is done through the application of the multisectoral analysis to the Italian
case. The evaluation of tourism in terms of economic policy is performed through the
definition of an index of interaction among industries
A linear regression approach to evaluate the green supply chain management impact on industrial organizational performance
The increase in the environmental pollution is one of the most important topic in today's world. In this context, the industrial activities can pose a significant threat to the environment. To manage problems associate to industrial activities several methods, techniques and approaches have been developed. Green supply chain management (GSCM) is considered one of the most important âenvironmental management approachâ. In developing countries such as Pakistan the implementation of GSCM practices is still in its initial stages. Lack of knowledge about its effects on economic performance is the reason because of industries fear to implement these practices. The aim of this research is to perceive the effects of GSCM practices on organizational performance in Pakistan. In this research the GSCM practices considered are: internal practices, external practices, investment recovery and eco-design. While, the performance parameters considered are: environmental pollution, operational cost and organizational flexibility. A set of hypothesis propose the effect of each GSCM practice on the performance parameters. Factor analysis and linear regression are used to analyze the survey data of Pakistani industries, in order to authenticate these hypotheses. The findings of this research indicate a decrease in environmental pollution and operational cost with the implementation of GSCM practices, whereas organizational flexibility has not improved for Pakistani industries. These results aim to help managers regarding their decision of implementing GSCM practices in the industrial sector of Pakistan
Carbon and Water Footprint accounts of Italy: A Multi-Region Input-Output approach
This paper analyses the CO2 emissions and the water use embodied in international trade in Italy. It is well documented that consumption of goods places a considerable strain on the environment and this phenomenon is further exacerbated by imports for domestic usage, which entail exploitation of water and environment. In this respect, the analysis focuses on the determination of Italian carbon and water footprints, which are two indicators able to determine how the human activities affect the environment, through the Multiregional and multindustry Input-Output model based on the World-Input-Output Database. The results show that CO2 emissions and water use associated with Italian imports were greater than CO2 emissions and water use associated with Italian export, mainly because the exploitation of resources in Italy is higher in the consumption phase than in production processes
Identifying the critical factors of green supply chain management: Environmental benefits in Pakistan
Pakistan is a developing country characterized by a growing industrialization, which is the major cause of environmental pollution in the country. To control the significant increase in pollution a green incentive has started, aiming to moderate the adverse effects of environmental pollution. Thus, Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) plays an important role in influencing the total environment impact of any organizations. This study considers ten Pakistani industries that have implemented GSCM practices. The Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory technique (DEMATEL) is used to find influential factors in selecting GSCM criteria. The results show that organizational involvement is the most important dimension useful to implement GSCM practices. In addition, commitment from senior managers, ISO 14000 certification of suppliers and recycle of waste heat are considered significant factors. The paper also signifies the casual relationship among the dimensions and the factors in the form of diagraphs. The main management implication of the paper is to help decision makers to focus on the critical dimensions/factors in order to implement the GSCM practices more effectively in Pakistan
Risk assessment of China-Pakistan Fiber Optic Project (CPFOP) in the light of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM)
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is considered as an excellent breakthrough for improving the economic and security situation in the region. The estimated worth of CPEC is 62$ billion which is comprising of 49 developmental projects. China-Pakistan Fiber Optic Project (CPFOP) is one of the core projects among these, which will deliver safe route of voice traffic between both countries. CPFOP is greatly beneficial in terms of enhanced security and revenue generation. Currently, Pakistan's international connectivity is via submarine cables. CPFOP will provide an alternative route for international telecom traffic and also assist in achieving the rapidly growing internet traffic demand in Pakistan. It is estimated that 17 million people will get benefit from this project. However, every project has some undesirable impacts. The aim of this research paper is twofold; 1st to trace out the pros and cons of CPFOP. 2ndly, performing a risk assessment of CPFOP by using Fuzzy VIKOR technique. This approach will help in prioritizing a list of failure modes of Fiber Optic Cable (FOC). Lastly, this paper will help authorities for optimizing and safeguarding national interest in the wake of CPFOP
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
