Factors influencing development of management strategies for the Abou Ali River in Lebanon. I: Spatial variation and land use
Surface water bodies are progressively subject to increasing stress as a result of environmentally degrading processes primarily related to anthropogenic activities. This study assesses and examines the impact of land use and anthropogenic activities on the spatial variation in water quality of the Abou Ali River in North Lebanon. It is the first detailed study of its kind in Lebanon and adds to the existing Knowledge by shedding light on a relatively small Mediterranean river in a developing country where there is a paucity of such studies. The assessment was conducted at the end of the dry season in 2002 and 2003 and the end of the wet season in 2003 and 2004. The study has demonstrated the importance of anthropogenic influences on the water quality of the Abou Ali River Basin, as concentrations of most contaminants were higher at locations with greatest human activity. The most adversely affected area was the section of the river that flows through an entirely urbanized and highly populated region, the Tripoli conurbation. Upstream rural sites were enriched by contaminants primarily from non-point sources such as agricultural runoff and poultry litter whereas contaminant concentrations at the urban sites were enriched by a combination of sewage discharge and flow of contaminants from upstream. If the Abou Ali River is to be utilized as a managed water resource and its water quality sustained, point source discharges will require treatment and land use management must be planned to minimize the impact of diffuse source pollution on the river. A high priority should be given to the implementation and enforcement of the precautionary and polluter pays principles. Moreover, an effective legal, economic and institutional framework is required to encourage investment in waste reduction and control and to introduce environmentally sound practices

Ali Yaşar Sarıbay was searched in this study. He is one of the most important social scientist in contemporary Turkey. A critical literature review accomplished on the first stage. Following this, a rather detailed interview schedule with mostly open-ended (unstructured) questions were prepared. And than, a very successful and productive face to face interview was realised with the author.Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’nin en önemli yaşayan siyaset sosyologlarından biri olan Ali Yaşar Sarıbay konu edildi. Yaşayan bilim - düşün insanlarını konu edinen araştırmanın zorlukları bu alanda çalışan herkesçe bilinir. Araştırmada, bu zorlukların yaratabileceği sorunları en aza indirgeyebilmek için analitik bir bakış açısından ziyade betimleyici bir tutum tercih edildi.Bu amaç doğrultusunda önce hem elektronik hem de matbu ortamlarda geniş bir literatür taraması yapıldı. Ardından Prof. Dr. Ali Yaşar Sarıbay’ın, ulaşılabilen bütün eserleri okundu. Derlenen bilgilerden yola çıkılarak oldukça ayrıntılı bir görüşme kılavuzu hazırlandı. Bunları müteakiben Ali Yaşar Sarıbay Hoca ile yüz yüze, saatler süren bir mülakat gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmanın temel veri kaynağını bu görüşmede elde edilen bilgiler oluşturdu
Multi-channel customer management: A case study in Egypt
Channel management is one CRM systems component much influenced by the behaviour of customers in relation to the implementation and use of channel management CRM component. The consumers’ behaviours, preferences, perceptions and expectations are crucial for the implementation and use of channel management. Customers’ contact with the organization’s multi-channels can occur at several touch points through out customer lifecycle. Customers’ behaviours may be differentiated according to the individual or micro level, but it might also differ at an ecological or macro level of analysis (Ramaseshan et al., 2006). In this paper the author has conducted a case study in Egypt to analyze customers’ behaviours at a macro level and customers channel choices, through out the customer lifecycle. The author has used a Structurational Analysis model (Ali and Brooks, 2008) to identify the cultural factors (Ali, et al. 2008) that influence the multi-channel customer management in Egypt
Abdullah Salahaddîn-i Uşşâkî’nin Hz. Ali Dîvânı Tercümesi
Hz. Ali, İslâm dünyasında Hz. Muhammed’e yakınlığı ve siyasi kişiliği sebebiyle özel bir konuma sahiptir. Bu sebeple onun güzel sözleri, hutbeleri ve şiirleri kayıt altına alınmış ve günümüze kadar ulaşmıştır. Arap, Fars edebiyatlarında geniş yer bulmuş olan vecize, nasihat, hutbe, mektup, emirnâme, şiir vb. Hz. Ali’ye atfedilen edebî miras, Türk edebiyatında da hatırı sayılır bir ilgiye mazhar olmuştur. Bununla birlikte Hz. Ali Dîvânı Arapçadan Türkçeye geç dönemlerde tercüme edildiği görülmektedir. Dîvânın tespit edilebilen en eski Türkçe tercümesi, XVIII. asrın velûd şair ve yazarı, “Salâhî” mahlasını kullanan Abdullah Selâhaddîn-i Uşşâkî (ö. 1197/1782)’ye aittir. Salâhî Hz. Ali Dîvânı’nı nazmen tercüme etmiştir. Pek çok manzum eseri bulunan Salâhî’nin bu çevirisiyle Hz. Ali Dîvânı, Türk edebiyatına kazandırılmıştır. Çağdaşı olan Müstakimzâde Süleyman Saadettin Efendi (ö. 1202/1787), Salâhî’nin tercümesini kendi tabiriyle “terbiye” ederek yeni bir çeviri oluşturmuş ve bu çeviri üzerinden Hz. Ali Dîvânı’nı şerh etmiştir. Müstakimzâde’nin tercümesi şerhli olmasından dolayı çok meşhur olmuştur. Eski harflerle iki defa basılmıştır. Salâhî çevirisi ise Müstakimzâde’ye ve dolayısıyla diğer mütercimlere örnek teşkil etmesine rağmen yeterince tanınmamıştır. Bu çalışma, Selâhaddîn-i Uşşakî’nin çevirisinin tenkitli metnini günümüz harfleriyle yayımlayarak hak ettiği ilgiye akademik bir katkı sağlamayı hedeflemektedir
Targeting the protein-protein interactions of the HIV lifecycle
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), relies heavily on protein-protein interactions in almost every step of its lifecycle. Targeting these interactions, especially those between virus and host proteins, is increasingly viewed as an ideal avenue for the design and development of new therapeutics. In this tutorial review, we outline the lifecycle of HIV and describe some of the protein-protein interactions that control and regulate each step of this process, also detailing efforts to develop therapies that target these interactions
Biophysical studies of a transmembrane peptide derived from the T cell antigen receptor
Core peptide (CP) is a unique peptide derived from the transmembrane sequence of T cell antigen receptor (TCR)-alpha chain and is capable of inhibiting the immune response both invitro and in animal models of T cell mediated inflammation. The structure of CP, with sequence GLRILLLKV, is similar to the amphipathic region of many peptides. Unlike antimicrobial peptides, however, which damage cell membranes, electron microscopy and propidium iodide exclusion assays on cell membranes suggest that CP does not create pores and may act by interfering with signal transduction at the membrane level. To investigate this effect further we report the results of31P and2H solid-state NMR spectroscopy of CP on model membranes. As predicted, even at high concentrations of CP, the structure of model membranes was not significantly perturbed. Only at the very high peptide-to-lipid molar ratio of 1?10 significant effects on the model membranes were observed. We conclude that CP does not destroy the integrity of the lipid bilayer
Settling of finite-size particles in isotropically forced, homogeneous turbulence: interface-resolved simulations
We have simulated the gravity-induced settling of finite-size particles in a turbulent background flow which is forced in a statistically-stationary fashion. The simulations are accurately resolving the solid-fluid interface with the aid of an immersed boundary technique [1]. The parameters of the simulation are (apart from background turbulence) identical to those of reference [2], where particle clustering was observed at a Galileo number of 178 and a solid volume fraction of 0.005. In the present case, it is found that a relative turbulence intensity of 0.24 leads to the disappearance of the clusters; as a consequence, the increase in average particle settling velocity found in [2] also vanishes. Mesophilic-hydrothermal-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion of green corn straw
Mesophilic-hydrothermal (80-160 degrees C, 30 min)-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion and control tests of mesophilic (M), thermophilic (T), hydrothermal-mesophilic (H-M), and mesophilic-thermophilic digestion (M-T) of green corn straw were conducted for a 20-day fermentation period. The results indicate that M-H-T is an efficient method to improve methane production. A maximum methane yield of 371.74 mL/g volatile solid was obtained by the M (3 days)-H (140 degrees C)-T (17 days) process, which was 20.44%, 16.55%, 31.44%, and 14.31% higher than the yields of the M, T, 140-M, and M-T processes. The enhanced methane production was attributed to (1) the improved hemicellulose degradation and lignin disorganization; (2) prevention of the degradation of soluble sugar, easily hydrolyzed hemicellulose and cellulose into furfural and methylfurfural; and (3) lack of formation of Maillard reaction products during initial hydrothermal treatment.
