Efficient recovery of copper from a copper converter dust via thin layer leaching and solvent extraction

    No full text
The production of flue dusts is inherent in copper pyrometallurgy. These flue dusts are originated in the three types of furnaces used: flash, reverberatory and converters, and all have the same characteristics: a high content of copper accompanying with a miriade of other elements. This is because these dusts can be considered profitables (copper) and hazardous (arsenic, etc.), the above together with the non desirable option of their recycling to the corresponding furnace, make of a necessity their treatment prior to their eventual dumping. The present investigation deals with the treatment of one of these dusts, a converter dust, via hydrometallurgical treatment. The high copper content of the starting material (74 % copper in which 30% is metallic copper), makes any conventional leaching unusable, thus, an advanced option like thin layer leaching of the dust with nitric acid, followed by dissolution in water, leads to a pure copper solution. However, the purity and copper concentration in the solution can be increased via solvent extraction, and a counter-current circuit using Acorga PT5050 dissolved in a kerosene diluent as extractant phase has been proved during 80 hours. The results indicated that a net copper gain of near 12 g/L copper is achieved and the exiting aqueous solution can feed a copper electrowinning plant

En: 1st Spanish National Conference on Advances in Materials Recycling and Eco – Energy Madrid, 12-13 November 2009.-- Editors: F. A. López, F. Puertas, F. J. Alguacil and A. Guerrero.-- 4 pages, 4 figures.Boehmite was synthesized by a low temperature hydrothermal procedure, via sol-gel, from an aluminium hazardous waste (AHW). The method consisted of a first stage of acid digestion to solubilize the metal content, and a second stage of gel precipitation in alkaline medium. Several experiments were performed to study the effect of concentration, time and pH not only on the recovery of aluminium but on the purity of boehmite. A nanocrystalline boehmite was obtained as unique phase at pH8. At pH9 boehmite is obtained along with norstrandite. The complete characterization of samples was carried out by XRD, MEB, and TG/DTA. The procedure allows the recovery of 90% of the soluble aluminium content in the waste. The authors thank the MEC for the financial support (Project CTM2005-01964) and the company Recuperaciones y Reciclajes Roman S.L. (Fuenlabrada, Madrid, Spain) for supplying AHW. Laura Gonzalo-Delgado is grateful to the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) for her I3P contract.Peer reviewe

4 pages, 1 figure, 1 table.-- En: 1st Spanish National Conference on Advances in Materials Recycling and Eco – Energy Madrid, 12-13 November 2009.-- Editors: F. A. López, F. Puertas, F. J. Alguacil and A. Guerrero. The present study analyses the hazardous waste management by citizens via Fixed Recycling (FRC) and Mobile Centres (MRC) with the aim of suggesting improvements of both services. In addition, the effectiveness of a campaign for environmental education developed by the Madrid council was assessed. A questionnaire was carried out on a sample of 5644 inhabitants of four different districts of Madrid City. Data were treated quantitatively using SPSS 17.0 and categorized using content analysis. It was found that the campaign effectively promoted the existence and use of Recycling Centres and was able to identify possible amendments to improve future campaigns. We acknowledge main support of Environmental Education Group in last years.Peer reviewe
