Numerical and experimental analysis of the flow field within a lean NO x trap for diesel engines
The present study aims at analyzing the flow field within a Lean NO x Trap (LNT). To this purpose a twofold approach based on the synergic use of numerical and non-intrusive experimental techniques was adopted. The measurements were carried out at a steady flow rig in terms of global performances and local velocity measurements. In particular, mass flow rates and pressure drops were used to define the global fluid dynamic efficiency of the system, while the Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) technique was employed to determine the flow field within the aftertreatment apparatus. At the same time, a finite volume CFD code was adopted for the numerical analysis. The comparison between experimental and numerical data displayed a good agreement in terms of global and local quantities. Specifically, the numerical code well-reproduced the main structure within the emission control system. Furthermore, the analysis showed the influence of the trap on the flow field and the pressure drop distribution through the aftertreatment device. Copyright © 2011 SAE International
Experimental Investigation and RSM Modeling of the Effects of Injection Timing on the Performance and NOx Emissions of a Micro-Cogeneration Unit Fueled with Biodiesel Blends
The (partial or total) substitution of petro-diesel with biodiesel in internal combustion engines (ICEs) could represent a crucial path towards the decarbonization of the energy sector. However, critical aspects are related to the controversial issue of the possible increase in Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions. In such a framework, the proposed study aims at investigating the effects of biodiesel share and injection timing on the performance and NOx emissions of a diesel micro combined heat and power (CHP) system. An experimental campaign has been conducted considering the following operating conditions: (i) a reference standard injection timing (17.2° BTDC), an early injection timing (20.8° BTDC), and a late injection timing (12.2° BTDC); (ii) low (0.90 kW), partial (2.45 kW), and full (3.90 kW) output power load; and (iii) four fuel blends with different biodiesel (B) shares (B0, B15, B30, and B100). Experimental data were also elaborated on thanks to the response surface modelling (RSM) technique, aiming at (i) quantifying the influences of the above-listed variables and their trends on the responses, and (ii) obtaining a set of predictive numerical models that represent the basis for model-based design and optimization procedures. The results show: (i) an overall improvement of the engine performance due to the biodiesel presence in the fuel blend —in particular, B30 and B100 blends have shown peak values in both electrical (29%) and thermal efficiency (42%); (ii) the effective benefits of late SOI strategies on NOx emissions, quantified in an overall average NOx reduction of 27% for the early-to-late injection, and of 16% for the standard-to-late injection strategy. Moreover, it has emerged that the NOx-reduction capabilities of the late injection strategy decrease with higher biodiesel substitution rates; through the discussion of high-prediction-capable, parametric, data-driven models, an extensive RSM analysis has shown how the biodiesel share promotes an increase of NOx whenever it overcomes a calculated threshold that is proportional to the engine load (from about 66.5% to 85.7% of the biodiesel share)
Fluid dynamic investigation of innovative intake strategies for multivalve internal combustion engines
The aim of the paper is to investigate the influence of novel opening strategies for intake valves on the permeability and in-cylinder flow of a multivalve spark-ignition internal combustion engine. Specifically, the deactivation of an intake valve and asymmetric valves lifts are analysed and compared to the standard symmetric valves opening. To this purpose, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis is performed by using a finite volume code and an experimental activity is done at a steady flow rig. The investigation is carried out for different intake strategies and engine load conditions and the comparison between CFD and experimental flow coefficients shows a good agreement. The results demonstrate that the proper combination of different valves strategies permits the effect of the throttling process at medium and low engine load to be minimised, improving the breathability of the intake system, and creating more organised and energised mean flow structures within the combustion chamber
Numerical and experimental analysis of the intake flow in a high performance four-stroke motorcycle engine: Influence of the two-equation turbulence models
An experimental and numerical analysis of the intake system of a production high performance four-stroke motorcycle engine was carried out. The aim of the work was to characterize the fluid dynamic behavior of the engine during the intake phase and to evaluate the capability of the most commonly used two-equation turbulence models to reproduce the in-cylinder flow field for a very complex engine head. Pressure and mass flow rates were measured on a steady-flow rig. Furthermore, velocity measurements were obtained within the combustion chamber using laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). The experimental data were compared to the numerical results using four two-equation turbulence models (standard κ-ε realizable κ-ε, Wilcox κ-ω, and SST κ-ω models). All the investigated turbulence models well predicted the global performances of the intake system and the mean flow structure inside the cylinder Some differences between measurements and computations were found close to the cylinder head while an improving agreement was evident moving away from the engine head. Furthermore, the Wilcox k-ω model permitted the flow field inside the combustion chamber of the engine to be reproduced and the overall angular momentum of the flux with respect to the cylinder axis to be quantified more properly. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
