Construction Of Measurement Instruments In The Area Of Health [construção De Instrumentos De Medida Na área Da Saúde]
Measurement instruments are an integral part of clinical practice, health evaluation and research. These instruments are only useful and able to present scientifically robust results when they are developed properly and have appropriate psychometric properties. Despite the significant increase of rating scales, the literature suggests that many of them have not been adequately developed and validated. The scope of this study was to conduct a narrative review on the process of developing new measurement instruments and to present some tools which can be used in some stages of the development process. The steps described were: I-The establishment of a conceptual framework, and the definition of the objectives of the instrument and the population involved; II-Development of the items and of the response scales; III-Selection and organization of the items and structuring of the instrument; IV-Content validity, V-Pre-test. This study also included a brief discussion on the evaluation of the psychometric properties due to their importance for the instruments to be accepted and acknowledged in both scientific and clinical environments.203925936Cano, S.J., Hobart, J.C., The problem with health measurement (2011) Patient Prefer Adherence, 5, pp. 279-290Marx, R.G., Bombardier, C., Hogg-Johnson, S., Wright, J.G., Clinimetric and psychometric strategies for development of a health measurement scale (1999) J Clin Epidemiol, 5 (2), pp. 105-111Keszei, A., Novak, M., Streiner, D.L., Introduction to health measurement scales (2010) J Psychosom Res, 68 (4), pp. 319-323Rattray, J., Jones, M.C., Essential elements of questionnaire design and development (2007) J Clin Nurs, 16 (2), pp. 234-243Gallasch, C.H., Alexandre, N.M.C., Amick, B., III, Cross-cultural adaptation, Reliability, and validity of the Work Role Functioning Questionnaire to Brazilian Portuguese (2007) J Occup Rehabil, 17 (4), pp. 701-711Vigatto, R., Alexandre, N.M.C., Correa Filho, H.R., Development of a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Oswestry Disability Index. The Pain Disability Questionnaire: A Reliability And Validity Study [the Pain Disability Questionnaire: Um Estudo De Confiabilidade E Validade]
The goal of this study was to translate and adapt The Pain Disability Questionnaire (PDQ) to Brazilian Portuguese, as well as to assess its psychometric properties and practicability. The following methodological steps were followed: translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert committee assessment and pre-test. The psychometric properties were assessed through the application of a questionnaire to 119 patients with chronic musculoskeletal disorders. The results indicated the reliability of the instrument, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.86, and high stability in the test-retest. A moderate correlation was found between the PDQ scores and the numerical pain scale. Negative correlations were found between the Spitzer Quality of Life Index and the functional condition, psychosocial component and total PDQ score. Construct validity demonstrated significant difference in PDQ scores between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. The PDQ revealed fast application and easy understanding. The results indicated a successful cultural adaptation and reliable psychometric properties.2017683Bergman, S., Public health perspective- how to improve the musculoskeletal health of the opulation (2007) Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol, 1 (21), pp. 191-207Andersen, C.H., Haahr, J.P., Frost, P., Risk factors for more severe regional musculoskeletal ymptoms: A two-year prospective study of a general working population (2007) Arthritis Rheum, 56 (4), pp. 1255-1364Ricci, J.A., Stewart, W.F., Chee, E., Leotta, C., Foley, K., Hochberg, M.C., Back pain exacerbations and lost productive time costs in United States workers (2006) Spine, 31 (26), pp. 3052-3060Anagnostis, C., Gatchel, R.J., Mayer, T.G., The pain disability questionnaire: A new psychometrically sound measure for chronic musculoskeletal disorders (2004) Spine, 29 (20), pp. 2290-2302Alexandre, N.M.C., Guirardello, E.B., Adaptación cultural de instrumentos utilizados em salud ocupacional (2002) Rev Panam Salud Publica, 11 (2), pp. 109-111Beaton, D., Bombardier, C., Guillemin, F., Ferraz, M.B., Recommendations for the process of cross-cultural adaptation of self-report measures (2000) Spine, 25 (24), pp. 3186-3191Alexandre, N.M.C., Coluci, M.Z.O., Validade de conteúdo nos processos de construção e adaptação de instrumentos de medida (2011) Cienc Saúde Coletiva, 16 (7), pp. 12-22Nordin, M., Alexandre, N.M.C., Campelo, M., Measures for low back pain: A proposal for clinical use (2003) Rev. Cross-cultural Adaptation Of An Instrument To Measure Work-related Activities That May Contribute To Osteomuscular Symptoms [adaptação Cultural De Instrument Que Avalia Atividades Do Trabalho E Sua Relação Com Sintomas Osteomusculares]
Objective: To translate the Work-Related Activities Questionnaire into Brazilian Portuguese and to evaluate its cross-cultural adaptation among a sample of Brazilian workers. Methods: International standard recommendations were followed to translate and back-translate the instrument, and to establish the cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument using content experts and pretest. A field testing of the instrument was conducted with 40 Brazilian workers. Results: The procedure used to establish the cross-cultural adaptation of the instrument was found to be adequate. The panels of experts evaluated the initial content validity of the items of the instrument and suggested necessary revisions to achieve an acceptable content validity. In the pretest, 7.5% of individuals suggested changes in one of the items of the instrument. In addition, 17.5% of the individuals reported having difficulty understanding the instructions to complete the instrument. These findings led to further revision of the instrument. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the instrument was adequately cross-culturally adapted and validated.222149154Punnett, L., Wegman, D.H., Work-related musculoskeletal disorders: The epidemiologic evidence and the debate (2004) J Electromyogr Kinesiol, 14 (1), pp. 13-23Waters, T.R., National efforts to identify research issues related to prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (2004) J Electromyogr Kinesiol, 14 (1), pp. 7-12Bot, S.D., Terwee, C.B., Van Der Windt, D.A., Feleus, A., Bierma-Zeinstra, S.M., Knol, D.L., Internal consistency and validity of a new physical workload questionnaire (2004) Accup Environ Med, 61 (12), pp. 980-986Brasil. Job Factors Related To Musculoskeletal Symptoms Among Nursing Personnel - A Review
The study aimed to conduct a literature review as a step of the development of a new questionnaire about the nursing workers' perception of job factors that may lead to musculoskeletal symptoms. An information synthesis was achieved by collecting data from studies that fitted the search criteria. The results showed that despite the existence of several job factors related to musculoskeletal symptoms, no specific questionnaire that evaluates this relationship was found. Therefore, this literature review presents important topics for developing the first questionnaire to analyze work activities that may contribute to pain and discomfort among nursing personnel. © 2012 - IOS Press and the authors. Cultural Adaptation To Brazil And Psychometric Performance Of The "evidence-based Practice Questionnaire" [adaptação Cultural Para O Brasil E Desempenho Psicométrico Do "evidence-based Practice Questionnaire"]
Objective: To culturally adapt the instrument "Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire" (EBPQ) to the Portuguese language and assess its psychometric qualities. Methods: The steps of cultural adaptation of measurement instruments were followed. Reliability was verified through internal consistency, stability by test-retest, and construct validity by the contrasted groups approach. Results: High Cronbach's alpha (0.91 to 0.68) and satisfactory Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (0.90) were obtained in all domains. In assessing construct validity, significant differences were found between groups of nurses with different backgrounds. Conclusion: The steps of cultural adaptation of measurement instruments have been successfully completed. The Brazilian version obtained presents reliable psychometric properties for its use in this population.275405411Evidence-based medicine: A new approach to teaching the practice of medicine (1992) JAMA, 268 (17), pp. 2420-2425Hoffmann, T., Bennett, S., Del Mar, C., Evidence-based practice across the health professions (2010) Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice, pp. 16-37. , Australia: ElsevierEstabrooks, C.A., Will evidence-based nursing practice make practice perfect? The Perception Of Behavior Related To Mindfulness And The Brazilian Version Of The Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory [a Percepção De Comportamentos Relacionados à Atenção Plena E A Versão Brasileira Do Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory]
Mindfulness is a practice and a form of consciousness which has been the basis for innovative interventions in care and health promotion. This study presents mindfulness, describes and discusses the process of cultural adaptation of The Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI) to Brazilian Portuguese. From the original version of this pioneering instrument for assessing mindfulness two translations and two back-translations were made. These were evaluated by a committee of 14 experts (Buddhists, linguists, health professionals), who helped to create two versions for the first pre-test, based on which suggestions were made by a sample of 41 people of the population through interviews. Considering the difficulties in understanding the concepts that are unfamiliar to the Brazilian culture, a new version was prepared with additional explanations, which underwent a further evaluation of the experts and a second pre-test with 72 people. This process aimed at addressing the limitations and challenges of evaluating mindfulness in a country of western culture through a self-report instrument based on Buddhist psychology. With appropriate levels of clarity and equivalence with the original instrument, the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory adapted for Brazil is presented.19938993914Grossman, P., Dam, N.T.V., Mindfulness, by any other name: Trials and tribulations of sati in western psychology and science (2011) Contemp Budd, 12 (1), pp. 219-239Gunaratana, B.H., (1992) Mindfulness In Plain English, , Boston: WisdomKabat-Zinn, J., Mindfulness-based interventions in context: Past, present, and future (2003) Clin Psychol Sci Prac, 10 (2), pp. 144-156Brown, K.W., Ryan, R.M., Creswell, J.D., Mindfulness: Theoretical foundations and evidence for its salutary effects (2007) Psychol Inq, 18 (4), pp. 211-237Bishop, S.R., Lau, M., Shapiro, S., Carlson, L., Anderson, N.D., Carmody, J., Segal, Z.V., Devins, G., Mindfulness: A proposed operational definition (2003) Clin Psychol Sci Prac, 11 (3), pp. 230-241Eberth, J., Sedlmeier, P., The Effects of Mindfulness Meditation: A Meta-Analysis (2012) Mindfulness, 3 (3), pp. 174-189Grossman, P., Mindfulness for Psychologists: Paying Kind Attention to the Perceptible (2010) Mindfulness, 1 (2), pp. 87-97Vandenberghe, L., Assunção, A.B., Concepções de mindfulness em langer e Kabat-Zinn: Um encontro da ciên- cia ocidental com a espiritualidade oriental (2009) Contextos Clínic, 2 (2), pp. 124-135Cullen, M., Mindfulness-Based Interventions: An Emerging Phenomenon (2011) Mindfulness, 2 (3), pp. 186-193Kabat-Zinn, J., Some reflections on the origins of MBSR, skillfull means, and the trouble with maps (2011) Contemp Budd, 12 (1), pp. 282-306Kabat-Zinn, J., An out-patient program in Behavioral Medicine for chronic pain patients based on the practice of mindfulness meditation (1982) Theoretical Considerations and Preliminary Results. Translation And Adaptation Of The "diabetes Distress Scale - Dds" In Brazilian Culture [tradução E Adaptação Do "diabetes Distress Scale - Dds" Na Cultura Brasileira]
OBJECTIVE: To translate and adapt the Diabetes Distress Scale for the Brazilian culture. METHODS: The process followed international standards for adaptation of an instrument: translation, back translation and evaluation by a panel of judges, and pretest. RESULTS: The stages of translation and back translation were performed successfully, and the evaluation of the synthesis version by the expert panel resulted in modification of items, ensuring the equivalence between the original and translated versions. During the pretest, there were reformulations of some items, making them clearer and easier to understand. CONCLUSION: The Brazilian version of the Diabetes Distress Scale received satisfactory results with respect to the process of translation and cultural adaptation.255Moreira, R.O., Papelbaum, M., Appolinario, J.C., Matos, A.G., Coutinho, W.F., Meirelles, R.M., Diabetes mellitus and depression: A systematic review (2003) Arq Bras Endocrinol Metab, 47 (1), pp. 19-29Lustman, P.J., Anderson, R.J., Freedland, K.E., De Groot, M., Carney, R.M., Clouse, R.E., Depression and poor glycemic control: A meta-analytic review of the literature (2000) Diabetes Care, 23 (7), pp. 934-942Gonzalez, J.S., Safren, S.A., Cagliero, E., Wexler, D.J., Delahanty, L., Wittenberg, E., Depression, self-care, and medication adherence in type 2 diabetes: Relationships across the full range of symptom severity (2007) Diabetes Care, 30 (9), pp. 2222-2227Fisher, L., Mullan, J.T., Skaff, M.M., Glasgow, R.E., Arean, P., Hessler, D., Predicting diabetes distress in patients with type 2 diabetes: A longitudinal study (2009) Diabet Med, 26 (6), pp. 622-627Herschbach, P., Berg, P., Dankert, A., Duran, G., Engst-Hastreiter, U., Waadt, S., Fear of progression in chronic diseases: Psychometric properties of the fear of progression questionnaire (2005) J Psychosom Res, 58 (6), pp. 505-511Wexler, D.J., Grant, R.W., Wittenberg, E., Bosch, J.L., Cagliero, E., Delahanty, L., Correlates of health-related quality of life in type 2 diabetes (2006) Diabetologia, 49 (7), pp. 1489-1497Fisher, L., Glasgow, R.E., Mullan, J.T., Skaff, M.M., Polonsky, W.H., Development of a brief diabetes distress screening instrument (2008) Ann Fam Med, 6 (3), pp. 246-252Ting, R.Z., Nan, H., Yu, M.W., Kong, A.P., Ma, R.C., Wong, R.Y., Diabetes-related distress and physical and psychological health in chinese type 2 diabetic patients (2011) Diabetes Care, 34 (5), pp. 1094-1096Graue, M., Haugstvedt, A., Wentzel-Larsen, T., Iversen, M.M., Karlsen, B., Rokne, B., Diabetesrelated emotional distress in adults: Reliability and validity of the norwegian versions of the problem areas in diabetes scale (paid) and the diabetes distress scale (dds) (2012) Int J Nurs Stud, 49 (2), pp. 174-182Fisher, L., Glasgow, R.E., Strycker, L.A., The relationship between diabetes distress and clinical depression with glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes (2010) Diabetes Care, 33 (5), pp. 1034-1036Fisher, L., Mullan, J.T., Arean, P., Glasgow, R.E., Hessler, D., Masharani, U., Diabetes distress but not clinical depression or depressive symptoms is associated with glycemic control in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses (2010) Diabetes Care, 33 (1), pp. 23-28Polonsky, W.H., Fisher, L., Earles, J., Dudl, R.J., Lees, J., Mullan, J., Assessing psychosocial distress in diabetes: Development of the diabetes distress scale (2005) Diabetes Care, 28 (3), pp. 626-631Curcio, R., Lima, M.H., Alexandre, N.M., Diabetes mellitus related tools adapted and validated to Brazilian culture (2011) Rev Eletronica Enferm, 13 (2), pp. 331-337Global Guideline for Type 2 Diabetes: Recommendations for standard, comprehensive, and minimal care (2006) Diabet. Air quality in the periphery of operating rooms during surgery
Ultra-clean ventilation systems are used in the operating room (OR) to reduce the quantity of airborne bacteria in the ultra-clean area, and reduce the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs). When the number of colony-forming units (CFUs) in the ultra-clean (protected) area is too high, this is considered a risk factor for SSIs.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Environmental & Climate DesignMedical Instruments & Bio-Inspired Technolog
