JAN FILIPOWICZ, A PRINTER AND ENGRAVER FROM LVOV, IN THE LIGHT OF ARCHIVE DOCUMENTSThe article reveals new facts from the life of the graphic artist and printer Jan Filipowicz, who in 1757–1766 ran a company comprising printing and engraving houses and a bookshop. Despite the fact that Filipowicz was a popular book illustrator in the eastern part of Poland, so far we have had very little information about his professional activities and private life. Drawing on documents from the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv Центральний Державний Історичний Архів Украіни у Львові — Filipowicz’s will and two posthumously compiled versions of his property inventory — and of the basis of contemporary Polish and Ukrainian literature, the author has managed to establish and put in order many facts concerning the life of the typographer and the operation of his company.JAN FILIPOWICZ, A PRINTER AND ENGRAVER FROM LVOV, IN THE LIGHT OF ARCHIVE DOCUMENTSThe article reveals new facts from the life of the graphic artist and printer Jan Filipowicz, who in 1757–1766 ran a company comprising printing and engraving houses and a bookshop. Into the absurd: Filipowicz - Camus

    No full text
Based on selected works by Kornel Filipowicz, the article presents the writer’s reflection on the absurdity of the world in relation to Albert Camus’s literary and philosophical concept. The article has been divided into ve entitled parts, of which the rst one is an introduction to the article, and the last one is its conclusion. In Disintegration of the World two short stories by Filipowicz are presented, in which the theme of absurdity appears. According to the article’s author, they can refer to the idea of absurdity by Albert Camus. The part: Mapping the absurd uses the examples of Camus’s essays and Filipowicz’s stories to outline the ontic status of the absurd that both writers give. The next subsection, Two Sides of the Same, juxtaposes the reflections contained in one of Filipowicz’s short stories and Camus’s early parable, directing attention to both thinkers’ understanding of the idea of the absurd. In the Blind Men, the context of Pieter Bruegel’s painting „The Blind Leading the Blind” additionally appears in order to emphasise Filipowicz’s reflection on the existence of two opposing epiphanies in the world at the same time – absurdity and sense. The article closes Doxographical landscape with absurdity in the background. According to the author’s findings, the absurd in Filipowicz’s work appears in the doxographical impressions of his characters and is an expression of the subjectivity of human experience

Artykuł przedstawia zarys biografii Tytusa Filipowicza (1878-1953) – jednego z wybitnych działaczy niepodległościowych, dyplomatów i polityków. The article presents an outline of the biography of Tytus Filipowicz (1878-1953), one of the outstanding independence activists, diplomats and politicians. The work discusses the most important episodes in Filipowicz‘s life from his youth until 1939, when he had to leave his homeland forever as a result of an invasion by German and Soviet troops. The article successively describes his socialist activity in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie, his emigration to Great Britain, his activity within the Polish Socialist Party, and his extremely important trip with Józef Piłsudski to Japan in 1904. The author highlights the political action carried out by Filipowicz during World War I and his presence in the structures of the Military Department of the Supreme National Committee, the Polish Legions, and then his cooperation with the Temporary State Council and the Regency Council. A special moment in the life of the hero was the countersigning, together with Józef Piłsudski, of a dispatch notifying the creation of an independent Polish state. In the interwar period, Tytus Filipowicz served as the head of the Polish Special Mission to the Southern Caucasus, and was an envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland in Moscow (1921), Finland (1922-1927), Belgium (1927-1929) and Washington (1929-1933). After his retirement, Filipowicz took part in the political life of the Second Republic of Poland and in 1937 he joined the Democratic Party. Not included in this short study is the last period of his life that Tytus Filipowicz spent in exile in France (1939-1940) and Great Britain (1940-1953), where he was an active participant in the life of exile, a member of the 1st and 4th National Council, as well as chairman of the 3rd National Council

Host/otherness of post-humanist discourse. A review of the book entitled „(Prze)zwierzęcenia. Poetyckie drogi do postantropocentryzmu” by Anna Filipowicz, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego, Gdańsk 2017

    No full text
The reviewed book by Anna Filipowicz entitled (Prze)zwierzęcenia. Poetyckie drogi do postantropocentryzmu is one of the key dissertations analyzing human and animal relations as exemplified by Polish poetry of the 20th and 21st century. The author is innovative in her interpretation of poems by poets considered to be canonical (Anna Świrszczyńska, Tadeusz Różewicz, Marcin Świetlicki, Ryszard Krynicki, Tomasz Różycki, Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz and Julian Tuwim), using her knowledge of ethology and natural science. The greatest strength of the dissertation, in the opinion of the reviewer, is the micrological analysis of individual works, enhancing the importance of the detail, due to which the reader receives a compendium of major problems connected with animal emancipation in two time planes (during the Warsaw Uprising and in contemporary times). Filipowicz calls for rejecting stereotypes which so far have enhanced species chauvinism and hierarchical structure in accidental encounters (the case of animals living in zoos and non-urbanized areas) as well as developing interspecies sensitivity. Its manifestations could include, for instance, concern about noticing individual biographies of animals during armed conflicts or preventing the destruction of biotopes. Filipowicz’s work is not only an example of skillful application of methodology bordering on environmental humanities, animal studies and affective studies, but also an important voice in the debate on constructing environmental order and the place/role of animals in human life. Autorka w sposób innowacyjny odczytuje wiersze poetów uznanych za kanoniczych (Anny Świrszczyńskiej, Tadeusza Różewicza, Marcina Świetlickiego, Ryszarda Krynickiego, Tomasza Różyckiego, Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza i Juliana Tuwima), wykorzystując wiedzę etologiczną i przyrodoznawczą. Największym atutem rozprawy, zdaniem recenzenta, jest mikrologiczna analiza poszczególnych utworów, dowartościowująca szczegół, dzięki czemu czytelnik otrzymuje kompendium podstawowych problemów związanych z emancypacją zwierząt w dwóch planach czasowych (podczas powstania warszawskiego i w czasach współczesnych).

Seriously about humour in the works of Christine Nöstlinger: the monograph "Lustige Gespenster" [Funny Phantoms] by Małgorzata Filipowicz

The paper is a presentation of the monograph "Lustige Gespenster" [Funny Phantoms] by Małgorzata Filipowicz, which is devoted to the techniques and forms of humour in the works for children and young adults by the Austrian author Christine Nöstlinger. The analysis of these aspects reveals a picture of literary output tightly correlated with the reality to date. Irony, grotesque, parody, exaggeration, accumulation of absurd situations are the ways and means the writer uses to present daily life full of problems. In her books she demythologizes family and traditional social roles, debunks stereotypes, shows the negative influence of authoritarian upbringing methods on young people and the ensuing intergenerational conflicts.Artykuł prezentuje monografię Małgorzaty Filipowicz "Lustige Gespenster", poświęconą technikom i formom komizmu w utworach dla dzieci i młodzieży austriackiej autorki Christine Nöstlinger. The effects of copper on the soil bacterial community in an agricultural soil

    No full text
Copper is an essential trace element needed for microbial growth and development; however, it is also toxic in higher concentrations. Typical background levels of copper in U.S. soils range from 5 to 50 µg/g dry weight. Elevated copper levels are hypothesized to cause a shift in the soil microbial community resulting in more copper resistant microbes. With the objective of evaluating major shifts in soil bacterial community composition as a result of elevated copper concentrations, three sets of soil microcosms were constructed using an agricultural soil collected from the Adelphia Freehold Research Center. The shifts in the bacterial community within the microcosms were investigated through denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). These data revealed the emergence of a variety of bacteria in the presence of elevated copper. Results indicated that a bacterium most similar to the order Sphingobacteriales was present in 500 µg/g copper amended microcosms, with no additional carbon supplementation after 91 days of incubation. A Chloroflexi-like bacterium was shown to be tolerant of copper in the 250 and 500 µg/g copper amendments after 14 days of incubation. A bacterium from the phylum Actinobacteria was present in highly copper contaminated microcosms (2,000 µg/g). In addition, a microorganism most closely related to the Arthrobacter sp. was shown to be tolerant of 500 µg/g copper, however only while in the presence of an added simple carbon source. Lastly, a bacterium belonging to the Rubrobacteraceae family of Actinobacteria was revealed in copper amended soils regardless of whether a carbon source was supplemented. The presence of these copper tolerant bacteria in a previously uncontaminated agricultural soil suggested a native copper resilience within the bacterial community.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Urszula I. “Ants stitching in the grass”. On animals in the works of Kornel Filipowicz and Wisława Szymborska

    No full text
Research on Wisława Szymborska’s poetry considers Kornel Filipowicz’s prose only to a small extent. Agnieszka Rydz does mention the author of To kill a deer! but her reflection concerns the landscape of memory, whereas Szymborska’s lyrical sceneries, interpreted in the zoocritical perspective, turn out to be akin to Filipowicz’s literary ecosystems. What testifies to that is among others artistic and axiological consequences of presenting human in interactions with wildlife, which was pointed out by Stanisław Burkot in the context of Alfred Adler’s findings. What points to the relation is also the geopoetics of those territories, which, according to Elżbieta Feliksiak, are conducive to reflections stemming from “being in the landscape”. It is in them, both in Filipowicz’s and the authoress of Parting with a View’s works – according to Krystyna Pietrych – that the border between the worlds of humans and animals is constantly being crossed. Literary, but also ontological properties of the mentioned borders, can be determined by taking into consideration the Umwelt category, introduced into research on animal behavior by Jakob von Uexkűll. Used by Alexandra Horowitz to describe the relation between man and dog, it allows to trace literary connections between Kornel Filipowicz, Wisława Szymborska and Thomas Mann
