Roy recounts the history of his grandfather, Onesime Bergeron, who moved from North Dakota to Washington state to Morinville, AB to Athabasca, AB. Roy's father, Horace, was one of the twelve Bergeron children. Onesime helped Horace build a sash and door business on Strathcona Street (50th) in c 1913. The business was eventually purchased a bit at a time by Mike Demchuk. No full textL’article présente une rétrospective de la carrière de Yves Bergeron en faisant le lien avec l’évolution des concepts en écologie forestière et le développement des nouvelles approches en aménagement forestier. Il est construit autour de plusieurs encarts présentant les contributions les plus importantes. Celles-ci sont le développement du cadre écologique comme base de décision pour l’aménagement forestier; la reconstitution historique des feux dans les milieux boréaux; la dynamique forestière après les perturbations naturelles; le développement de l’aménagement écosystémique des milieux forestiers; les enjeux liés à la productivité et aux forêts anciennes et finalement l’impact des changements climatiques. Compliance and Control: A Surveillance Reading of Harrison Bergeron
No full textThis paper examines the mechanisms and implications of surveillance as depicted in the well renowned American author Kurt Vonnegut’s short story Harrison Bergeron through the lens of Surveillance Theory, which predicts a dystopian future where institutions, under the guise of transparency, systematically erode individual privacy. It also argues that in this world, control is most effective when it no longer requires an enforcer, when the subject internalizes restraint so completely that rebellion becomes inconceivable. Harrison Bergeron portrays a state-enforced equality maintained through oppressive monitoring and physical/mental handicaps, revealing how surveillance can weaponize mediocrity to stifle human potential. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as Michel Foucault’s panopticon and contemporary discourses on digital surveillance, this analysis highlights how surveillance operates as a tool of power to normalize compliance and eliminate resistance. Vonnegut’s allegory of enforced sameness, underscores the enduring relevance of Surveillance Theory in understanding modern anxieties about privacy, autonomy, and resistance. Ultimately, Harrison Bergeron compresses its critique into a stark and an almost absurdist vision of state-enforced equality, where constant surveillance ensures enforced mediocrity
Modernisation de la théorie de l’État de Bergeron grâce à une étude de cas sur les amish du vieil ordre de l’Ontario
No full textLa théorie de l’État de Bergeron permet d’étudier les relations entre la gouverne de l’État et les citoyens. Nous revisitons la prémisse de Gérard Bergeron selon laquelle tous les membres de la société se politifient, c’est-à-dire passent de relations purement civiles à une certaine activation de la gouverne. Pour ce faire, nous étudions les amish du vieil ordre de l’Ontario. Ce groupe offre un exemple de social non politifié, concept mentionné une seule fois dans l’oeuvre de Bergeron. Grâce à l’étude de deux politiques ontariennes, la présente recherche démontre que ce groupe réfute l’adhésion inéluctable à la politie. Nous suggérons une piste pour moderniser la théorie de Bergeron.

Bergeron’s theory of the state is useful to examine the relations between the state’s “gouverne” and citizens. We revisit Gérard Bergeron’s assumption that all members of a society adhere to the “politie,” that is, move from relations that are purely civil to some activation of the “gouverne.” To that end, we study the Amish of the Old Order in Ontario. This group offers an example of “social non politifié,” a concept mentioned once in Bergeron’s work. Thanks to the examination of two Ontarian public policies, this research shows that this group does not comply with the inevitable transition to the “politie.” We suggest a path to modernize Bergeron’s theory
