Author of this thesis to enlarge about life of Karel Hoffmann, who considerably brought fame to Czech quartet tradition and music at all. This thesis is aimed primary to personality of Karel Hoffmann, first violinist of The Czech Quartet, in contradistinction of majority of currentliterature. It enters up mainly his non-quartet activities and also his life destiny. Author pursues to put in context important Hoffmann´s life matters and major events of development of The Czech Quartet. Writer would like to offer new view of known facts in the course of time and pay a tribute to Krel Hoffmann and his founding contribution for Czech musical art as well

Résumé This thesis aims to describe the life and work of the poet, translator, journalist and Czechoslovak diplomat Camill Hoffmann. Hoffmann was born to a Jewish family in Kolin, his mother tongue was German but he also spoke Czech well. He attended a grammar school in Prague where he soon became a member of a poet's society publishing in the journal Jaro (Spring) which was issued by Paul Leppin. "Spring generation", as they were later called after the journal, is counted to the neoromantics. At the beginning of the 20th century, Hoffmann leaves for Vienna where he begins to work as a journalist for the daily Zeit. There he makes friends with Stefan Zweig, together they translate Baudelaire's poetry book Flowers of Evil. While writing for the culture department of the Zeit, he has close contacts to writers from central Europe, to Arthur Schnitzler, Marie Ebner von Eschenbach or Detlev von Lilliencron. Recommended by Max Brod, Hoffmann also published a poem of Franz Werfel, by that time an unknown author. In 1912, Hoffmann moves to Dresden where he works as a culture section chief-editor of the daily Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten. Narodil se v židovské rodině ve středočeském Kolíně. Jeho mateřštinou byla němčina, ale stejně tak dobře hovořil i česky. Střední školu vystudoval v Praze, kde se stal členem skupiny básníků, uskupených kolem časopisu Jaro, který vydával Paul Leppin. "Jarní generace", jak byla tato skupina později nazvána, je řazena k novoromantikům. Začátkem 20. století odchází Hoffmann do Vídně, kde začíná pracovat jako redaktor deníku Zeit. Ve Vídni se spřátelil se Stefanem Zweigem, společně s ním přeložil Baudelairovou sbírku básní Květy zla. V pozici redaktora literární rubriky je neustále v kontaktu s rakouskými, respektive středoevropskými spisovateli, kupříkladu s Arthurem Schnitzlerem, Marií von Eschenbach nebo Detlevem von Liliencronem. Na doporučení Maxe Broda nechal Hoffmann otisknout báseň tehdy ještě neznámého Franze Werfela. V roce 1912 se Hoffmann stěhuje do Drážďan, kde nastupuje místo vedoucího kulturní rubriky Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten. V jeho bytě v Hellerau jej navštěvují mladí expresionisté. Po vypuknutí první světové války je Hoffmann prohlášen jako nepostradatelný pro fungování novin, a nemusí tudíž narukovat. Válku přečkal v Drážďanech.
