Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth-Century England

No full text
The general councils of the fifteenth century constituted a remarkable political experiment, which used collective decision-making to tackle important problems facing the church. Such problems had hitherto received rigid top-down management from Rome. However, at Constance and Basle, they were debated by delegates of different ranks from across Europe and resolved through majority voting. Fusing the history of political thought with the study of institutional practices, this innovative study relates the procedural innovations of the general councils and their anti-heretical activities to wider trends in corporate politics, intellectual culture and pastoral reform. Alexander Russell argues that the acceptance of collective decision-making at the councils was predicated upon the prevalence of group participation and deliberation in small-scale corporate culture. Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth-Century England offers a fundamental reassessment of England's relationship with the general councils, revealing how political thought, heresy, and collective politics were connected.</jats:p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

Get PDF
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Amerikalı mühtedi : Muhammed Alexander Russell Webb (1846-1916)

Amerika’da İslam’ın Tarihi genellikle Afro-Amerikan ve XX. Yüzyılın başlarında Müslümanların Amerika’ya göç ederek oluşturduğu topluluklarla bağdaştırılmaktadır. Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad, Sulayman Nyang, Allan Austin, Aminah McCloud, Richard Turner, Jane I. Smith, Umar F. Abd-Allah ve Kathleen M. Moore gibi akademisyenlerin günümüzde ABD’deki müslümanların tarihi üzerine ciddi çalışmaları vardır. Bu tez çalışmasında New York’un Hudson kasabasında dünyaya gelen Muhammed Alexander Russell Webb’in (1846-1916) hayatı, faaliyetleri ve ilmi çalışmaları ortaya kondu. Islamic History in America has generally been associated with African Americans and 20. century immigration population. Recent studies by scholars such as Yvonne Yazbeck 4Haddad, Sulayman Nyang, Allan Austin, Aminah McCloud, Richard Turner, Jane I. Smith, Umar F. Abd-Allah and Kathleen M. Moore have begun to contest this notion. This thesis continues to reassess Islam’s place within American religious history by examining the life and work of a remarkable nineteenth-century American figure, Muhammed Alexander Russell Webb (1846-1916) who was born in Hudson, New York, a white Muslim convert who challenged the prevailing anti-Islamic sentiments of the time. He was the only representative of Islam at the World’s Parliament of Religions in 1893. Refuting previously undisputed myths, Webb’s aim was not to proselytize his religion, but to demonstrate to his fellow representatives, as well as the American public that their concepts of Islam as a non-progressive religion, intolerant of women, violent, were unfounded. Also Muhammed Webb welcomed religious pluralism enthusiastically and played his own role in America’s gradual evolution toward it. A few years after resigned the Manila consulship, with his Islamic mission in New York (1893-96) foundering, Webb resorted to publishing and disseminating propaganda, albeit anonymously, for the Ottoman Empire. Indeed, his efforts earned him the favor of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who duly recognized Webb for his services. The man who began his diplomatic career as an American Consul ended it as Honorary Ottoman Consul General in New York. This thesis, then, seeks to present and assessearly American muslims life and work within the broader context of the history of Islam in Americ
