Generic Battery Model based on a Parametric Implementation
Batteries are a common element used in many electronic applications. Therefore, the analysis and simulation of these applications requires a battery model in order to validate the behavior of the whole system. Since batteries are based on different technologies, a modeling approach valid for any technology is a potential good alternative. Since there are similarities among the different technologies, it is possible to address the modeling of batteries as generic energy storage elements with particular differences. This work presents a battery model valid for different technologies based on a parametric implementation

El contenido de este trabajo da a conocer la propuesta realizada para uno de los consorcios del SITP, ETIB S.A.S, de la implementación de 3 pilares de TPM, dirigido a los resultados del área de mantenimiento.
Para iniciar se realiza un diagnóstico previo del estado actual del área de mantenimiento a partir del enfoque kantiano, analizando el funcionamiento del proceso de mantenimiento desde la perspectiva de personas, artefactos y entorno.

Concluding Report, Rincon Bayou Demonstration Project, Volume I Executive Summary
The Rincon Bayou Demonstration Project significantly lowered the minimum flooding threshold of the upper Nueces Delta, thereby increasing the opportunity for larger, more frequent diversions of fresh water from the Nueces River. During the 50-month demonstration period, the amount of fresh water diverted into the upper Nueces Delta was increased by about 732%. Five freshwater inflow events were sufficient to activate the project's Rincon Overflow Channel and inundate, to varying degrees, the tidal flats of the upper delta. These tidal flows would not have otherwise been directly freshened. As a result, in a relatively short period of time (only 4.2 years after the opening of the project's Nueces Overflow Channel), the average salinity gradient in the upper delta reverted to a more natural form, with average salinity concentrations in upper Rincon Bayou becoming the lowest in Nueces Delta. The effects of the demonstration project on the ecology of Rincon Bayou and the upper Nueces Delta were positive to the environment. Single-celled plant communities in the water column (phytoplankton) and on the surface of the sediments (microphytobenthos) evidenced increases in primary productivity with the reduction of salinity concentrations. Benthic communities (composed of bottom-dwelling organisms) evidenced increases in abundance, biomass and diversity. And, vegetation communities evidenced increases in plant cover and decreases in bare area. In summary, it was observed that freshwater inflow controlled, to a great extent, the ecological function of the upper delta ecosystem by regulating critical biological mechanisms. A significant degree of ecological function was returned to the Nueces Delta and Nueces Estuary ecosystems by the demonstration project. Prior to the project, persistently high salinity concentrations severely inhibited the function of the Nueces Delta, and the delta's natural contribution to the greater estuary ecosystem was limited to infrequent periods when natural flow events occurred. With the restored regular interaction between the Nueces River and Rincon Bayou, fresh water and nutrients were more consistently introduced into the upper delta. As a resvilt, estuarine habitat in the delta component of the Nueces Estuary improved in both quality and quantity, and foraging opportunities for many estuarine species were increased

Creating a climate for success?: Does racial composition matter for undergraduate Latina/o STEM retention?
As the United States population approaches a minority majority, the need to address educational inequities is intensified, especially for Latina/o students, who are among the fastest growing ethnic minority group across the United States and at four-year colleges and universities. Concerns for national security, human capital development, innovation, and equity also demand increased representation of domestic under-represented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This quantitative dissertation comprises three studies that are informed by six years of semester-by-semester student-level data from six large, public, doctoral granting, research-intensive universities located in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. First, I examine differences in STEM degree attainment among Latinos at the intersections of Latino ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status and find evidence for the need to target STEM intervention efforts for Latinos by gender. Second, I explore the relationship between structural diversity and Latina/o STEM student persistence to degree and find a modest and negative relationship between increases in Latino racial composition at the cohort level and student departure from the university; however, no differences were observed for STEM departure or other measures of structural diversity. The Rincon Astrolabe Shipwreck
On 30 December 1986, a local fisherman incidentally discovered the remains of a
seventeenth-century merchantman off the coast of Rincon, a small municipality on
Puerto Rico's west coast. Some days later, he and some acquaintances extracted objects
from the site and stored them in a nearby restaurant. The assemblage of artifacts
recovered included, among other items, pins, scissors, ordnance, pewter ware,
woodworking tools, a myriad of concretions and a nautical astrolabe. It is from the last
that the wreck site took its name. The operation continued for months until local
authorities, alerted by a member of the salvage group, issued a cease and desist order.
At that point, the whole affair entered a legal process that on the summer of 2005 had
not reached its conclusion.
The purpose of this thesis is twofold. First, the author presents the story of the
shipwreck from the moment it was found until the court ruled regarding ownership of
the artifacts. Since this was the first time ownership of a shipwreck was debated in
Puerto Rican courts in recent history, this gives the reader an idea of how legal
precedence was established concerning the island's submerged cultural resources.
Second, based on what was popularly perceived to be the site's most remarkable find, a
study was developed on the sea or mariner's astrolabe, a navigation instrument that played a fundamental role in the process of European maritime expansion during the late
fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The reader of this text will learn that, during the fifteenth century, Portuguese
navigators saw the need to gradually depart from the traditional Mediterranean
navigation technique known as "dead reckoning." As their explorations along the West
African coast forced them to sail far into the Atlantic Ocean for prolonged periods, a
new method was developed that consisted of measuring the angle of certain heavenly
bodies above the horizon in order to determine the latitude of the observer with
reasonable precision. For this purpose, instruments that traditionally belonged to the
field of astronomy were adapted to be used by seamen. Among them was the astrolabe,
which became the most popular by the turn of the sixteenth century. After discussing
the instrument's origin and development, the author analyzes how a renewed interest on
the nautical astrolabe, which emerged in Portugal in the early twentieth century,
introduced the instrument to the field of modern scholarly research. This work also
presents a catalogue of sixteen sea astrolabes, some of which have never been published.
The catalogue shows statistics and other relevant information, while placing the artifacts
in the context of the previously existing data
