Fine aggregate resources in the greater Cape Town area
Includes bibliographical references.Fine aggregate resources in the Greater Cape Town area have historically been in abundant supply. This supply has been typically comprised of the extensive natural building sand deposits that are scattered throughout the region. However, over the past decade increasing concerns have been raised regarding their long-term availability. This concern has arisen from reports suggesting the diminishing reserves of naturally occurring fine aggregates, which have historically dominated the market, and are beginning to near the end of their reserve life. The research undertaken in this thesis was to assess the plausibility of this concern and ascertain an understanding as to the future supply of resources in the region. In order to address the issues raised, a comprehensive understanding of fine aggregates, their properties and their source are required. This was developed in a literature review, whereby this knowledge provided an understanding as to the type of material that is preferable for fine aggregate use. The findings highlights the importance of using a resource that possesses properties, which are most appropriate for its specific use. In terms of concrete, this is achieved through using materials which possess the following preferred properties: (1) round particle shape and smooth surface texture, (2) a wide range of particle sizes that are well distributed, and (3) a mineralogical composition that is relatively inert, thus is not deleterious in concrete. Additionally, a resource must be economically viable, and be exploited in a manner such that the development aims to safeguard the environment for the benefit of current and future generations. These concepts and principles were then applied to the subsequent study into the fine aggregate resources located within the greater Cape Town region
Doubts about how the Middle Horizon Collapsed on the South Coast of Peru (c. AD 1000), and other insights from the looted cemeteries of the Lower Ica Valley
This paper presents new information from funerary contexts in the lower Ica Valley, south coast of Peru, spanning two millennia from the end of the Early Horizon to the Late Intermediate Period. Although severely looted, these sites can still yield valuable information. We discuss their architecture and material culture in the context of radiocarbon dates. Among other findings, these cast new light on the poorly understood transition from the Middle Horizon to the Late Intermediate Period, for which a paucity of archaeological data from c.A.D. 1000 to 1250 has long been taken as evidence of an environmentally or socially-induced demographic collapse. Yet the data we present here suggests that the basins of the lower Ica Valley were likely occupied continuously over this period, and that the echoes of Wari influence here may have lasted longer than previously thought

Small and medium agility dogs alter their kinematics when the distance between hurdles differs
There is currently a lack of research examining the health and welfare implications for competitive agility dogs. The aim of this study was to examine if jump kinematics and apparent joint angles in medium (351 mm - 430 mm to the withers) and small (< 350 mm to the withers) agility dogs altered when distances between consecutive upright hurdles differ. Dogs ran a course of nine hurdles; three set at 3.6 m apart; three at 4 m apart and three at 5 m apart. Both medium (P=0.044) and small (P=0.006) dogs landed closer to the hurdle when consecutive hurdles were set at 3.6 m apart, with small dogs jumping slower at this distance (P=0.006). Results indicate that jump kinematics, but not apparent joint angles, alter when the spacing between hurdles differs. These findings may have implications for the health and welfare of agility dogs and should be used to inform future changes to rules and regulations
Identifying as author: exploring the pedagogical basis for assisting diverse students to discover their identities through creatively defined literacy narratives
This thesis explores the current discourse surrounding the redefinition of concepts such as text and authorship in the field of composition studies. Drawing from scholarship on topics ranging from multi-modal composition to feminist historical-appropriation, the author builds a case for redefining these concepts to include a broader range of texts and author-voices from which instructors can draw for course readings. By focusing on the particular instance of selecting readings to teach a literacy narrative unit in a first year college composition course, the author shows how redefining and broadening concepts of text and authorship may allow for students to more easily identify with a literary heritage and identify themselves as authors whose literacy-related experiences have something significant to add to the academic conversation. The chapters present a review of literature, introduce methods and processes for teaching a literacy narrative unit in a freshman composition course, offer the reflections of the instructor on teaching the literacy narrative, and justify a process of selecting texts which aren\u27t necessarily identified as literacy narratives as models for student literacy narratives --Leaf iv
Age, office type, job satisfaction and performance
Age is everything but a number, as it covers individual changes in physical, mental, social and societal aspects; factors that influence people’s perceptions and expectations in life. This research focuses on ageing in an environment which normally covers a long period of time in life: the workplace. The aim of this study is to get insight into the influence of age in relation to the experience of the office environment and job performance. A differentiation will be made between traditional cellular offices with assigned places andflexible office concepts(i.e. more open layouts with non-assigned placesand multiple age groups will be distinguished). It is important to emphasize the effects of ageing on an individual performance level as well as on an organizational performance level. The results can help organizations to anticipate the possible difficulties people from different ages encounter in general in their work environment. Also, these findings can give organizations insight into how the preferences of employees of different ages can be taken into account. The results will lead into suggestions for making the work environment attractive for employees of all age groups and to recruit or retain talented and valuable employees.Overall, the outcomes will be supportive for decision-making regarding optimization or adaptation of the current or new office environment.Real Estate and HousingArchitecture and The Built Environmen
Real Estate and HousingArchitecture and The Built Environmen
