    No full text
The effect of heat treatment on the structure and mechanical properties of Co-Fe-Cr-Si-B/Fe-Cr-B/Fe-Ni-B amorphous alloys has been studied systematically. Melt-quenching (spinning method) was used for production of investigated amorphous alloys. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to study the structure transformations. The effect of temperature on deformation behavior (plasticity, microhardness, crack resistance, and the density and average length of shear bands) of the amorphous alloys was studied by bending and microindentation. It is shown that the ductile–brittle transition, which occurs at the stage of structure relaxation in amorphous alloys, is caused by two factors: a decrease in the susceptibility of the amorphous matrix to plastic flow and an abrupt decrease in the resistance to the development of quasibrittle cracks. It is established that the transition to a two-phase amorphous–nanocrystalline state upon annealing leads to substantial strengthening of the alloys and a partial recovery of their plasticity. It is proved that the strengthening of amorphous alloys at the initial stages of crystallization can be initiated by the difference in the elastic moduli of the amorphous matrix and the precipitated nanocrystals, as well as by the specific features of the interaction between nanocrystalline phase particles and shear bands propagating under external actions. It is established that the phenomenon of plasticization in amorphous alloys (the crack resistance can increase after annealing in a certain temperature range) is due to the effective retardation of cracks on nanoparticles

The two selected works for analysis are mini-series dealing with historical narratives: A Muralha and Um Só Coração, produced by Globo Networks - Brazil, also stressing out the work of their author, Maria Adelaide Amaral. The initial goal in this study was a comparison between fictional narratives and historical knowledge. However, developing the subject allowed us to work with a collective cultural and industrial product, which uses the historical information in order to build an unique fictional narrative. These two mini-series based on historical events were selected because they both relate to aspects of the history of São Paulo city. In comparing fiction with the historiographical studies, we were able to identify some of the sources which were used, as well as the transformations that have occurred at the mini-series. We can see that the fictional narratives in television drama, even based in historical events, are structured according to the logic of romantic fiction. The historical information is diluted into the pitoresque, the exotic, the distinctive, but is still understood by the average viewer an image of the historical trut

The Indology of Mlecchas. India between Orientalisms: the French-Britain Indophobia and the German Transeuropean indomania

Those intellectuals who, in Western modernity, were able to escape from the Orientalist intellectual vanguard position are the ones that were actually profoundly involved with Eastern philosophy (specially the Indian one), and undoubtedly that was emphasized among the Germans. . This philosophical apprehension remained almost entirely apart from the exploratory imperialist justifications, so attractive to the English and French minds, to Saids orientalists, and so exploited by the literary and Orientalist determinations indicated by him. Therefore, we confirm and disagree simultaneously with the author of Orientalism when it comes to a fundamental point: Germany has contrasting Orientalisms one, rooted specifically on the communicating veins from the English and the French, which confirms Saids thesis; the other, under the gaze of Nietzsche and Weber, among others, opposes to the imperialist Orientalism. From this premise, we have treated the pioneerism of nations moved by the strategy to know in order to invade or codify to dominate: that is England and France. Then, we searched for the occurrence of a fruitful and broad intellectual understanding in terms of the contact and transmission of ideas that took place in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, among the so-called Indian East and Western Germany

Effects Of Pulsation Frequency On Trailing Edge Plasma Actuators For Flight Control

This thesis details the aerodynamic testing of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator operating over a separation step created at the trailing edge of a modified NACA 0012 aerofoil. The work focuses specifically on the use of pulsed or interrupted plasma actuation as opposed to continuously driven actuation, to increase the change in the lift produced by activating the system. The behaviour of the actuation system is characterised in a lamina flow regime at a Reynolds number of 1.33 x 105 using force balance measurements. At zero incidence the actuator produced a peak change in CL of approximately 0.015. However, this result is sensitive to changes in the interruption frequency of the plasma, by changing the plasma drive waveform the system was able to produce both positive and negative changes in lift. A relationship was identified between the change in CL produced and the ratio of the plasma interruption frequency to the natural vortex shedding frequency. This effect was investigated using both time averaged particle image velocimetry (PIV) and instantaneous phase locked PIV images captured in sequence throughout the plasma interruption cycle. The phase locked images showed how variation in the pulsation frequency was able to produce bi-directional actuation by either constructively or destructively interfering with the vortex formation from the back of the separation step. This interference in turn altered the level of separation which was occurring, altering the degree of upwash in the wake and therefore the lift generated by the aerofoil. PIV images were also gathered for device operation at a Reynolds number of 2.3 x 104; this produced a much higher ratio of DBD jet energy to that of the freestream. These conditions showed modified actuator behaviour due to the increased authority over the flow. However, the data still showed a strong interdependence on the reinforcement or destruction of the vortex street by the actuator interruption. Furthermore, work was undertaken to develop an actuator topology based on thin metallised films along with a dielectric which was hardened against the chemical and electrical stresses present in a functioning DBD device. The failure mechanisms of metallised film actuators were investigated, and actuators with lifetimes exceeding 8 hours were demonstrated. A manufacture method for a silicon polymer (PDMS) – Kapton® laminate is detailed; this is shown to be highly resistant to both electrical breakdown and chemical attack by the oxygen plasma
