Alessi Kettle
Collaborating with renowned designers from around the world, Alessi Designs produces an incredible range of tableware, silverware, bowls, and cutlery. Called 'Kettle with a Singing Whistle,' its sophisticated brass whistle produces the SI and TI notes that sound similar to the river boat whistles heard on the Rhine. Richard Sapper spent one year developing the device, collaborating with a maker of tuning pipes in the Black Forest since Sapper wanted the kettle to feature a whistle that produced a note or melody.Fuhrman, Peter. 4 Dec. 1990, “You Are What You Cook with.
A Framework for Incorporating Minority Stress Theory into Treatment with Sexual Minority Clients
Empirical research has consistently demonstrated the negative mental health consequences of minority stress among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations; however, there is little understanding of how minority stress should be addressed in the actual clinical situation. This article discusses how to incorporate minority stress theory into clinical practice with LGB clients. A proposed framework begins with a two-part clinical assessment. The first part, based on Meyer’s (2003) minority stress model, examines the effects of prejudice events, stigma, internalized homophobia, and sexual orientation concealment. The second part, grounded in Hatzenbuelher’s (2009) work, examines the client’s coping/emotional regulation, social/interpersonal, and cognitive processes, which can be elevated by minority stress. Following the assessment process, the framework suggests using a LGB-affirmative treatment approach. The framework will be applied to the treatment of a black lesbian client in order to demonstrate its clinical utility.Peer reviewe
A Characterization of Distance between 1-Bounded Compact Ultrametric Spaces through a Universal Space
The category of 1-bounded compact ultrametric spaces (KUMs) and non-distance increasing functions has been extensively used in the semantics of concurrent programming languages. In this paper a universal space U for KUMs is introduced, such that each KUM can be isometrically embedded in it. The space U consists of a suitable subset of the space of functions from [0, 1) to N, endowed with a "prefix-based" ultrametric. U allows to characterize the distance between KUMs introduced in Alessi et al. (1995) in terms of the Hausdorff distance between its compact subsets. As applications, it is proved how to derive the existence of limits for Cauchy towers of spaces without using the classical categorical construction and how to find solutions of recursive domain equations inside P-nco(U)
‘The Darkest Times of My Life’: Recollections of Child Abuse among Forced Migrants Persecuted because of Their Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
Numerous studies demonstrate that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) children and youth are likely to experience abuse by peers, parents, and other adults and that these experiences correlate with a host of mental health problems. However, there is little understanding of the experiences of LGBT children and youth living in countries where social and legal protections for sexual and gender minorities are limited or nonexistent. This qualitative study used thematic analysis to explore the child and adolescent abuse experiences and their impact on the pre-migration mental health of LGBT forced migrants. We analyzed 26 interviews with individuals who obtained refugee or asylee status in the United States or Canada on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Participants originated from countries in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Analysis revealed the following themes: abuse by parents and caregivers, abuse by peers and school personnel, having nowhere to turn, and dealing with psychological distress. Findings indicate that participants experienced severe verbal, physical, and sexual abuse throughout childhood and adolescence and that this abuse occurred at home, in school, and in the community. Furthermore, there were no resources or sources of protection available to them. Participants linked their abuse to subjective experiences of depression, anxiety, and traumatic stress, as well as suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. We conclude with implications for refugee adjudication practices, mental health care, and international policy.© 2015. Standardizing the Language of Corporate Internal Investigative Reports: Linguistic Perspectives on Professional Writing practices.
Drawing on Bhatia's (2008) notions of intertextuality and interdiscursivity, this study examines generic and lexico-grammatical features found in a corpus of anonymised internal investigative reports produced by a large multinational company. It considers how insights gained from genre analysis and corpus-assisted discourse analysis (Partington 2008, 2013; Alessi 2013 ) may furnish the company with future recommendations in fine-tuning these reports for a previously unaccounted for external readership by lawyers and paralegals. On a more general scale, my interests attempt to illustrate how academic research findings, based on the study of existing communicative practices, might better inform, improve and shape future professional practice.
My study addresses reports produced by a large multinational corporation, which conducts internal investigations regarding problematic employee behaviour, such as misconduct, accidents, theft, complaints, and issues of compliance. These reports are based on investigator-employee interviews, which were intended only for internal use only. They may however be unexpectedly required, at a future date, for legal purposes such as in litigation cases between an employee and the company.
The company involved, expressed interest in employing external linguistic expertise - or mediation - in examining how individual reporting could be best standardized, in order to avoid detailed editing and re-writing. In an effort to establish more uniform lexical and grammatical choices amongst authors, the company hopes that the reports might create higher degrees of shared certainty and more objective evaluation of the circumstances between the various cases and investigators. A principle aim is to produce standardized documentation, which foreseeably could be better defended in court. In linguistic terms, the company is intent on imposing register variation and re-contextualizing language of these internal reports in order to create documentation, which can be legally defended while using English as a Lingua Franca.
Corpus-assisted and genre-based approaches, together with Sketch Engine applications, will provide input into describing current report macrostructure, lexico-grammatical choices, and what suggestions can be made to standardize and render reports written by international agents legally resistant. Particular attention is given to prescribing choice of reporting verbs, contents and moves of the executive summary, vague versus explicit language, expressing factuality and allegations.
