Structural Properties of Polyglutamine Aggregates Investigated via Molecular Dynamics Simulations
Polyglutamine (polyQ) beta-stranded aggregates constitute the hallmark of Huntington disease. The disease is fully penetrant when Q residues are more than 36-40 ("disease threshold"). Here, based on a molecular dynamics study on polyQ helical structures of different shapes and oligomeric states, we suggest that the stability of the aggregates increases with the number of monomers, while it is rather insensitive to the number of Qs in each monomer. However, the stability of the single monomer does depend on the number of side-chain intramolecular H-bonds, and therefore oil the number of Qs. If such number is lower than that of the disease threshold, the beta-stranded monomers are unstable and hence may aggregate with lower probability, consistently with experimental findings. Our results provide a possible interpretation of the apparent polyQ length dependent-toxicity, and they do not support the so-called "structural threshold hypothesis", which supposes a transition from random coil to a beta-sheet structure only above the disease threshold

Intra-anal condyloma: Surgical or topical treatment?
Human Papillomavirus infections are the strongest risk factors for genital cancer and are the causative agents of anogenital warts. Although the viral types associated with condylomata usually do not cause carcinoma, in women with a history of these lesions there is an increased risk of intraepithelial neoplasia and cancer. Generally the lesions are not life-threatening, but they provoke significant morbidity, are difficult to treat, and are a source of psychosocial stress. Thus, condylomata represent not only a health problem for the patient but also an economic burden for the society. Considering the individual episodes of care, men experience a longer duration of the lesions and incur greater costs than women. We report a case of a male patient with external and intra-anal condyloma resistant to laser therapy. Initially, surgical intervention appeared required because of florid and intra-anal growth. HPV DNA testing and sequencing revealed the presence of HPV 6. After initial discomfort, the lesions were successfully cleared with topical imiquimod 5 percent cream therapy

Optofluidics: A new tool for sensing
Over the last years optofluidics has emerged as a very promising field. The integration at microscopic level between optics and microfluidics provides a number of unique characteristics that cannot be obtained with solid materials only. This paper briefly reviews the state of the art on optofluidics for sensing applications. We first describe the different approaches in order to realized optofluidic waveguides. These waveguides allow an increased interaction efficiency between the light and the liquid substance that can be very useful in sensing applications (fluorescence, absorption spectroscopy, etc.). We then illustrate high sensitive optofluidic devices such as Mach–Zehnder interferometers, Fabry–Pérot cavities and ring resonators. Examples of applications of optofluidic sensors for chemical and biological analysis are given.MicroelectronicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

From Power to Pleasure: Homosexuality in the Arab-Muslim World from Lakhi’a to al-mukhannathun
We propose a historical-philological analysis of the attitudes in Islam and Arab culture toward practices of masculine homosexuality (from the pre-Islamic period until end of the first century of Hijra) based on a review of scriptural (Qur’an, Sunnah, fiqh) and literary sources. We hypothesize the existence of a historical dialectic between two ideological models: on the one hand, the heterosexual norm intertwined with patriarchal domination and Islam; on the other, the existence of homosexual love and other forms of sexuality and gender. First we have discovered that the earliest myth concerning sodomy dates back to a much earlier era than has been assumed in modern studies of homosexuality. Then we propose the thesis according to which in pre-Islamic times homosexuality was associated to power relations, but that homosexual imagery and practices linked to pleasure already emerged at the time of the Prophet. In the prophetic era, the visibility of male homosexuality—which we have been able to analyze only indirectly, i.e., through the treatment reserved for the mukhannathun—was regulated through a socio-political compromise aimed at mediating between hadith of explicit condemnation and tolerance of sexual attitudes and behaviors considered less subversive. Starting from the following era (after Othman’s admission of the mukhannathun to Medina), homosexual practices would begin to conquer more and more spaces of visibility and freedom
