    In this paper the indications of the 1972 report of the club of Rome about the relationship between environment and economic growth are reviewed and compared to the ideas debated nowadays on the same topic. The implications of the stages of growth approach and of the economic growth models are considered. Market failure has a central role when the environment is considered. Hence the main problems of policy design and evaluation and their implications for international cooperation, as studied in a burgeoning literature, are presented.

    This overview covers, in particular, chlorinated phenols, alkylphenols and steroidal estrogens that have caused great concern because of their adverse effects, diffusion and resistance to (bio)degradation. We first describe strategies for combining liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to recognize metabolites, providing evidence for the advantages and the limitations of the available techniques and predicting future trends in this field. We then review the present state of the art in the analysis of the above compounds. We pay particular attention to those LC-MS methods involving the analysis of target phenolic compounds and identification of their unknown products in the various environmental compartments.     This review focuses on recent developments and trends in liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, with a particular emphasis on tandem mass spectrometry and the new criteria established by the European Union for performing confirmatory analysis of veterinary drugs in animal-food products. The combination of liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry allows unequivocal identification of traces of antibiotics and antibacterial agents in complex biological matrices, such as honey, eggs, milk and meat. The sensitivity of the coupling is particularly useful for confirming the presence of banned substances that require limits of detection as low as possible. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd.     Application of the Generalized Propensity Score. Evaluation of public contributions to Piedmont enterprises.

    In this article, we apply a generalization of the propensity score of Rosenbaum and Rubin (1983b). Techniques based on the propensity score have long been used for causal inference in observational studies for reducing bias caused by non-random treatment assignment. In last years, Joffe and Rosenbaum (1989) and Imbens and Hirano (2000) suggested two possible extensions to standard propensity score for ordinal and categorical treatments respectively. Propensity score techniques, allowing for continuous treatments effect evaluation, were, instead, recently proposed by Van Dick Imai (2003) and Imbens and Hirano (2004). We refer to Imbens' approach for the use of the generalized propensity score, to widen its application for continuous treatment regimes.

    Hybrid Quadrupole Time-of-Flight for the Determination of Chlorophenols in Surface Water by Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

    A QSTAR Pulsor quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer was used for the determination of chlorophenols in surface water samples. The investigated compounds were: 2-chlorophenol; 4chloro-3-methylphenol; 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. Each analyte is listed by the US-EPA as a priority pollutant. Sample enrichment of water samples was achieved by a solid-phase extraction procedure, using a Waters Oasis HLB cartridges followed by LC-Tandem-MS. A narrow-bore 2.1-mm-i.d. reversed phase LC C-18 column operating with a mobile phase flow rate of 0.2 mL min(-1). was used to separate the analytes. The whole column effluent was diverted to the ion spray interface source. For the determination of the analytes the hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight spectrometer operated in product ion scan acquisition mode. Average recoveries from 2 L samples varied from 91 to 110% and relative standard deviations (RSD) were less than 10% for all samples. The limit of defection (signal-to-noise ratio=3) of the method for the phenols in drinking water samples is less than 10 ng L-1. In real environmental samples, levels of the selected analytes varied from non-detected" up to 0.5 mug L-1 for pentachlorophenol
