Experimental validation for the application of the flat jack test in cob walls

    No full text
The flat jack test is one of the most applied investigation techniques in the field of cultural heritage conservation. The purpose of the experimental campaign presented in this paper was to assess the feasibility of the technique to measure the average compressive levels of stress in existing cob walls and determine their mechanical properties. It was observed that the single flat jack test tended to overestimate the average value of stress by a factor of two. Therefore, it is advised to apply a value of Ke 1⁄4 0:51 to correct the average compressive stress values obtained with the use of this technique

Numerical Modeling of Cob’s Nonlinear Monotonic Structural Behavior

    No full text
It has been observed by performing simple and diagonal compression tests of cob wallettes that the structural behavior of cob is highly nonlinear. This paper presents the results obtained of the simulation of cob’s nonlinear monotonic behavior using two well-known finite element commercial packages. Pros and cons of different available constitutive material models are identified and discussed. Concrete (CONCR) and Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) are considered as the constitutive material models that provide the more satisfactory results reproducing cob’s nonlinear monotonic behavior when using ANSYS and ABAQUS, respectively

A limit analysis approach to the assessment of masonry arch structures under the influence of fundamental parameters

    No full text
The majority of buildings in the world are made of masonry, and some of these buildings are historical constructions with heritage values. It is commonly known that masonry can withstand significant compressive stresses, but since it lacks tensile strength, it is more susceptible to dynamic actions. In this aspect a curvature was introduced in masonry constructions in order to reduce the tensile stresses and exploit their compressive strength. This innovative structural element in the past enabled crossing large spans without intermediate supports at the cost of a horizontal thrust transmitted to the supports. The structural condition of the supports constructed of masonry is of crucial importance to resist this horizontal force that varies in intensity based on the type of curvature of the arch. Additionally, a non-standard approach including joint friction has shown to be important in such structures and therefore sliding mechanisms are investigated. Research on critical parameters affecting the safety levels of piers under the thrust of arches is carried out using an in-house code (ALMA) that uses limit analysis as a rigid block approach to modeling masonry with frictional joints. Under two cases of vertical live load, symmetric and asymmetric, the different pier textures, levels of joint friction and arch shallowness, were examined. The main outcomes of the study demonstrate that even before initiating any expensive testing campaign, complex structural analysis, the investigation of these parameters in the structure itself present the most important features of its safety level and vulnerability.Presented at the 11th International Civil Engineering, Infrastructure and Environment Conference (IC-CEIE) 2022, Kosovo

    Normalisation for Dynamic Pattern Calculi

    Get PDF
The Pure Pattern Calculus (PPC) extends the lambda-calculus, as well as the family of algebraic pattern calculi, with first-class patterns; that is, patterns can be passed as arguments, evaluated and returned as results. The notion of matching failure of the PPC not only provides a mechanism to define functions by pattern matching on cases but also supplies PPC with parallel-or-like, non-sequential behaviour. Therefore, devising normalising strategies for PPC to obtain well-behaved implementations turns out to be challenging. This paper focuses on normalising reduction strategies for PPC. We define a (multistep) strategy and show that it is normalising. The strategy generalises the leftmost-outermost strategy for lambda-calculus and is strictly finer than parallel-outermost. The normalisation proof is based on the notion of necessary set of redexes, a generalisation of the notion of needed redex encompassing non-sequential reduction systems

Lesbianity, censorship and transgression: Cassandra Rios' autobiographical writing

    No full text
Cassandra Rios (1932-2002), Odete Rios pseudonym, was a Brazilian author of erotic literature that represented homossexual characters and above all, amorous relationships between women. The main period of her production marks the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship's Years (1964-1985), yelding to the author her books countless processes, prohibitions, censorship and persecution for being stigmatized and seen as pornographic. In addition, Rios published two autobiographical writings, Mezzamaro, Flores e Cassis: o pecado de Cassandra (2000) e Censura: minha luta meu amor (1977) when she mentions intimate moments of her trajectory and memory, also dealing with the question about her persecution during especially the 1960s and 1970s. Aiming at the possibility of the biographies' studies and more specifically the autobiographical writings as a way of understanding aspects of the author's contexto in question, as well a the dynamics of power inserted in the process of producting a feminine "self-writing" this Project aims to continue scientific initiation work and analyze the autobiographical narratives of Rios from a historiographic perspective. In this sense, the construction of the author's memorialistic writing will be interprete and mapped, establishing approximations and distances with the female autobiographical theory relating such genre to the context of Cassandra Rios' production and her autobiographical performance.Não recebi financiament
