    Tectonics

    No full text
Tectonics is a series of geospatial investigations designed to augment existing middle school Earth science curriculum. Students use Web GIS to investigate important tectonics concepts. The investigations include scientific practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas from the National Research Council (2012) Framework for K-12 Science Education. Educational levels: Middle school, High school

    Stockertown Sinkhole Dilemma

    No full text
In this activity students learn about the Stockertown sinkholes and decide who should be responsible for compensating property damage caused by a sinkhole. Students read a description of a stakeholder's role and access the resources that they will use to develop a position statement about who should be responsible for the investigation and remediation of the Stockertown, Pennsylvania sinkholes. They create a position statement based on their assigned role of the stakeholder and cover who should be responsible for the investigation and remediation of the Stockertown sinkholes, what should be done to solve the sinkhole problem, what might be causing the sinkholes, and what new policies should be created to protect the interest of homeowners affected by sinkholes. They will be responsible for presenting a long-term action plan to prevent and/or remediate sinkhole destruction in class during a simulated town hall meeting. Educational levels: Middle school, High school

    Carolina Coastal Science

    No full text
The Carolina Coastal Science Web site is an innovative, inquiry-based science resource that utilizes the interactive technologies of a Web browser to explore science in coastal Carolina. Teachers and students can use this web site independently or as a class using a number of different teaching strategies, such as, open-ended inquiries, guided inquiries, independent research, and cooperative group learning. The explorations consist of the Carolina Coast's barrier islands, inlets, coastal processes, and coastal issues. The site includes an educator's guide and photojournal. Educational levels: High school, Intermediate elementary, Middle school, Primary elementary

    Environmental Issues: Land Use Change

    No full text
This interdisciplinary technology-embedded middle school science unit focuses on how human activities influence environmental changes related to land use. Students use geospatial information technology (GIT) tools including Google Earth and remotely sensed images to investigate modern day land use issues and land use change over time. It was designed using the Understanding by Design framework and is aligned to national science and geography standards. The unit has modified materials from the NASA-sponsored Mission Geography curricular module, Human footprints on Earth as seen by NASA scientists to take advantage of available, user-friendly geospatial technologies. The materials have been pilot-tested and field-tested in 8th grade classrooms at Broughal Middle School, a technology-rich urban school. Educational levels: Middle school, High school

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
