    A Tri-Stimuli-Responsive Shape-Memory Material Using Host-Guest Interactions as Molecular Switches

    A thermo-, photo-and chemoresponsive shape-memory material is successfully prepared by introducing alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha CD) and azobenzene (Azo) into a poly(acrylate acid)/alginate (PAA/Alg) network. The tri-stimuli-responsive formation/dissociation of alpha CD-Azo acts as molecular switches freezing or increasing the molecular mobility. The resulting film herein can be processed into temporary shapes as needed and recovers its initial shape upon the application of light irradiation, heating, or chemical agent independently. Furthermore, the agar diffusion test suggests that the alpha-CD-Alg/Azo-PAA has good biocompatibility for L929 fibroblast-like cells

    Purification and Characterization of TRI 05 I13S M6I

    abstract: 2,2’ bipyridine (Bpy) can form metal complexes with divalent metals in the form of [M(Bpy-ala)¬3]+2 where M is any divalent metal. These [M(Bpy-ala)¬3]+2 complexes can have very interesting photochemical and redox potentials that can be useful in more complex systems. The use of (2,2′-bipyridin-5yl)alanine (Bpy-ala) as a Noncanonical Amino Acid (NCAA) has allowed Bpy to be incorporated into an amino acid sequence which can now function in a protein scaffold. Previous studies have utilized that power of Bpy-ala to design a protein that can assemble a homotrimeric protein complex in the presence of a divalent metal. However, the issue with this design was that when the homotrimer was formed and the divalent was removed, the protein complex would not dissemble indicating that it was not metal dependent. Point mutations were made to disrupt the protein-protein interactions to favor disassembly in the absence of a divalent metal. Successfully, a mutation was made that allowed the designed protein to be metal dependent for self-assembly. Nevertheless, an issue with this design is that it poorly incorporated ruthenium(II) into the tris Bpy complex forming [Ru(Bpy-ala)¬3]+2, which was one of the main goals of the original design. This thesis sets out to form TRI 05 I13S M6I which should uphold the same metal-dependence as its predecessor and should combine ruthenium (II) into the protein complex forming [Ru(Bpy-ala)¬3]+2. The thesis shows the success of formation and expression of TRI 05 I13S M6I in Escherichia coli cells. This thesis also reports several purification steps and procedures to not only purify TRI 05 I13S M6I but also removing both the His-tag sequence and Fe(II) from the protein. The thesis also shows that TRI 05 I13S M6I does not behave like its predecessor in that it is not metal dependent for self-assembly. While this may be true, this paper also reports the incorporation of ruthenium (II) in the protein structure. Though this may be the first time that ruthenium (II) has been recorded to be in the TRI 05 protein complex with a significant signal, it is still nowhere near the optimal fluorescence that small molecule Bpy can achieve by itself. The thesis reports potential conditions and a plan of attack that should drive this project forward into achieving an optimal signal of the [Ru(Bpy-ala)¬3]+2 complex in a TRI 05 protein scaffold

    Turbulent flows driven by the libration of an ellipsoidal container

    We present a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations modelling a geophysically relevant mechanical forcing: libration. Longitudinal libration corresponds to the periodic oscillation of a body's rotation and is, along with precessional and tidal forcings, a possible source of turbulence in the fluid interior of satellites and planets. In this study, we investigate the fluid motions inside a librating tri-axial ellipsoidal container filled with an incompressible fluid. The turbulent flow is driven by the elliptic instability which is a triadic resonance between two inertial modes and the base flow with elliptical streamlines. This is called the libration driven elliptical instability (LDEI). We characterize the transition to turbulence as triadic resonances develop while also investigating the properties of the turbulent flow that displays both intermittent or sustained regimes. The existence of such intense flows may play an important in understanding the thermal and magnetic evolution of bodies subject to mechanical forcing, which is not considered in standard models of convectively-driven magnetic field generation

This fall semester's bi-weekly Seminar and Discussion Series focuses on the Poudre River and its watershed, its ecological needs, and how it is used to supply water for agriculture and urban needs. Presenters will highlight their topics and engage participants in dialogue. The series will culminate in a "world café" - campus and community open dialogue about the Poudre.Eric Reckentine: Eric Reckentine is responsible for Greeley's raw water management and resource planning; the City's water rights portfolio; federal permitting projects; and is currently managing the fire mitigation efforts for the High Park and Hewlett Gulch fires on behalf of the City of Greeley. Prior to working for Greeley, Eric was a Resource and General Manager for an international mining company responsible for the operational management of several business units, development of acquisition and reclamation strategies, and resource permitting. Originally from New York, Eric came to Colorado in 1994 as a geologist to continue work for a geotechnical and environmental engineering firm and worked on environmental assessment, remediation, and regulatory compliance projects throughout North America. He obtained a B.S. in Geology from the State University of New York and obtained an MBA from Colorado State University, has USGBC accreditation, and is an Army veteran.Susan Smolnik: Smolnik graduated from CSU with a master's degree in civil engineering. For over 15 years, she has worked for the City of Fort Collins as a water resources engineer, currently helping manage raw water supplies. Prior to working in Fort Collins, she lived in Thailand, Somalia and Sri Lanka, where she worked on water supply and irrigation projects. She has been married for nearly thirty years to her Australian husband and has frequently traveled to Australia, during which she developed a strong interest in Australian water issues, with a particular focus in the Murray Darling Basin.Richard Raines: Richard Raines is the Water Resource Manager for the Tri‐Districts.     Efficient Long Term CFD Simulation of the Tri-Floater Using ComFLOW

    One of the emerging technologies in sustainable energy is Floating Offshore Wind. GustoMSC designs a structure for Floating Offshore Wind, the Tri-Floater. One of the problems that need to be investigated before building the unit is wave impact loading. Wave impact occurs when a large wave hits the structure, placing large forces on the structure.In this research project, a model is developed to find the wave impact loads in 3-hour sea states in which the significant wave height and period can be set. The model will work using CFD solver ComFLOW and time-domain solver aNySIM. In the first part of the thesis, a CFD model and an aNySIM model are created and verified with model test data using decay test analysis. Decent results were found for the period and damping of the motion by both the CFD and aNySIM model. When more time is spent on the CFD model, it could closely match the model test results.In the second part of the thesis, waves are included in the simulation. A grid sensitivity study is done with 2 m, 1m and 0.5 m grid sizes. The difference between these grids is slight regarding wave height dissipation.Irregular waves are used to do longer simulations. Two tests are done, a full 3D CFD simulation and a combination of a 2D CFD simulation with time-domain solver aNySIM. When comparing the computational time, the 2D CFD simulation proved to be the most practical solution, saving much computational time.Finally, a methodology has been designed in which a long term wave impact study can be done.A 2D CFD simulation is performed to simulate the wavefield in the domain. This 2D CFD simulation is used as input for aNySIM, in which the motion of the Tri-Floater is simulated. From this motion, the air gap is calculated, and events are selected that will be simulated in a full 3D CFD simulation. The 3D CFD simulation uses initial and boundary conditions from the 2D wave field. It also uses the motions that are calculated in aNySIM for stability.In this 3D CFD simulation, the wave impact pressures can be obtained.The methodology results are hard to judge for value, as there are still some problems that need to be solved. When these problems are solved and more time is spent on improving the individual parts of the simulation, it would be interesting to compare the results to model test data if this is to be done in the future.Aerospace Engineering | Aerodynamics and Wind Energ

    In the Discours de la Méthode Descartes mentions three or four maxims of his temporary morals. How to understand this indetermination? The author, after sketching two interpretations of this locus (F. Alquié and J.-M. Beyssade), attempts an analysis of the first maxim, which shows its internal bifurcation. It's actually composed of two promises. After the initial promise to external authorities, which is sometimes seen as the entire first maxim there appears an often unseen or underestimated second one, according to which it's not appropriate to make promises concerning matters, that are subject to changeable judgements. Between the promise of loyalty to external authorities and the freedom of rational researches arises a tension difficult to surmount. The author is pledging for the priority of the promise made to himself, which is the only one to provide an adequate basis for the wanted freedom of scientific research, and is from this point of view the fundamental maxim of Descartes's morals. The so called fourth maxim only reformulates and develops it in a »safe« distance from the opposition of the strategically declarative beginning of the first.Descartes v Razpravi o metodi spregovori o maksimah svoje začasne morale, ki so »tri ali štiri«.     Measured noise performance of a data clock circuit derived from the local M-sequence in direct-sequence spread spectrum systems

    An improved method for deriving the timing information required for data recovery in the receiver of direct-sequence spread spectrum systems was implemented in hardware. This method uses a priori knowledge of the spreading sequence and its relation to the transmitted data to determine the precise beginning and end of data bits in the received signal. Testing of the hardware built for this research is concerned primarily with the performance of the circuit designed to provide the timing required to implement an integrate and dump circuit as a means of data recovery. A conclusion of this research effort is that a method exists for deriving the timing information required for data recovery from the locally generated m-sequence in the receiver. This method appears to be superior to alternative methods since the reference timing is derived from the locally generated m-sequence and is therefore isolated from the effects of additive noise in the channel.     Tri-Training for authorship attribution with limited training data: a comprehensive study

    Authorship attribution (AA) aims to identify the authors of a set of documents. Traditional studies in this area often assume that there are a large set of labeled documents available for training. However, in the real life, it is often difficult or expensive to collect a large set of labeled data. For example, in the online review domain, most reviewers (authors) only write a few reviews, which are not enough to serve as the training data for accurate classification. In this paper, we present a novel three-view Tri-Training method to iteratively identify authors of unlabeled data to augment the training set. The key idea is to first represent each document in three distinct views, and then perform Tri-Training to exploit the large amount of unlabeled documents. Starting from 10 training documents per author, we systematically evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed Tri-Training method for AA. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art semi-supervised method CNG-FSVM and other baselines. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.     Tri-vector deformations in d = 11 supergravity

    © 2019, The Author(s). We construct a d = 11 supergravity analogue of the open-closed string map in the context of SL(5) Exceptional Field Theory (ExFT). The deformation parameter tri-vector Ω generalizes the non-commutativity bi-vector parameter Θ of the open string. When applied to solutions in d = 11, this map provides an economical way of performing TsT deformations, and may be used to recover d = 10 Yang-Baxter deformations after dimensional reduction. We present a generalization of the Classical Yang-Baxter Equation (CYBE) for rank 3 objects, which emerges from d = 11 supergravity and the SL(5) ExFT. This equation is shown to reduce to the d = 10 CYBE upon dimensional reduction

    Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric characterisation of tri- and tetrasaccharides in honey

    peer reviewedA GC-MS method has been used to characterize tri- and tetrasaccharides in honey after their derivatization into trimethylsilyloxime derivatives. Based on retention data and mass spectra, a total of 25 trisaccharides were characterized; 12 being unequivocally identified using standards and two of them detected for the first time in honey. Erlose and panose were the major trisaccharides in the 12 honeys under analysis, their concentrations ranging 30-1214 mg 100 g-1 of honey and 17-863 mg 100 g-1 of honey, respectively. The GC-MS method also allowed the analysis of tetrasaccharides. Besides nystose, another nine tetrasaccharides were characterized; six of them were sucrose derivatives. Tetrasaccharides were present in concentrations lower than 230 mg 100 g-1 of honey
