    17 August (Mw 7.4) and 12 November 1999 (Mw 7.2) earthquakes have caused major concern about future earthquake occurrences in Istanbul and in the Marmara Region. Stress transfer studies and renewal model type probabilistic investigations indicate about 2% annual probability for a M(w) = 7+ earthquake in the Marmara Sea. As part of the preparations for the expected earthquake in Istanbul, an early warning system has been established in 2002. A simple and robust algorithm, based on the exceedance of specified threshold time domain amplitude and the cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) levels, is implemented for this system. Rational threshold levels related to new bracketed CAV window approach (BCAV-W) are determined, based on dataset of strong ground motion records with fault distances of less than 100 km, as 0.2 m/s, 0.4 m/s and 0.7 m/s related to three alarm levels which will be incorporated in the Istanbul earthquake early warning system.     Investigation of local site responses at the Bodrum Peninsula (Southwest of Turkey) using the mainshock and aftershocks of the 20 July 2017 Mw6.6 Bodrum-Kos earthquake

    Bodrum Peninsula located in the province of Mugla is situated in southwest Turkey. The peninsulais one of themost populatedtouristic centersof the southwest coast of Turkey, near the Aegean Sea.However, this region is surrounded by numerous active seismic entities. All of those systems have capability of producing large magnitude earthquakes and pose a great threat to settlements in and around of this region. Considering the high seismic risk and population of the peninsula, a strong ground motion monitoring system was deployed in June 2015. So far the network recorded many earthquakes in different magnitude and distances. In this study, a dataset with 51 events with momentmagnitudes from 4.0-6.6 occurred within 100 km epicentral distances were selected for site effect calculation. This datasetincludes the mainshock and its significant aftershocks recordsof the Mw6.6 Bodrum-Kos earthquake(20 July 2017, 22:31 UTC). Predominant frequencies and amplification values of shallow soil layers under the stations were estimated through Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio and Standard Spectral Ratios. The results indicate that predominant frequencies change between 2.1 - 2.7 Hz for soft soils, where it is 4.8 Hz for the reference site B5, and relative amplifications are in the range of 1.0 to 6.6. Then, sediments thicknesses beneath the stations were empirically calculated by using predominant frequencies. In addition, the damage distribution of the Bodrum-Kos earthquake was discussed with its relation to the estimated resonance frequencies and relative amplifications. Observations regarding to the Mw6.6 earthquake have revealed that unreinforced masonry structures, in particular, old stone houses were damaged while there were generally no apparent structural damage at reinforced buildings

    We derive some analytic closed-form solutions for a class of Riccati equations y'(x) - lambda(0)(x) y(x) +/- y(2)(x) = +/- s(0)(x) where lambda(0)( x), s(0)( x) are C-infinity- functions. We show that if delta(n) = lambda(n)s(n-1) - lambda(n-1)s(n) = 0, where lambda(n) = lambda(')(n-1) + s(n-1) + lambda(0)lambda(n-1) and s(n) = s(n-1)(')+ s(0)lambda(k-1) , n = 1, 2, ... , then the Riccati equation has a solution given by y( x) = -/+ s(n-1)(x)/ lambda(n-1)(x).     In the following interview, which took place on 26 November 2022 in Norwich, Hakan Gültekin talks to playwright Steve Waters about his theatrical universe and the current state of British Theatre. In the interview, the place of hope and truth on earth suffering from climate crisis is discussed through Waters’ double bill play, the Contingency Plan alongside mentions of other major contemporary plays and playwrights. The impetus behind this argument is to place contemporary political playwriting in its historical context. Steve Waters’ understanding of theatre as the last public space in the contemporary arts is also discussed. Steve Waters is a playwright working for the stage, radio and screen. Waters is also the author of Secret Life of Plays (Nick Hern Books, 2010) and A Life in 16 Films: How Cinema Made a Playwright (Methuen/Bloomsbury, 2021). His more recent works include Limehouse (Nick Hern Books, 2017), Temple (Nick Hern Books, 2015), Ignorance/Jahiliyyah (Nick Hern Books, 2012). Hakan Gültekin is an assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Artvin Coruh University in Turkey.     An assessment of whether global satellite technologies have contributed to global security: the use of vehicle tracking systems by the Turkish National Police in the fight against international organized crime as a case study

    IOC is also considered as one of the major threats to global security, "impeding the social, economic, political and cultural development of societies worldwide". IOC has manifested "itself in different activities, among others, drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings; trafficking in firearms; smuggling of migrants; money laundering; etc." and criminals have expanded these activities thanks to globalization. In the same vein, Naim sees illegal trafficking of drugs, arms, intellectual property, people, and money as the Five Wars of Globalization. Therefore, the fight against IOC is of high importance in terms of global security. The use of the new technologies in combating IOC has caused tangible changes in the operations of law enforcement agencies. In an effort to demonstrate this change, this study intends to answer the question of “What is the impact of the use of new technologies and especially the use of GPS based vehicle tracking systems by law enforcement agencies in the fight against international organized crime”? The study proposed to answer this question by conducting interviews with 63 police officers working in the Ankara, Istanbul and Van districts of the Turkish National Police in Turkey. The study emphasized the importance of the use of new policing technologies in LEAs’ fight against crime and found that LEAs have been benefiting from the use of CCTV systems, modernized patrol cars, computer forensics, lawful interception and observation systems in both detection and seizure of suspects or criminals. The study also found that GPS based vehicle tracking systems (VTS) have also contributed to global security by contributing LEAs’ fight against IOC. Findings of the study showed that the TNP officers benefited from the use of VTS devices in their national and international operations in the fight against IOC. Furthermore the study also analyzed whether there were any human rights violations arising from law enforcement officer's use of VTSs in their operations in the US and Europe. According to the court decisions provided in the study it was found that there was no human rights violations arising from law enforcement officer’s use of VTSs in their operations in the US and Europe.Ph.
