The supervision of doctoral dissertations as a reflection of library and documentation science in Spain: actors and topics (Population of doctoral dissertations analyzed in the study)
An XLSX Excel file which provides data used by Gregorio González-Alcaide & Aurora González-Teruel in the article “The supervision of doctoral dissertations as a reflection of library and documentation science in Spain: actors and topics (La dirección de tesis doctorales como reflejo de la biblioteconomía y documentación académica española: actores y temas)”. The worksheet “dissertations” present the following data: Author: Thesis author; Title: Doctoral dissertation title; Year: date of presentation. English abstract: Doctoral dissertations enable the transfer to research skills and capacities to future generations and the consolidation of research lines in a given area of knowledge. The field of library and documentation science in public universities in Spain is characterized by the supervision of doctoral theses by the academics in the area. We identified active professors during the 2019–2020 academic year, their date of appointment as civil servants within the public university system, the dissertations that they supervised, and their participation in papers published in scientific journals. The analysis included 644 theses. About a quarter (23%) of university faculty have never supervised a doctoral thesis, and most faculty members and tenured professors (60%) show a lower than average rate of adviserships/year since their academic appointment. There is a high concentration of PhD advisers in just a few institutions and academics (8% of university professors have supervised 42% of the dissertations), with important gender imbalances: women supervised an average of 1.8 dissertations, compared to 2.6 for men. Information units and services, study metrics and scientific publications, and information sources are the topics of 47% of the dissertations. Many of the professors with 10 or more adviserships (n/N = 12/18) lack a subject area specialization, and their role in PhD supervision was not related to their participation in research activities oriented toward publishing in scientific journals. Our results suggest that considering supervision of doctoral theses as an important academic merit could contribute to a further concentration of power and social capital among a small group of advisers. This phenomenon could reduce the plurality of topics addressed and favor suboptimal adviserships. The imbalances described emerge as another threat, exacerbating the epistemological crisis in the discipline and in the university studies of this area of knowledge. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Vesicles of Phyllomedusa sauvagii (Anura: Hylidae) Nest
Phyllomedusa sauvagii lays its eggs surrounded by peculiar vesicles in nests made with tree leaves and, until now, the function of these vesicles was thought to be for maintaining moisture. The histomorphological and histochemical analysis of the oviduct of individuals in ovulatory period, and the study of the vesicles in the oviduct, ovisac and in the nest, showed unexpected results. Vesicles originate from glycoconjugates, proteins and lipids secreted in the PCP and PC and organized in the oviductal lumen and, according to their content, it is possible to recognize at last four types. Furthermore, both in the ovisac and in the nest, vesicles show peculiar relationships with oocites/eggs/embryos through specific communication channels, showing the existence of more complex interactions than previously thought.Fil: Pucci Alcaide, Ana.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
